LOCH GARTEN JUNE 2023

Link to May 2023 thread

Asha is the proud parent of 3 eggs, the father of which being dubious but probably URM - now called Brodie - as we hardly saw NN2 (for whom we wish all the best elsewhere) be accepted by Asha. Brodie had a lot of trouble fending off intruders which has made him a bit flaky in the fish catching and delivery department. Poor old Asha didn't eat for over 2 days last week. The main intruder was KL5, who seems to have stopped hanging around so much now, which is good as we approach hatch date and the need for fish will ramp up.

A scylla-super-snap of the happy parents-to-be

 Also, courtesy of scylla, here are the laying dates;

25 April - egg 1

28 April - egg 2

01 May - egg 3

15:14 wow. KL5 just lands on the nest while asha feeding chicks!!!

    Lockhart Horsburgh
I suspect she wants to finish feeding them before seeign him off.

    Canuck
KL5 is just staying there. no brodie around.

    Patrick Mc Phail
He's not fazed by Brodie either by the looks!

    Patrick Mc Phail
KL5! What a star! Looking like for all the world as if he owns this nest! Lol.

    Canuck
15:18 KL5 still on the nest

    Lockhart Horsburgh
Asha clearly isn't pleased but is focused on the kids (15:20).

    Patrick Mc Phail
    Agreed Thumbsup

    SusanJ
    I hope KL5 won't harm the chicks.

    still ongoing...
  • KL5 on nest since 15.14 it seems. Still stood standing.

  • KL5 is still there while Asha is feeding the chicks, complaining the entire time she’s feeding. KL5 is one smooth dude, standing and observing, suave and cool. Amazing.

    Imagicat || Tiger's links || 2022 LG Obs

  • “I am on this stinking nest all day, laying eggs and then hatching them, building and cleaning up around here, and all I want is to be able to feed my family, and this is what I get! An ex-boyfriend visiting without fish, while my good-for-nothin husband is doing whatever somewhere else! And he’s actually f*&@ing standing on my furniture! I’m sick of this crap…”

Oops, KL5 just took off, having satisfied his curiosity. Or maybe he’ll try bringing a fish…

    Imagicat || Tiger's links || 2022 LG Obs

  • Wow just tuned in to find KL5 is back, or was back for a good amount of time, too.
Canuck reports him at 16.46 16.36 (correction). She eventually tried to flap him off and he returned to try to mate, after which he stood regarding her like, “What’s the matter, your guy isn’t around, and I’m sooooo available and handsome.”

16:36 KL5 lands on nest again

    Steven MacFarlane
    He’s back

    Keko
16:36 - KL5 is on the zoom cam and here !!!!!!

    Canuck
where is brodie?? i hope he is ok and just out fishing

    Bart
    Damn he’s impertinent!

    Keko
It's quite windy, so difficult fishing

    Steven MacFarlane
This is really bizarre behaviour. She’s still feeding so obviously doesn’t feel that threatened. He just seems totally chilled.

    Bart
    Very interesting

    Keko
He always was laid back !

    Lockhart Horsburgh
He seems to like being yelled at . . .

    Steven
What a cracking looking bird he is too

    Bart
You have to be as a male osprey lockhart ;-)

    Canuck
16:45 asha using big stick as barrier?? lol

    Keko
I hope he doesn't bring her a fish

    Steven MacFarlane
Thought she was going to hit with that stick

    Canuck
why doesn't she flap him off?

    Steven
    He’s getting more confident…

    Canuck
16:46 he gets closer to chicks

    Keko
She has to protect her chicks

    Marina
    Trying to mate?

    Canuck
16:46 she takes a nip at him

    Bart
    Trying to bond at least

    Steven
Come on Brodie, can only hope he’s fishing.

    Lockhart Horsburgh
Makes him lift at 16:47 but he lands again.

    Bart
    Now she's getting annoyed

    Canuck
16:47 he tries to mate again. wow!!!

    Lockhart Horsburgh
    And lands on her.

    Canuck
    16:48 finally he's away

    Steven
For the 3rd time today lol

    Steven MacFarlane
    Oh the drama

    Lockhart Horsburgh
He got a proper reaction there.

    Keko
hope the chicks don't get hurt

    Lockhart Horsburgh
Can see one looking up at Asha.

    Keko
Poor Asha, very stressful for her.
  • Thank you CC.  Continuing from your last post:

15.14.47     KL5 tried to land on Asha while she was feeding the chicks.  She wanted to finish feeding them before sorting him out.  He stood on the rim, watching, much as he used to before last year's chicks fledged.

15.34          KL5 tries to balance on Asha's licheny stick which kept moving under him.  Volume increases, but she continues eating in between yelling.  She does't flap at him at all.

15.35          Asha tells him to leave, but doesn't mantle – and he does!  I wonder what she was telling him – Go and fish.  He did leave quite rapidly.  I wonder whether Brodie was around

15.56          She is really down to the tough skin now.  Osplets are still interested but she doesn't stop to feed them.    She yanks at the skin, stretching it until a piece comes off.

16.04           She is still trying to get something off the piece.  PTZ is giving us some excellent close ups of her as she twists and turns her head and pulls hard on the skin.

16.29           She is still pulling at it!

16.34            Asha is intruder calling, but doesn't mantle.

16.35            PTZ goes in search and finds him on the top branch of the arch/fallen tree.

16.37            KL5 flies to the nest.  Asha yells and yells but continues to feed the osplets and herself.

16.40             Asha continues to feed the osplets from this apparently bottomless left over, yelling occasionally at KL5.  He meanwhile just stands watching the scene.

16.37      He flies to the nest.  Asha yells and yells but continues to feed the osplets and herself.

16.40       Asha continues to feed the osplets from this apparently bottomless left over, yelling occasionally at KL5.  He meanwhile just stands watching the scene.

16.45       Still yelling at him, Asha move sticks.  One antler like stick and approaches KL5.  He movesout of the way.  He stands on the licheny stick, which is wobbly and she picks up the other end and swings it round.  He gets off

16.46-7    He makes two attempts to mate and she finally sees him off

    16.48        He flies off.

17.00       Did I hear sky dancing, briefly.  Asha started to call.  KL5 must be back

17.01       KL5 has returned to the nest.  Asha is food soliciting now.

17.04      Asha doesn't mantle nor flap. KL5 leaves of his own accord!

Just a reminder how confident KL5 is.  He landed on the nest at the end of the season last year, for one final look around.   Almost as though he is implanting it.

Clearly he is very much at home.

  • I'm off now.. Interesting times, but I do hope Brodie is all right.
One point from my holiday on the NW of Scotland, it is very dry at the moment. Reservoir levels are relatively low which will have an affect on streams and rivers. I went to Meikeleour on the way back, and the River Tay seemed low to me (I did see an osprey though!). After Brodie had upped his game recently, perhaps the wind is making it difficult to fish, or perhaps KL5 is just too strong for him, and is becoming more dominant?

  • Thank you SheilaFE, Your timestamps and details are amazing! Really helps me to visualize what's happening.
  • Oh dear, another worrying time. Trouble from KL5 intruding and Brodie distracted no doubt. Two hungry chicks by the sound of it and Asha yelling. No new fish today.
