LOCH GARTEN JUNE 2023

Link to May 2023 thread

Asha is the proud parent of 3 eggs, the father of which being dubious but probably URM - now called Brodie - as we hardly saw NN2 (for whom we wish all the best elsewhere) be accepted by Asha. Brodie had a lot of trouble fending off intruders which has made him a bit flaky in the fish catching and delivery department. Poor old Asha didn't eat for over 2 days last week. The main intruder was KL5, who seems to have stopped hanging around so much now, which is good as we approach hatch date and the need for fish will ramp up.

A scylla-super-snap of the happy parents-to-be

 Also, courtesy of scylla, here are the laying dates;

25 April - egg 1

28 April - egg 2

01 May - egg 3

  • I want to thank everyone for their very kind words of welcome. I am new to bird cams this year so perhaps have gone a bit overboard with things. lol.

The Loch Garten site is the first osprey site that I found, and second bird cam that I had watched after an eagle site that started it all for me in March. I started watching when Asha had returned but was waiting for a mate to do so. Her plaintive cries at the beginning as she stood sentinel over the nest wove their way into my heart. I fell hard and fast. The drama of watching her figure out which male would win as suitor was better than any tv show. Other osprey nests have since followed.

All those whom I have met through the various chats and now on this forum have been patient with answering my many questions (I had never seen an osprey before) and I am in awe of all that has been done to promote and protect the osprey in Scotland and the UK. Your dedication, knowledge, tracking of data, forums and websites are just phenomenal.

I must make special mention of this forum. What an archival treasure this is with photos, clips, observations and more! I had been trying to grab some screen prints so that I could remember things but now I can rely on this forum. The quality of the visuals and sound is superb.

Thank you again. If ever I get too over-the-top with anything please feel free to let me know. You won't be the first to do so!

That big fish at 13:42 was actually the leftover from yesterday.

Thank you, Canuck - I've edited my post above.

That's exactly what my introduction was, winter 2010/11, I think, when someone (if only I could remember) introduced me to the Decorah Eagles cam... then I arrived here and was smitten and handcuffed to the wonderful, rollercoaster world of Ospreys.

I'm sure you won't be overdoing it, Canuck - you and SHEILA will save me much time scrolling thru footage looking for events, plus an injection of new enthusiasm won't do us any harm either !!!

  • Absolutely Scylla.  We are getting short on commentators on here, now many have migrated to the more instantaneous FB.  I like your keen observations Canuck!  Please keep it up!!

After a quick feed herself, Asha fed the two bobbleheads.

I’m sure Scylla will catch whatever was there somewhere in between her cams. (We call her MC for the Master Control now after Mike dubbed her that title.)

I meant to correct you CC.  Mike did indeed name Scylla MC, but it was for Mission Control.  Mike imagined her in front of a full bank of computers working hard, a bit like the space Mission Control set up.  Sadly, for the life of me I can't find the picture that someone created to show the scene.  It could have been Mary GK, but I'm not sure.  Does anyone had it that they could post?  It's worth another airing!

  • Scylla's Mission Control - thread created by Mike in April 2014 - we all loved this! Some other names on the thread who have sadly passed away since as well

    (c) Mike Simmonds, RIP

  • Indeed you are right, Sheila! It is MISSION CONTROL! And I remember the image but can’t remember who did it! EDIT TO ADD: thank you For finding the thread and attribution, Korky! Mike was certainly a lively and witty participant…Heart

  • Catching up after another work day. Yeeehhhh we have another bobblehead, delighted to read this, we'll done mamma and daddy. Going v to be fun following this pair. And well done the boy Brodie for another fish. Great updates, thanks to all.

A big welcome to you Canuck, you are very welcome to be aboard. Sit back and enjoy the ride, we are a great bunch of folks, all like minded and mad about our beloved Osprey's.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • Asha and the Big Stick

On this fine day, Asha decided to add to the furnishings.

16:55:58 Asha with a big mossy stick drop out of the sky. The stick lands in the crook of another big stick and is propped up on an angle. She tries to rearrange it.

17:03:44 Her tail gets caught up in said stick and Asha shows us her bloomers. lol

18:18:55 Not to be outdone, her wing says "I can do that too!"

18:19:24 The tail counters the challenge by using its strength to push the stick up higher in the crook.

18:34:10 Then calling upon the strength of Hercules, her tail moves the stick out of the crook and drags it across into the nest cup

18:45:40 With nothing better to do, while sitting in the nest cup, Asha decides to stick it to the stick, picks it up and chew, chew, chew on the bark Goes on for 4 min. Take that, you stick!

19:27:50 When she lands, her tail gets caught up on it. She says "Enough of this!" and picks up the stick only to prop it up just a bit higher than where it was

19:29:00 After 2 min Asha shows the stick she is boss and puts it in its place (sort of).

    To be continued, I'm sure

Edited to add:  all timestamps and observations are from watching the main cam and not the ptz cam.

  • Pure entertainment! Asha certainly tells that stick!
  • It should be no surprise to anyone (except Canuck) that the mystery "crafty person" was indeed...

    MaryGK...

...examples of whose versatility can be seen here.

    .

The afternoon tea reported by Canuck:

I thought I'd never finish with Asha's evening capers - and after I'd uploaded I realised I'd forgotten to do stills of the fish out and in - were they the same one?  the outward bound looked ragged, the inward like a new headless.  And I had to leave it in the middle because I had an irrestibile craving for egg 'n chips, as I'd been bought some McCain's for the air fryer... (Hmm, chips must be deep-fried, that's why I haven't had any for 20+ years.)

EDIT - How can this be yesterday's whopper?

    08 June

    I don't think we've seen Brodie yet.
