LOCH GARTEN JUNE 2023

Link to May 2023 thread

Asha is the proud parent of 3 eggs, the father of which being dubious but probably URM - now called Brodie - as we hardly saw NN2 (for whom we wish all the best elsewhere) be accepted by Asha. Brodie had a lot of trouble fending off intruders which has made him a bit flaky in the fish catching and delivery department. Poor old Asha didn't eat for over 2 days last week. The main intruder was KL5, who seems to have stopped hanging around so much now, which is good as we approach hatch date and the need for fish will ramp up.

A scylla-super-snap of the happy parents-to-be

 Also, courtesy of scylla, here are the laying dates;

25 April - egg 1

28 April - egg 2

01 May - egg 3

  • Asha;s had a really good screeching session but I couldn't see a cause...

I haven't seen a proper feed - did something happen to the fish?

    BBL ... ... ...

    EDIT

This was Asha eating the tail only 10 minutes after it was delivered - so that explains her dissatisfaction Frowning2

  • Intruder hardly seen on nestcam until if flew away, and only a wing-tip seen on PTZ (I told ya they shouldn't leave it zoomed in so close, we probably would have got an ankle at least!).  I magnified this but couldn't tell re leg ring.

I'm packing up for a while, SYAL.

  • A few pics from my visit yesterday

pleased to see Asha take flight a couple of times around 10.15 ish

one to return to the nest with a stick and another for a bit of exercise - she circled a few times then flew right over the visitor centre - fab sight Blush

  • What a start to the day.  Two fish already, although both were small, and an intruder.

Thank you so much Richard66 for posting your pics from y'day.  It is always interesting to see the location of the nest.  I'm glad you enjoyed your visit.  Is this the first time?

    04.48 #1 fish at sunrise

    Feeding

07.42  #2 fish  both weren't huge.  A floating fin tail, LOL

08.15  Asha was already calling for another fish

09.14  Ashs calls and Brodie landed with intruder chips.  Asha just calls for another fish.

09.17  Brodie lifts off and flies into the distance beyond the nest.  Asha watches, calmly.

It's been quiet since then (I think!)

Pete Dee did a fantastic job with his site, but i must admit I do like the new one. it brings a more modern touch to it, and the colour coding is nice.

I have been unsure how widely the information about this site has been spread or indeed whether it was supposed to be spread, but I have been in touch with Jeff Kear who took on Pete Dee's super database.

He asked that I "mention that it continues Pete Dee's work, he was the inspiration behind it"

The site is called UK Osprey Information.  Jeff started a private FB page of the same name with the idea that folk with any data/info could post it, and he and his helpers would maintain the data site using this information.  You can apply to join, like any other closed/private site.  "The more the merrier, The idea is that people can post stuff there that we can add to the website once it is verified"

It might be that Canuck might like to offer their services.  I think I have seen a comment on Chat to that effect.

I will give Jeff a link to this post, and he can read any subsequent comments

Edit:  I note Scylla's comment that the first link did not work for her.  Hopefully I have corrected it.  Thank you Scylla for pointing it out.  Not sure why it failed

  • Thank you for super pics from your visit to LG, RICHARD !!!

SHEILA - thank you for filling out on the Osprey ring data site, and thank you sincerely to GEMGEM for taking on the task !!!

You've gazumped me re fish, Sheila, hardly surprising - I've got to rush off now so I can't go back to see if you also posted a snap of one of Asha's sticks, this might be a dupe:

^^^ That's a straight screenshot of Asha's approach with stick, this is it tidied up a bit with IrfanView (for CIRRUS's info):

That link wouldn't work for me, am trying this one UKOspreyInformation.com.

One reason I don't get on with it is because it's in the form of a .pdf doc rather than a list on a web page.  That's my problem, because I insist on not opening pdf docs with web browsers Smirk

I notice the use of "bands" for "rings" - is it Roy Dennis's policy to use the American term for UK Ospreys?

  • We missed another snack delivery:

  • Scylla, thank you for the news of FISH #3 at 14.01.  All three have not been substantial, but much better than nothing.  I doubt any left overs will be found today!  It's sad that Asha continues to moan at Brodie when he hangs on beyond delivery

12.54  there was an intruder over the nest, annoying Asha.  She was mantling and calling, but the incident was over within a few minutes.

15.59 She had a furniture moving session which started when she had a comfort break and brought back a stick at 15.57
