LOCH GARTEN JUNE 2023

Link to May 2023 thread

Asha is the proud parent of 3 eggs, the father of which being dubious but probably URM - now called Brodie - as we hardly saw NN2 (for whom we wish all the best elsewhere) be accepted by Asha. Brodie had a lot of trouble fending off intruders which has made him a bit flaky in the fish catching and delivery department. Poor old Asha didn't eat for over 2 days last week. The main intruder was KL5, who seems to have stopped hanging around so much now, which is good as we approach hatch date and the need for fish will ramp up.

A scylla-super-snap of the happy parents-to-be

 Also, courtesy of scylla, here are the laying dates;

25 April - egg 1

28 April - egg 2

01 May - egg 3

  • Asha's been shouting her head off, she could be seeing Brodie with a fish but at the same time she seems to be mantling...

Unfortunately the cam is zoomed in too close to see any surroundings.
  • No wonder she's mantling - he's preening smugly:

  • KL5 has flown from his tree,..

    Then to another tree...

Then tried to descend onto Asha !!!

    Gone for now.
  • Hello one and all. Working at our music festival again yesterday, had an evening event, not home till late. Could not get on here, much worse that the1st of the month! Up and running now thank goodness. Indeed a good dad Brodie is being. Scylla, the chicks 1st fisty cuffs session was funny, little squeaks from them and one was giving it as good as the other. Some fish now would be good, it looks like another nice day at LG.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • WooHoo!!  I pinged off an email to RSPB Sandy HQ last night, and again this morning to RSPB Scotland - my name will be mud!  Thomo also started a new thread, Forum Very Very Slow Since Last Night, so the message has got thru, thank goodness.  Thank you RSPB, we are most grateful.

Asha has been moving the licheny stick which may be new or perhaps was mentioned yesterday/day before.  I noticed on Thursday evening what could have been interpreted as a bunch of flowers at the back of the nest, with a pinky red centre.  I think Canuck did a good piece on it.

Asha and hungry osplet - she keeps touching the osplets beak, oh so gently.

    10.55  pretend feed

then moving the licheny stick again.  Look at the length of osplet's neck!

11   #1 chick waiting for food, #3 egg, or is it #1 egg, and osplet #2 in the front.

11.29  Asha calls, sort of expectantly, but with a tinge of 'intruder'

11.36  She volume goes up - more intruder for now

11.38  PTZ finds KL5 on the bare, arched tree

11.50.41  KL5 flew in, and tries to land on Asha's back.  She is having none of it, and flaps him away (phew, that took a long time to upload!!)

12.17  Asha continues to call.  I'm not sure whether she can see Brodie after all.  Where is our Lad??

  • Two "attacks", it was a wonder the osplets didn't get trampled:

    .

    Brunchtime here, SYAL.

  • 13:57 chicks fighting. really going at it. can really see it on ptz cam
  • 14,43 Asha is still calling, and has taken an angry comfort break. I could hear her calling before she landed back again. Not a happy bunny.

I wrote to LG VC last night, no reply up to now Frowning2

Did we make a difference or did it just finish what it was doing and revert to normal operation?  We'll have to try to remember the 10th of June when it comes to the 1st of July - if life is fair, there won't be any go-slow on that day.

Thank you for the long and detailed report, SHEILA x

Dear Asha is still pretend-feeding her chicks.

I'm off for the duration, SYAL.

  • Asha dug up an old fish she noticed while trying to sort a stick. Fed herself and the chicks.
