LOCH GARTEN - May 2023

Link to March/April 2023

.

After a start/stoppy kinda season, we now have settled couple "URM" (until LG give him a name) and Asha, or Mistle as some would prefer.

Asha is the proud parent of 2 eggs, the father of which being dubious but probably URM, as we hardly saw NN2 (for whom we wish all the best elsewhere) be accepted by Asha.

URM and Asha are similarly marked but distinguishable by certain differences which I may slot in here but I've lost them for the time being.

Asha (R) is looking rather small in this snap because she's crestfallen due to no supper:

Because Asha did so much work on the nest before she had a partner, there hasn't been a lot for URM to do - but he has quite frequently brought in nest material - and his fish provisions have been regular and willingly handed over.  He's a promising Osprey dad so far.

  • Wow! A nightingale! I have heard them in France, and I believe they are at a nature reserve not far from me, but I haven't come across them on the few visits I have had. What a lovely dawn chorus too. Thank you Scylla.
There has been a shower at LG. Asha stood up and shook her feathers before settling down again. She is having a sit-down preen!

  • Absolutely Sheila  - I  remember  too that Axel wasn't exactly 'up to standard'

I'm upset he didn't return but relieved Asha has a different mate

  • 11.47 Brodie landed with a stick, prodding Asha as he landed.  She got up, chatted, and flew off.

Aaaahhh!  It's taken well over eight minutes to get the snip, and to save it.  The system is far more complicated than it was.  This is ridiculous.

11.49.07 Brodie was fidgeting, got up and flew off.

11.49.45  But who returned to settle once more?  I think it was Asha.  Chat suggests it was Brodie.  Help!  The bloomin' stick doesn't help!  Edit:  It was Brodie who returned, and later defended the nest initially.

  • Good morning all. Just tuned in to see Brodie screaming at an intruder while he’s trying to brood. It is an extended intrusion. EDIT: Asha startles him as she flies in. Was kinda funny… she’s taken over incubating and he’s flown off after whoever it is.

  • Morning all, have just followed that CC, I just presumed it was Asha on nest chatting and squeeking from 12.06-12.10 and Brodie flew in from behind, they did get a fright, did a nose dive. So hard to tell them apart, by time you think you have worked it out, they have flown or changed over!! Some more fish brodie please, no excuse today for wind or rain!!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • Thanks for the clarification, it is difficult to ID them! Just now around 12.38 the sitter uttered a few alarm chirps indicating a threat on foot (ie people) and flew off the nest. Returned and did it again. Then I believe I heard a distant voice, briefly. The sitter is back… I think it is Asha.

  • Intruder alert. Asha was intruder calling, and has now left (12.34) the nest in pursuit. An unusual call off cam, was it a brief sky dance??

12.36 One of them touched down, and then left in pursuit, intruder calling.
12.38.28 Asha returned and stood low over the eggs before settling 12.45 Seems settled, but is keeping a keen eye around her. She is gular fluttering (panting!), so it must feel warm.

  • Please CC don't think I was saying the pair were the other way round, I was not correcting you, just presumed, as it was when I first looked in. Thinking

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • 12.50 Brodie returns, and Asha food solicits. He just stands, check the scenery, Asha, his feathers and stands on one leg as he preens, ignoring her calls!

  • 12,55 Brodie flew off. Asha becomes silent.
