Llyn Clywedog March - May 2023

Llyn Clywedog is a reservoir situated near the B4518 road north of Llanidloes, Powys, Mid Wales. The reservoir is owned and operated by Severn Trent Water, with oversight and regulation by Natural Resources Wales. A sailing club and a very active trout fishery operate on the reservoir. The fishery stock the lake with tens of thousands of trout every year.

In 2005 Natural Resources Wales erected an osprey platform; this was eventually occupied in 2014, and has been used every season since then.

In 2022 the unringed osprey known as Dylan returned to the nest for his seventh season as the resident male. Since 2020 the resident female has been Blue 5F(12) (known as Seren - Welsh for Star). She hatched in Rutland in 2012. Previously she had for several years been unsuccessful in attracting the sole attention of a male to a nest at Pont Croesor. The previous unringed female (Delyth) did not return in 2020, and Seren 5F replaced her.  In 2020 Dylan and 5F Seren fledged 3 male young, in 2021 (a cold and wet season) only one male fledged, and in 2022 one female and 2 males. 5F Seren has regularly been seen in Africa in winter for many years - she was last reported as seen in the Gambia on 1 February 2023.

In 2022 5F Seren returned to the nest on 26 March; Dylan arrived on 5 April, which is later than he arrived in previous years.

There is no visitor centre or facilities. The nest can be observed from a temporary hide in a layby off the minor road. There is a footpath close to the nest which is closed and blocked off during the nesting season.

The nest is looked after by the area NRW ranger John Williams; he has a blog on this link. There is a more comprehensive history of the site in his blog. John goes well beyond the call of duty to support the ospreys and ensure that the cameras are running etc.

There is an active Facebook group for the nest on this link. The group tries to record all fish deliveries which are collated for analysis.

There are 2 streaming cameras provided by Carnyx Wild. The  links for the live stream change every 12 hours, the latest can be seen on the playlist links below.

Camera 1 is a close-up of the nest. - playlist on this link

Camera 2 gives a wider view with two perches - playlist on this link This camera is not being transmitted at the moment due to condensation obscuring the view.

  •  I had gone to lots of trouble to fetch up some snaps of 496 - and then forgot to post them.  So please forgive me posting them now when I'm all behind with current events !!!

  • Aww, those snaps are lovely Scylla, thanks. I like how you’ve shown him as a bob, a toddler a youngster and a teenager in the family album! Joy

Early relief for Seren - @ 04:26 Dylan landed on the high perch but we couldn't see him fly in.  He took over @ 04:44 (my timeline is a minute or so behind the built in clock):

  • She didn't return until 06:10 !!!... bringing a thin stick with some deciduous (I think) leaves on it:

You can't tell me that Dylan caught and ate the head of this fish within 13 minutes Astonished  He must've had it stashed somewhere, surely?

Missing 08:00-10:37, after which much buffering.

11:38+++ Dylan incubating and skywatching, Seren landed 11:50.

She was very watchful too, mainly craning out to our left, then Dylan flew in to high perch.

Seren shouted at him and he flew off :12:10, back @ 12:45 then down onto the nest.

This was a fish, I can't get a good view of it:

Seren ret'd 15:25, a bit later Dylan brought nest material (or maybe he went to the Jurassic coast and brought back a fossil) and took over, we couldn't see where Seren went because the cam was zoomed in:

Seren ret'd 16:07, took over a few minutes later.

3rd fish of the day !!!

Seren back @ 18:21 with a very thin, straight stick.

Still incubating @ 21:50, that's as far as I go for now.

Dylan was here trying to pick something up from the right side of the nest - it seemed it was too delicate an operation for him to complete successfully. Seren made no move.

I've got the LotL cam displaying (not recording) on the same screen and somehow the sound got unmuted, so it's nolisy!

  • Well that’s different Scylla, a blended video. Smiley It’s like watching a foreign film with the dubbed voices! Joy

(I can't use Rich Formatting to do pics/vids.)

04:30 Dylan arrived - he was picking at the right side again, exactly the same as yesterday. He didn't stay but flew off after 2 mins.

04:54 he was back with half a fish for Seren and he took over i.imgur.com/Yr1ydgq.jpg
  • Today is day 37 since 5F Seren laid her first egg. Increased focus on the streaming today - same for Dyfi too.

I witnessed 2 half-fish deliveries for Seren, one in the morning, one in the evening.  The usual network probs mean I can't access video, I'll reboot now, how miserable and depressing this is, and I know it's Microsoft's fault, something they did in the March update.

  • Oh, Scylla my heart  goes out to you, yes, how miserable for you (and us, since we appreciate our MC so much)

I know it's difficult but try  not to get too stressed
