LLYN BRENIG

Many thanks to AG  who wrote this preface to the Llyn Brenig thread for us (below)

Llyn Brenig is a reservoir on the border between Denbighshire and County Conwy in North Wales. It is managed by Welsh Water;  the osprey project is a partnership between them and North Wales Wildlife Trust.

One pair of ospreys raised a single chick here each year from 2018-2020. Neither of this pair returned in 2021, when the nest was taken over by 2 Scottish birds, LJ2 (male) and LM6 (female), both 2018 chicks. The nest was vandalised the night after LM6 had laid her first egg; while the two could not continue to breed they did stay close to the site until normal migration time.

A new nest has been erected in 2022 with additional security and a streaming camera is in place. A new hide has also been built.

  • Around 08.36 LJ2 arrives with a freshly caught fish and what a whopper it is too, it took him to drag it onto the nest! Smile

The chicks were quickly up and calling to be fed. I think it’ll last them all week! Ha ha

Two contented wee chicks. Looks like it’s going to be another lovely day. Blush

  • LM6 just loves feeding her chicks now! Several feeds from the large fish throughout the morning. Chick #1 has become quite a wanderer, starting his journey around 10.50. Chick #2 follows later to get some shade.

The chicks get a feed at the top of the nest. Chick #2 has an ungainly flip backwards!

It gets back up quickly. “Did anybody notice?!” Haha Joy

  • LM6 has been industrious tidying away sticks.

Around 13.53, LJ2 arrives at the nest to take away the tail end that was left of the fish that LM6 and the chicks have been enjoying all day.

Around 15.45, LM6 starts fish calling as she sees LJ2 and he soon arrives at the nest with a nice new stick, he knows how much LM6 likes sorting them!

  • Thank you Glider, what a good day it has been for this nest. Let us hope it continues but as we have seen at other nests this year things don’t always go smoothly. But I’m becoming optimistic.
  • You’re welcome Jane. Blush Yes, this nest has totally turned around from the beginning and is looking good. I am cautiously optimistic. (I was so shocked and devastated at what happened at LOTL yesterday) However, with there just being 2 chicks for these first time parents, they’ll have a much greater chance of success.
  • Thanks for the update and images Glider. I've just looked in on the nest for the first time today and couldn't believe how much the chicks have grown. As you say this nest appears to have turned around. Such good news.
  • Around 18.37 a small whole fish is delivered by LJ2.

Both chicks take a good feed with #2 settling down first. Just under half of the fish is left on the nest.

You’re welcome Janni Blush and yes, the chicks are developing so well. Chick #1 was 2 weeks old yesterday and chick #2, 2 weeks old tomorrow.

  • A wee bit of supper arrived at around 20.13

I couldn’t really follow the feed as LM6 was blocking our view, both chicks were there though.

Looks like all of the fish was eaten as LM6 moved behind the chicks and they soon settled down under her.

  • Early morning fish arrives via the front door at 05.36. Looks a bit more windy today.

Chick #1 has a yoga stretch before getting into feeding position.

#1 gets the first few mouthfuls and then it’s #2’s turn
