LLYN BRENIG

Many thanks to AG  who wrote this preface to the Llyn Brenig thread for us (below)

Llyn Brenig is a reservoir on the border between Denbighshire and County Conwy in North Wales. It is managed by Welsh Water;  the osprey project is a partnership between them and North Wales Wildlife Trust.

One pair of ospreys raised a single chick here each year from 2018-2020. Neither of this pair returned in 2021, when the nest was taken over by 2 Scottish birds, LJ2 (male) and LM6 (female), both 2018 chicks. The nest was vandalised the night after LM6 had laid her first egg; while the two could not continue to breed they did stay close to the site until normal migration time.

A new nest has been erected in 2022 with additional security and a streaming camera is in place. A new hide has also been built.

  • Thanks for the updates Glider, they seem to be a good routine now.  There has been an early morning fish delivery which managed to escape LJ2s talons and leap into the nest cup but all seems well and the chicks were fed.  And even better the webcam is no longer glitchy, at the moment.

  • You’re welcome Jane and Good Morning. All looks lovely and calm ….. apart from a jumping fish! Yes, things are going well here now, long may it continue. Blush
  • 10.00 Thank you LJ2, what a cracker of a fish!

Those two chicks will get many feeds off this whopper.

  • 2nd feed managed just before LJ2 took the fish away at around 11.09

Fish returned just after noon for a 3rd feed

12.35 LJ2 back to defend the nest from an unseen intruder.

    13.18 - 4th feed for the chicks

By the end of the 5th feed at 13.52, see how far #1 chick has moved to get to the fish!

  • Chick #1 had fallen asleep after the last feed next to the fish, away from mum.

14.44, the chick woke up, realised where it was, turned around and shuffled back to snuggle under mum.

  • More feeds around 15.00, 15.45 and16.25 saw the fish finished off! I’ve deliberated as to which type of fish it was - either trout or salmon? I don’t know what is stocked in the water next to the nest or if LJ2 goes further afield.
  • I’ve scrolled back and can’t see any more fish deliveries. LJ2 has visited the nest a few times and LM6 has asked him for fish but that’s maybe it for today. He tends to stop fishing a lot earlier now.
  • Fish delivery about 7.30 am today and both chicks fed equally. The older chick, on the left, is entering the dinosaur stage and is very well camouflaged in the nest.

  • Good morning everyone. Another calm looking day. Some early morning squabbles from the little ones, usually started by #2 and finished by #1 whilst waiting for breakfast.

Around 07.35, LJ2 arrives with a small fish.

The chicks are hungry and call loudly to be fed. LM6 feeds them half of the fish and their crops start to fill up.

Feed is over and LM6 settles back down on them around 07.50. After she has sat down, a loud splash is heard from out with camera shot.

  • Good morning Janni. Yes it was a good feed. It’s definitely easier to tell the chicks apart now with #1 changing colour!
I see that LM6 got back up about half an hour later to continue the feed and the fish was gone within 10 minutes - big difference from yesterday’s whopper! Grinning
