LLYN BRENIG

Many thanks to AG  who wrote this preface to the Llyn Brenig thread for us (below)

Llyn Brenig is a reservoir on the border between Denbighshire and County Conwy in North Wales. It is managed by Welsh Water;  the osprey project is a partnership between them and North Wales Wildlife Trust.

One pair of ospreys raised a single chick here each year from 2018-2020. Neither of this pair returned in 2021, when the nest was taken over by 2 Scottish birds, LJ2 (male) and LM6 (female), both 2018 chicks. The nest was vandalised the night after LM6 had laid her first egg; while the two could not continue to breed they did stay close to the site until normal migration time.

A new nest has been erected in 2022 with additional security and a streaming camera is in place. A new hide has also been built.

  • 16.03 There’s a small boat in the distance behind the nest.

  • LM6 approached her chicks to feed them this time. LJ2 stayed with her for a bit, I don’t know if that gave her more confidence in feeding, being a first time mum. Both chicks sat up and were calling, LM6 was very gentle and persistent around the chicks’ beaks. She managed to feed #2 easier as #1 was very wobbly and had difficulty holding position. It fell over onto its back again like yesterday and lay for a while, still calling, before it corrected itself. However, when getting up it was facing the wrong way and had to work out how to turn around. LM6 did try to feed it but it often jolted its head away or would fall to the side as she got to the beak. She kept trying and it did manage to get one or two pieces. The feed lasted around 20 minutes and LM6 finished the fish off.
(I’m assuming which chicks are #1 and #2 because I saw #1 fall in the same way yesterday)
  • LM6 attempting to feed the chicks

#1 chick falls backwards as it loses balance trying to get fed

#1 still lies there and #2 gets some fish

#1 finally gets up, turns itself around and gets a little drop of fish before it’s finished off by mum.

  • Fish delivered just before 22.00, LM6 feeding chicks now. The weather doesn’t look too great.
  • All the family together Both adults have fish LM6 feeding chicks

  • Thanks Patily and Good Morning. First fish delivered this morning around 05.30

Second fish delivery just before 10.30

  • Good morning!  Just checking in after a long absence, as I saw activity in the thread.

It seems you have "adopted" LB, GLIDER - how super, it needs someone paying special attention and I had to stop monitoring it because of cam probs.  Thank you very much for great reporting and snapping Hugging

Good afternoon Scylla, haha, I just added some photos as I was worried about the lack of feeding and wanted to hopefully see some progress. Blush
The camera is very stuttery though. Worried

  • Around 11.30am, LM6 went for a comfort break and LJ2 came to sit with the chicks.

I haven’t watched this nest regularly in the past so don’t know if it’s a common occurrence for boats to be in the area?

LM6 then returned with a long stick. Both parents have been bringing sticks and nesting material to the nest today.

The camera froze at this point so I just took the snap!
