LLYN BRENIG

Many thanks to AG  who wrote this preface to the Llyn Brenig thread for us (below)

Llyn Brenig is a reservoir on the border between Denbighshire and County Conwy in North Wales. It is managed by Welsh Water;  the osprey project is a partnership between them and North Wales Wildlife Trust.

One pair of ospreys raised a single chick here each year from 2018-2020. Neither of this pair returned in 2021, when the nest was taken over by 2 Scottish birds, LJ2 (male) and LM6 (female), both 2018 chicks. The nest was vandalised the night after LM6 had laid her first egg; while the two could not continue to breed they did stay close to the site until normal migration time.

A new nest has been erected in 2022 with additional security and a streaming camera is in place. A new hide has also been built.

MC. I have spoken to LB and they have no problem at their end. I have used a feedback facility on YT to inform them of the issue.

Shame-facedly, I cannot find a "feedback facility" - I've done this snap to show them what we are seeing but can't send it to them Persevere

  • I hope that the security of this nest has been stepped up after last years debacle.

I was just thinking that while trawling thru the 25th and thinking that there was one egg last seaon when the nest was sawn down.  I think they said they were arranging for round-the-clock watchers, but whether they got enough volunteers I don't know.

In the meantime, LJ2 has been standing guard:

He had a peek at the egg but didn't take over on this occasion:

Evening (I presume, cos it darker) the sitter mantled and flew off, then both parents returned to the nest and LJ2 chased off an invisible intruder:

Before he returned I came to the end of my download - I don't set this to automatically resume because it's too unreliable.  This is the current scene:

  • There is also a big boom put out on the water to stop boats getting too close to the nest

  • Just managed to catch a glimpse of "still one egg" but still can't rollback.

This channel is designated as MADE FOR KIDS, so certain features will be disabled.  As protested before, YT's made-for-kids policy needs to be clariified, it's a trap!

Need to tell them to turn on the DVR feature:

    1. Go to YouTube Studio.
    2. Click Create   Go live.
    3. Start a live stream now from the Stream tab or schedule a live stream from the Manage tab.
    4. From the stream dashboard, click Enable DVR.

  • KA5 (19), son of Blue 24 and HR7 intruded at Glaslyn (BGGW and PC Nests)  this afternoon. Welcome back to Wales Roli.

  • The boom was in place last year Richard - I would argue it needs to be more than 150m from the nest, but that is where it is.The biggest difference this year is that Welsh Water have invested in a photography hide on land, 150m from the nest. It accommodates 2 photographers at a time, at £10 per hour for each of them. This then gives them a real incentive to protect the nest - no-one will pay to photograph a damaged nest site!
  • I just phoned Llyn Brenig (inspired by MIKE!).

The person who answered said that the DVR (rollback) is deliberately disabled at the moment, but he didn't know about Made for Kids.  I told him that we valued the rollback and he's going to speak to "them".

Rather strange because they told Mike that it was working fine at their end Upside down

  • AG Thank you so much for news of KS5/Roli  As explained last year when he first came back He has a vert special meaning for me Lovely to know he is safe and well

  • Patily, I try to remember that we are observers of the natural world, and succeed most of the time. But the potential for Blue 24's son and KS8 (18) (Daughter of Delyth who was the first female to breed at Clywedog) to keep both those genetic lines running is something I would just love. KS8 was seen in 2020 and last year ( at her home nest and at Glaslyn) - hope she turns up again soon.
