OSPREY CHAT 2022 + ***CAM LINKS***

I'm starting this thread because the OP can be an easily-findable repository for information - eg, how to find current live streams - and it can be updated by me on behalf of myself or anyone else who instructs me to add or change something.

The rest of this thread can continue as the "normal" Osprey Chat thread we have every season.  OK?  I hope Purple heart

  • Oh wow, Scylla!!  That is amazing, and how brilliant of the BBC to zoom up there.  The commentator was Andrew Cotter who covers a variety of sports from athletics, to tennis and all in between, and is clearly knowledgeable about raptors!  During Lockdown where there was no sport he took to making videos of his two Labradors, Olive and Mabel, which were really hilarious. This is his YouTube site.   He must be interested in osprey too....

I wondered where the nest might be.  It's clearly not on the crane.

The actual tweet is worth reading, here.  It suggests he did ask the camera man to zoom in!!!

"Eugene is known for its rain and clouds – but not for fish dropping out of the sky. Osprey legend is that in 2014, while the birds were nesting at the historic Hayward field, they dropped their lunch – which happened to be trout – on unsuspecting runners. It was at that point in time that the University had the nest moved across the street to its current location at Oregon Law. The Ospreys soon adapted, and within two weeks, they moved to their new nest.

The nest currently rests on a 52-foot-galvanized steel lamp post retrofitted to be a platform. In 2018, the School of Law installed a video camera atop the osprey nest perch to offer a bird’s eye view in real time of the nesting osprey. This unique view was made possible through gifts by friends and alumni in honor of retired Dean Margaret “Margie” Paris, the first woman to hold the deanship at Oregon Law. Since being installed, more than 170,000 visitors have viewed the live stream."

Just in case you don't yet know Blush  amber is the normal colour of young ospreys' eyes, they get paler as they mature.  Wish you'd been here for Monty RIP, the master of Dyfi, who kept his gorgeous amber eyes all his life Purple heart  He was the best spouse, the best dad, the best provider... just the best Purple heart

Best I can do, without spending lotsa time:

EDIT - Can't resist keeping on looking and tarting something up ;)

  • Oh, Scylla, he was indeed a special osprey.

  • Thank you scilla for helping me through my newbie time, much appreciated. I do a lot of research (in my hart I'm still a scientist (math and computer science, not biology) and I'm finding more and more.
Totally curious about migration at the moment (and as in the chat was mentioned) the effects of climate change on migration patterns.
You might have missed it, but I asked a question in chat whether a page will be kept here for following the tagged Ospreys in the UK, or elsewhere)

I was aware of the amber colour, I only mentioned it because in late afternoon light they become darker of course and so will the breast colours.
Still Love how you support me in my still negligible knowledge :-)

Oh and yes.. Monty in absolutely beautiful

  • Oh my, our most handsome boy, Monty. Still very much missed Cry He will always have that special place in our hearts Purple heart

Thank you, Scylla, for two beautiful portraits of such a very special Osprey Hugging

  • I'll only be helping you with little bits 'n pieces, BART, I don't have a "world view" like some - Valerie Webber, Tiger Mozone, Alan Petrie, and several of our regular forum posters whose names I won't mention in case I get them wrong.

Well if there isn't, you can make one!  None of "our" chicks have been tagged for several years, but last season KORKY made an "anything goes" thread, where we posted snaps and vids of all sorts of wildlife cams, mainly birds.

You've reminded me of my first season, when chicks Tore and Bynack were tagged and we tried to follow them on Google Earth - ths is the only vid I can find now - not very edifying, but sentimental:

  • Can;t possibly  not post this one of MONTY JUST LOOKING GOOD

  • OH SCYLLA I was posting about dearest Tore and Bynack only the other day I was absolutely broken hearted when they were lost and now CIRRUS another dear bird who has a special place inour hearts
  • An accidental find on Quora - most amazing capture!

I trust it's not a fake, but I do take everything on Quora with a tablespoon of salt.  Photographer "Andy Woo" is credited.
