oh dear. Yes watching good and bad happening on these nests is all part of the experience of nature but not easy at all

Thanks, JD, sad and not looking good. But it seems that the demise of one chick in a nest gives any remaining chicks a better chance of surviving because the parents have slightly less work to do to feed and protect them--tough to remember...but true. In the time I have watched a few nests I have seen a couple situations where a male chick (who was the only remaining chick in a nest that had some tragedy happen to it) returned and successfully became the breeding male on a nest of his own. You probably know that Blue 33 at Rutland is one example where he became the sole surviving chick due to chaos created by intruders at his natal nest (if I remember correctly!). He migrated and returned successfully, and managed to eject his older brother (older by only one year!) from the Manton Bay nest after the previous male did not return in 2014, and the following year and ever since, he has bred successfully with the resident female there (now known as Maya--formerly Mrs 5R) including a couple of years when they had 4 chicks. Of course folks hated him that first year, but he has proved a good partner (and an entertaining one to watch, too!) Luckily his older brother managed to step in as the male at another nest near Rutland and had many chicks himself before sadly not returning (think the older brother, Blue 28, did not return in 2021, but I could be out by a year).
