Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 5 September 2021

HAPPY NEW WEEK and HAPPY NEW MOON!

The moon turns new on Monday, 6 September, or Tuesday, 7 September, depending on your location.

I hope everyone has a happy week full of joy and love!

(Happy Labor Day to Annette and bjane!)

  • Morning all:

Diane:  I must join the chorus of happy sighs that the state finally came through for you and that you also got a new assignment.  And yes, what a coincidence that your car (faithful friend) hung on until the very end.  :-)   That's amazing, but then again, these things happen!   Do you have a good mechanic who can check out any new-to-you vehicle?  And of course, there's Carfax online, where you can find the registration and accident history of any vehicle (though not always the complete maintenance records)  Good luck shopping for your new wheels.  How are you getting around in the meantime?  And by the way, how's that ancient Auntie of yours?

SunnyKate2: It's posters like you who slow down my mornings with fascinating links that I have to click on and then read, only to end up down archeological/geologic rabbit holes, in this case about Darmoor.  :-))    I gather they're closing that prison in a couple of years..

bjane:  Always good to see you pop in.  Do you mind me asking how your daughter is these days?

CC: When I lived in LA I used to listen to Star Date on NPR - a brief daily heads up about the night sky that originated from the McDonald Observatory at the University of Texas in Austin. We don't get it on the NPR station here in Santa Barbara but I do hear it on the Flagstaff NPR station when I'm visiting family in Prescott Valley (the Lowell Observatory is in Flagstaff).  I'm going to do a SunnyKate and provide the link.  :-)  https://stardate.org/,  When I was a regular listener, the presenter was Sandy Wood who apparently retired in 2019 after 28 years. She had a lovely voice.

Harelady:  Welcome home and have a good night's sleep.

PatO: Safe travels! Hope the weather is kind and the traffic flows smoothly.

AQ:  My down-to-earth-be-grateful-for-what-we've-got neighbor (who grew up in East Germany in the bad old days) allowed that she was experiencing a general down-in-the-dumps mood of late.  Me too, plus some other of my friends.  I think it's the continuing avalanche of distressing news followed by more distressing news.  My OH and I stumbled upon Downton Abbey on Netflix the other night (we've only watched it four times!), but turned it on just to avoid the evening news during dinner.  As the opening scene appeared, I sighed,  "Ah the good old days, when Downton Abbey was new, Obama was in the White House, and we thought the country was finally heading in the right direction...."    :-))

Meanwhile, in California we have this incredibly stupid and expensive election on September 14 aimed at recalling Governor Gavin Newsom (Democrat). It's supported by all the anti-vaxers/anti-mask types (need I say more)   His main opponent is a loony rightwinger with zero qualifications.  The polls are in Newsom's favor, but I'm not taking anything for granted and am off to deliver my ballot to the election office.

    Take care all.

  • Harelady - Glad you're home safe, so you csn now rest, well deserved.

Pat - Hope all goes well on your journey. Have a good trip!

We've had a surprisingly hot day - at least 28 degrees locally, and I believe even hotter in the South. After lunch, we went to visit my OH's cousin as we couldn't wait to meet their new dog, Belle. She barked when we arrived, but soon settled down when we all sat down. She is very gentle and sweet, and already very attached to her new "Dad".
  • Time to celebrate! You know how water can wear away stone. . . daughters can have the same effect on father. Both girls urged their father on Fathers Day phone call to get vaccinated. It worked! (Did any of my urging have any effect? Maybe?) Anyway this morn I discovered that our local tiny chemist is now giving jabs. OH agreed, if I did the online booking. First available appt 10.30 am, he said yes, I booked him. I then booked second in Dec. He insisted on walking down to chemist. I rushed off early to do my food shop (at a bigger supermarket complex) and was back in time to drive him home. Advantages of shopping early – plenty of car parks, few customers. Disadvantages – horrid traffic (drivers late for work, parents delivering kids to school).

Fantastic news.  You must all be so relieved!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Celebrating here, AQ!! That's great news!

Good Morning, Everyone. Sunny again, maybe for the last day of high temps as supposed to disintegrate into stormy weather tonight.

My OHs nephew saw the specialist yesterday about his shoulder: he has shattered it really badly and broken his collar bone. Big operation now scheduled for next Monday, where they will look at the collar bone, and then put in a new metal ball joint as he's shattered it completely. :-(
  • HI, all. Orthopaedic consultation today was cancelled (they phoned yesterday) due to staff sickness. They will phone when an appt is available! OH still has to drive to the hospital Thursday for J’s MRI.

Too many posts for me to get through them all – so just a few quick comments. Looks as if some have travelled and come home and others going off again. We are still not taking any risks!

LINDA – we too are enjoying the September sunshine after that awful August. Sat outside yesterday – OH was working at the front so I had a couple of nice chats with neighbours. Sounds like a long recovery for Nephew once that surgery can be done.

AQ – so pleased with your news of OH’s jabs – well done those girls!

Good weather continues today, but OH quite busy indoors.
  • Morning all:  Assume most in the UK have been enjoying the sunshine.  Meanwhile, we have fog this morning but sunny after 10 a.m.

AQ; That's brilliant.  Bravo to the daughters.

Lindybird:  Ugh, sounds like nephew has a complicated recovery ahead....

Going to lunch (an outside restaurant!) with friend today. It's in Carpinteria down the coast a bit with a pretty patio full of with succulents in pots.  Take care everyone.

  • Greetings from Lichfield! Just back from Choral Evensong in the Cathedral. Good journey, with only a few miles of bumper to bumper. Wonder how the roads further north will be tomorrow?

I've read everything but can't respond individually. Even though I'm away from home I still need to prepare a news sheet to circulate tomorrow evening!

Keep well, everyone, and enjoy possibly the last warm day. I have come away with only sleeveless tops - it could be quite cold over the border!
  • Good Morning. Only a slight shower here, but supposed to have had stormy weather to the south of UK. Still quite warm.

Bonnie went missing on her walk this morning, meaning my OH had to spend half an hour searching for her. He's now gone off on a day of golf, hopefully not too frazzled by his bad start.

Pat, glad it's going well so far - have a good journey today.
