LOCH GARTEN Daily Obs & Captures MAY 2021

On the 15th of March the 360 cam went live and an Osprey landed on the nest.  It didn't take too long for a pair to begin bonding:

Male: BlueAX6 "Axel" - Ringed at a nest in Glen Affric on 1st July 2016, he was the only survivor of 3 eggs.

Female: Unringed "Mistle" - a very beautiful specimen, according to our long view.

(Unofficial names - LG will decide on names if deemed appropriate.)

This inexperienced couple is bonding well - Axel has been a good provider, they're both enthusiastic nestbuilders, the only element that requires more work is the mating technique.

EDIT 01 JUNE - Axel & Mistle deserted the nest in May, apparently spooked by intruders.  As there has been very little activity since then, this thread will continue to the end of the 2021 season, unless dictated otherwise by ospreys.

Cam info kindly provided by Peter @ Carnyx.tv:

There is an identical camera and microphone on this nest as the HD camera at Llyn Clywedog (Osprey). However the nest was struck by lightning. This took out the camera, the camera power supply and the WiFi link back to the centre. We managed to replace the power supply and Wifi but it was too late in the season to climb to the nest.

  • It was funny watching them both when Axel brought the headless fish in. She grabbed it, but once in her talon she was in no hurry to leave with it. Three minutes or more before Axel moved towards her, moving sticks from under her tail. Was he daring to contemplate theft? He didn't dare, and finally she took off with it. Axel left later for one of the treecam perches and more splendid close-ups

Richard Thaxton was the former Warden, who wrote regular blogs and updates, and was full of enthusiasm about the nest.

I'm really, really missing that.  There have been a few updates from LG lately but not a single one of them is cheering the fact they have an osprey pair for the first time in years.  That's heartbreaking when it is such a historic nest.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

For those who have not seen, or want to know more about Henry and EJ here is a video made of the now infamous 2004 season. This is all taken from LG.

I think you gave me a link a few years ago, and I love it, and the entertaining commentary.  Lovely to see Roy Dennis and Richard Thaxton too!   The chicks were Yellow 27(04)f;  Yellow 29(04)? and Yellow 28(04) m who was called Baldrick, courtesy of Imagicat.  I wonder whether any was every heard of again.

Sadly not, except 1 unconfirmed sighting of Baldrick back in Scotland a few years later. Having kissed him on the head, I really do hope it was him!

Some people think Ospreys are a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

  • Awww, so that was the back view of you!
My notes against Baldrick say "Apr 2011 Briefly at nest monitored by LG Group member ID tbc"
But I guess it was never confirmed, or I missed it.

Sorry, not a back view. I was 'full frontal' in the video with RD and RT!

My lingering memory of Richard is the "sound" of him asking us to be patient, when we'd suffered (sometimes) days of no cam with not a word from the Centre Confounded

Following a big Windows crash, I'm off for a while, need to gather strength to sort out the mess.

  • Mating attempt. 8 marks out of 10 for Les who wants us to keep a score?

Here was the post that started the Baldrick puzzle?

  • Tuned into see Mistle nagging and a moment later a faintly mantling Axel takes off.
