Weekly Chat, Sunday 28 November 2010

Ah. Lovely to meet you, Lynette & Dibnlib. [Pics on previous week's thread.]

Gorgeous pics of snow Wendy, Alicat & Osprey. But I bet you are not thinking "lovely"!!! My nearest to snow was some grey slushy roadside stuff in Tasmania 40 years ago.

Tiger I think I have Gary’s puzzle solved. Alas I can only award you 2½ out of 5 on the brain teasers. I was being diabolical this week. Until Friday then . . .

Linda Successful shrunk pics. The walker’s seat - what a wonderful way to remember someone.

Oh no, Auntie, minus temps already.

Alan Love your intermittent "busy pics", the shivery one, the dreaded leaf blower & the migration.

A bit shivery here today, expecting 20 C max again. I’m not complaining. A quiet day for me. Yesterday I helped Dau2 washing, wiping, cleaning, etc as per her list. G-kids did minimum possible. Brats. After lunch Dau & Sil went shopping while I guarded the fort. I think they were out longer than necessary but I don’t begrudge them that. The brats are really rude & unhelpful. GS greeted me with "what are you doing here?" Hello and nice to see you too! They spoke to their mother on Skype - what a lot of complaining & false info. Grumbling that Sil put passwords on computers. Well Miss14 did abuse the privilege. She is proud of doing badly in final exams. Alas these days kids don’t repeat a year at school. It seems it is more important to stay with peer group than to acquire knowledge. I just don’t understand them. Sorry. Rant over. I’ll go and read Linda’s answers again to put me in a better mood with some giggles.

  • Just a little extra to OG note re Birds in Garden.  This morning one brave or innocent! young black-headed gull came down and took a few mouthfuls.  Usually they fly around, perch on rooftops, visit next-door for large bread pieces: but fail to land on our triangle of decking where the feeders are, because it is too closed in by garage and house walls and fence.

Electrical efforts outside with street lamps etc have emboldened me to do some minor wiring alterations indoors (still legal to do your own in Scotland - alas no longer approved in England and Wales).  However major task next week (to install Solar PhotoVoltaic panels on roof and link into house wiring) will be done by professionals.  Firm have confirmed they are still coming from Hartlepool as booked Tuesday, even though they have had to postpone other jobs elsewhere because of bad weather (e.g. Aberdeen and Newcastle).

Keep warm all, and keep feeding the feathered ones outside.  We too will be ordering from RSPB.

  • Morning all - more snow overnight and this morning ... and thunder and lightning! The thaw continued yesterday until early afternoon ... and then it snowed and got colder :-( I gather the rest of the country has now joined our 'snow party'!

Linda - lovely photo of the bird of prey ... what a thrill to see it there!

AQ - another fun Sunday for you I see ... NOT! I love the mental picture I have of you casting the evil eye on the boyfriend :-)

Lynette - I sympathise with the jewellery valuation for probate ... I had to do the same for my aunt after she died. I eventually took them to a local auctioneers which has free valuation days and they were excellent.

OG (and Eagle-eye!) - The jackdaws and skemmies have been out in force this morning ... but the gulls never seem to land, just circle round. Interesting to read about your continuing roadworks!

I was amazed this morning, when I opened the curtains at the front of the house, to see a council lorry and three workmen. It appears they had come to deal with a small tree (hardly bigger than a sapling) which blew (or was pushed) over a couple of weeks ago! It has been lying around on the Green, causing no problems since then .... WHY come and do the work now in all this bad weather??? Would they not be better employed clearing ice and snow? Probably not their job! Sorry ... rant over :-)

Thanks to all for chat etc

Take care and stay safe and warm.

  • Good Morning All, woke up this moning to a lot more snow took these this morming

  • Good Morning All. Plenty of snow yesterday and last night, which measures about 6" this morning and still snowing. Not nearly as bad as other parts of the country though, who are measuring their snow in feet, not inches and have been enduring the conditions much longer.

I will now go and catch up with all your posts. I hope you are all keeping warm and safe.

  • BIRTH  ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!      IT'S A BOY!!       IT'S A BOY!!        IT'S A BOY!!

My grandson was born at 9.16am this morning, after waking up his parents at 12.30am.  He has brown hair, and all his fingers & toes, both Mother and Baby doing well.  His weight was just under 7. lbs, which is heavy considering my d. in law is such a tiny girl herself.

Have just spent half a hour on the phone telling all & sundry - also pats on the back from the neighbours.  My OH is slightly shell shocked to suddenly be called Grandad, and I keep crying when I tell everyone.  This is going to be one much loved child.

  • Linda - CONGRATULATIONS to the proud grandparents .... and parents of course! Glad everything went well :-)

  • Linda, SO many congratulations to baby, mum, dad, you and OH:) Wonderful news:)))))))))

  • LINDY   Many congratulations to you all.

think we will not be going out today (probably the first day since I came home from hosp) OH got a bit of a cold so it will probably be a keep warm and snug type of day.

  • CONGRATULATIONS to you and your family Linda. Glad your little grandson has arrived at last and that both he and his mum are doing fine. What a wonderful start to December for you all :)

  • Re school milk. Until we were around 7, the nuns used to heat our milk in the winter and it would be put in a mug. It would often end up with a skin on the milk, which I hated. We had indoor and outdoor toilets, and hot water, thank goodness !

We have put out extra dishes of bird food this morning, especially for the ground feeders. We had three GS woodpeckers together on one large feeder ! Most popular birds this morning are LT tits, blue tits, chaffinch, greenfinch but the goldfinch seem to have disappeared today.

Margo, Have you seen Billy Whizz this morning ?

Linda, Many congratulations to the GRANDPARENTS and THE PARENTS. So glad he arrived in his own time.

    Will 'speak' again later.
