Weekly Chat, Sunday 28 November 2010

Ah. Lovely to meet you, Lynette & Dibnlib. [Pics on previous week's thread.]

Gorgeous pics of snow Wendy, Alicat & Osprey. But I bet you are not thinking "lovely"!!! My nearest to snow was some grey slushy roadside stuff in Tasmania 40 years ago.

Tiger I think I have Gary’s puzzle solved. Alas I can only award you 2½ out of 5 on the brain teasers. I was being diabolical this week. Until Friday then . . .

Linda Successful shrunk pics. The walker’s seat - what a wonderful way to remember someone.

Oh no, Auntie, minus temps already.

Alan Love your intermittent "busy pics", the shivery one, the dreaded leaf blower & the migration.

A bit shivery here today, expecting 20 C max again. I’m not complaining. A quiet day for me. Yesterday I helped Dau2 washing, wiping, cleaning, etc as per her list. G-kids did minimum possible. Brats. After lunch Dau & Sil went shopping while I guarded the fort. I think they were out longer than necessary but I don’t begrudge them that. The brats are really rude & unhelpful. GS greeted me with "what are you doing here?" Hello and nice to see you too! They spoke to their mother on Skype - what a lot of complaining & false info. Grumbling that Sil put passwords on computers. Well Miss14 did abuse the privilege. She is proud of doing badly in final exams. Alas these days kids don’t repeat a year at school. It seems it is more important to stay with peer group than to acquire knowledge. I just don’t understand them. Sorry. Rant over. I’ll go and read Linda’s answers again to put me in a better mood with some giggles.

  • its snowing here again been doing so for the last hour or so had doctors appoinment earlier still trying to get warm from been out in the snow

  • Just had a quick skim of the above - see that OG is 'trimmed at both ends' and that dibnlib has enjoyed a nice lunch out.  Most of the rest of us are going stir crazy!

Son rang to say that the Midwife has been, & pronounced that unless Sweetpea makes an effort to appear before Friday, D. in Law is now booked into the hospital to be induced on Friday afternoon - but they warned that the babe may not be born until the next day -- so lots of waiting, still.  We are still shaking our heads at all the neighbours enquiries.  December tomorrow!   - where has the time gone?  Doesn't seem long since we were watching the little GEM's learning to fly, does it?

  • Here are the promised pictures of our Very Special Visitor on our holiday.  I watched the birds from our balcony, of course, and there only seemed to be the usual Spanish version of the little sparrow, and a few parakeet like green chatterers, plus the odd pigeon.  Then one afternoon I saw a larger, brown bird in a nearby tree in the grounds.  We waited to see it fly off, and lo and behold it was a Bird of Prey! - all other birds suddenly made themselves scarce.  We got our small binoculars out, but they are not very powerful, so only confirmed that it was large and brown!

Next day, I was sitting on the balcony quietly, when a bird appeared on the rail in front of me!  It was a Sparrowhawk!  No camera with me, only a cup of tea and a book!  Called OH & he came to the door quietly, and we watched it as it totally ignored us, watching for prey: then it flew off.  Next day, I was ready for it, when it landed on next doors balcony - so here he is!

-- such a thrill to see him up so close!  After that, we saw him land on several rails nearby, but never saw him make a kill.  Tried in vain to catch him on the wing, but too fast for me.

  • dibnlib Is Campbell's Highland Tweed House still in Beauly? Used to shop there when holidaying in Scourie.

  • Its now thundering/lightening as well as snowing i don't believe this weather were having

  • Sorry to hear about Sheila FE's Aunt - good job there are people keeping and eye out for her, or she could have been there longer.

Now I'm beginning to worry about poor Billy Whizz - glad you managed the hairdo, margo & hope that Billy is somewhere warm and dry.

    Awful weather everywhere, Alicat!

ps Thanks to Alan for reminder about the New Blog - will look in later.

  • PATRICIAT   think Campbells still exists. We tend to go to Beauly for House of Beauly. Maggie Blythe and a good deli called The Corner on the Square. Haven't been in to Campbells but pretty sure we pass it on the way to park in the square.     Glad to hear that  Tweed isstill doing well in his competitions.

Makes you feel cold just looking at the poor thing!!

  • ‘Evening, all.  Ironing pile dealt with, and left OH finishing washing up.

Brenda – sorry to read that you in the S-E are getting so much snow today.  Stay safe if you have to go out.  We are forecast sub-zero all day tomorrow, and have to go out to the bank late-afternoon!

Dibnlib – pleased you were able to have a day out to Beauly today.  Soup and cheese scone sounds just right.  Ben Wyvis (I assume) is spectacular any time of year.

Joan – me too, re frozen milk and pecking birds – also the school milk warmed on the stove.  Worse part was the toilets were outside at the end of the yard, and every winter the pipes froze so the council delivered the “Elsan” toilet – yukk, dreaded having to use it, no wonder I was always constipated!  Will your thaw stayed thawed, or is it likely to freeze tonight?

Alan – thanks for mentioning Alice’s blog.  And no snow in Zurich?!!!

jsb – I know it’s not “official” but I am sure you are right about Finches making a mini-migration, and I am convinced that I now have Wendy’s Goldfinches, Lindy has mine, so you probably have hers!!

Wendy – so sorry you have “lost” the sunshine temporarily.  You do have Mrs Pheasant well-trained, but I am sure you would think of her (them) even if they didn’t knock at the door!  We also got the RSPB special offer today so will be ordering yet again.  Enjoy your freedom in Elgin tomorrow!

Annette – Bakewell slices are good – had one each today because we missed coffee shop!  Rothes might only travel north to Morocco or Spain on her first migration next year.  Being a female, we can’t predict where she will eventually arrive, it’s the males which tend to return to their hatching area.

Lindy – so November baby becomes December baby, unless he/she suddenly pops out tonight!  Well done with the Sparrowhawk – sorry he didn’t catch anything, but, returning next day, sounds like he knows and likes that spot, so must sometimes be successful there.

Liz – when I saw that snow picture on BBC, I couldn’t make up my mind whether it stood still and let all that snow fall on it, or whether it had been rolling in it!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Sheila: Missed that paragraph about your aunt; hope she's okay.

Lindybird: I went into hospital for induction but started labor before they had a chance to get to me. Must've been a thrill seeing the Sparrowhawk.

OG: Never heard of Eslan toilet (and glad I didn't).  Ours was inside and cold enough; we had one outside that I never used coz of spiders, etc.  Aha, yes, all the chicks were female (I was thinking that after I posted earlier to Alan).  So, she may not travel far and not show up at all and then maybe as an interloper. Hmm. Didn't know that about males....
