Hi everyone: And a good Sunday and rest of the week to you all. Don't forget to check the last posts of last week's chat for clever moving graphics from Tiger and Alicat (and maybe some others), pix of OG's friends' garden, late updates on one thing or t'other - and pix of my trip north! :-)
Weather these last few days are more like a not-very-nice English summer day. Unbroken gray skies, low clouds, and a constant soft drizzle. All very odd. On telly they were saying we had a couple of days of summer and now it's back to May Gray and June Gloom. Although tomorrow through Tuesday they're forecasting rain and possibly thunderstorms! A good day for doing inside stuff - like researching a new laptop. Spent ages reading about replacing the LED bulb in my laptop and it does sound a tad daunting: The Dell forum folks gave a link to a video, but you apparently - according to several folks who know - have to be "very, very careful." I didn't mind that but was especially put off by the news that the LED bulb (long and slender) was made of a very brittle glass that likely had lead in it, not to mention mercury. Also, do not have the tiny soldering iron or the special tape. Sounds like one of Alan's "Destroy It Yourself" projects! :-)
OG: Poor son with bad toe - definitely not a good time to develop problems - but ugh! - what a nightmare to find his new apartment so trashy. Just awful. So good of your OH to go up and check out the appliances, etc. Don't you hate it when "our" kids run up against this kind of stuff!
patriciat: I suspect there's more than one Mission San Miguel - wonder which one Lonnie Donegan (and U.S. artists) were thinking of. There is an old pueblo next to the mission I visited, which oddly has a Scottish name - The Rios Caledonia Adobe. According to the history page: In 1846 William Reed, Miguel Garcia, and Petronilo Rios bought the San Miguel rancho from Pio Pico, Governor of the Mexican Nation. Rios and his wife, Catarina Avila, had twelve children and moved into the adobe in 1851. In 1862 German-born Warren C. Rickard purchased the property from the state of California on a possession claim. In 1868 George Butchard named the adobe the Caledonia, a Scottish word meaning Scotland. He operated a stagecoach stop, tavern, and inn. According to local legend, Jesse James and the Dalton Brothers visited the inn.
Enjoyed reading all the posts; back tomorrow. Take care dear friends!

Tiger: I very rarely drink alcohol, but when I do, my drink of choice is a "Kahlua Mudslide". So good.
Recipe:
1/2 ounce Kahlua1/2 ounce Bailey's Irish Cream1/2 ounce Vodka1 ounce cream
Many restaurants drizzle a bit of chocolate syrup down the inside of the glass. Very decadent.

Stop it Diane you will make me into an alcoholic! :) :) :)
It does seem very nice and I will endeavour to try it.
For some reason it reminds me of "The Waldorf Salad" in Fawlty Towers or full episode.

No time to read just now (I am at work after all...), although the above looks interesting. Thought you might like this. It's really fascinating, you can zoom in and out, hover over a ship to find its name, where it has come from and whete it is going. If the green diamond is still to the west of Carlisle, it's what I am watching from my office window.

Hope it works.

Afternoon all,
Thanks for all the earlier chat and pics. No time to comment but all very interesting as usual.
Weather is cold and showery today after a sunny start. Glad I managed to do some gardening yesterday because it is a bit chilly today. Off to take Hamish for his afternoon walk.
Took this pic of some nice goldfinches on the feeders earlier:
Afternoon all ... I've had terrible problems getting on here until now ... I see from Tiger's comment that I might not be the only one!!
AQ - lovely photos from your trip
Great pic of your goldfinches Alan - I haven't seen mine for a few weeks :-((
Diane - I love the sound of the Kahlua Mudslide ... I have a bottle of Kahlua in the cupboard ... I should really leave it there!!! Very sad about the wild bobcat being killed ... I found the article very interesting.
OG brilliant photographs .... OH was very interested ... and envious!
margobird - I hope you get the problem solved with MWSnap .... it can be so frustrating.
patriciat - thanks for the info about the Strand Church in Belfast!
Thanks for al the chat
Take care

Hi everyone. Just trying to catch up with the posts.
Diane - Kahlua Mudslide sounds lovely but aargh the sugar! Especially with chocolate syrup too. LOL I can feel the pounds going on just thinking about it! If I had all the ingredients in the house (actually would only need the Kahlua and the cream) I might be tempted to have more than one! Sigh...better not :)
Alan - lovely pic of the goldfinches.

--- thought it was me, having computer problems again, when I couldn't get on here today....
Had to go out first thing this morning, so came on this afternoon to all the lovely pictures of steam engines and AQ's adventures etc. Not able to reply so had to leave here and go off and do the ironing instead :-(
Thanks to Alan for lovely pics of the goldfinches - we've not been able to tempt ours back yet but are hoping they won't be too upset about my OH cutting down such a lot of the big old apple tree the feeder hangs in.
It's showered on and off all day today, and in between that, it's rained!
Hello All,
I was able to sign in this morning and when I clicked on post------------ the ****** post vanished !!!!!!!!!!
So, as I was saying...........
Tiger, Yes I should have written temporary files. After just one visit to GE, you will find 100 Mb temporary files on the hard disk, whereas in IE, you can set it so that temporary internet files are automatically deleted on exit., which, I am sure you will know already.
Annette, I have Vista on my laptop, which was the version which was rectified after all the earlier problems and have had no problems at all ( as always, do make sure you download all the updates), but if I was buying a new computer, I would insist on \windows 7. It has been on the market for over a year now. My OH has Windows 7 and is threatening to change mine.
OG, I loved seeing your 'steam' photographs. We have our local Kent and E. Sussex steam railway nearby and all our visitors insist on taking a ride. The trains are only allowed a top speed of 25mph so it is a slow journey for the 10 mile trip, but covers some lovely scenery along 'our' Rother Valley to Bodiam Castle.
George, I was pleased to hear that your son is fine and I am sure that you are all enjoying yourselves. I hope you don't have to do all the coooking.
Diane Sad to read about the bobcat but loved to see the photographs.
This is as far as I replied to this morning and I will catch up after I have checked our dinner. We haven't seen any rain today yet, so we went to the coast and it was lovely and sunny Rain due this evening.
Hi folks
Enjoying all the great pics. Alan, I wish I could capture images of our goldfinches but don't think the zoom on my camera would be sufficient. We don't seem to have any birds other than goldfinches at present, 10 or 12 at a time on the various feeders - and do they eat!
It's been a cold, blustery day here, with showers from time to time. I'm going to chance not turning on the sprinkler for the new grass this evening. Afraid it'll droown.
Love the sound of the Kahlua Mudslide. Fortunately I don't have any of the ingredients in the house - I'm sure it would be addictive!
