The first osprey streaming webcam was the DPOF one in 2003.
I started watching in June 2004 and life was forever different.
One of the most fascinating things which ever happened was the "mystery of the missing egg" in 2006.
Betty the female osprey laid eggs as follows:
1. April 14
2. April 17
3. April 20
4. April 23
Now on 1st May 2006 at 6.35am EST a very odd thing happened. Suddenly for no apparent reason Betty lifted one of the eggs and dropped it out of the nest. See this at egg destroyed
At about 1 minute 10 seconds of the video the egg is seen to fall outside the nest on the right.
Now this started off a great mystery as to which egg she destroyed and why she did so. I am not sure we ever got to answer for why she did so but by a variety techniques I think we eventually worked out which egg was dumped.
The 2006 season at DPOF was the most gripping ever in my experience in no small part to one of the eggs being dumped.
I hope to show over some time the evidence which allowed us to identify the missing egg and why it has such amazing consequences.

Thanks Tiger, it's good to see what has happened in the (recent) past. Unfortunately "Hey it's my turn" is not letting me watch, although I could get the earlier one of the egg being taken. I'll try again another day.

It is a bit slow but it does come up. I have managed to get it a few times now.
TerryM. This should work much more reliably. View at My Turn
Thanks to Tiger, for a mystery story worthy of Agatha Christie! very intriguing. (& lovely artwork from Chloe)
Thanks Linda. It was great fun collecting the evidence :)

Thanks Tiger. I think you posted the link somewhere else recently and I managed to see it then, but forgot to say.
Well done to you both Tiger and Chloe! I could never have imagined such a scenario with so much effort and clue following. I can foresee a detective agency being set up :)). Was there ever a theory as to why the female ejected the egg? I love the debate on gender too. It never occurred to me anything other than a tiger!!

I am glad you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. The gender debate is a fond memory as it had come up on other boards too.
Chloe's are did come into its own and was much more poular than the mathematical solution.
We never did discover why the egg was dumped. Betty must have sensed that it was no good. However if it had not been dumped the season would have been laess traumatic. Poor flag as fourth chick in the nest would almost certainly have died and I dare say would might have learned to love Stripe as the oppressed young one in the nest. Of course in that case Stripe would probably have the name Flag anyway.
LOLOL thank you Sheila love the idea of a detective agency. More like defective on my part! :))
We do make a rather good team though. Glad you enjoyed it :)
