Weekly Chat, Sunday October 10, 2010

In the absence of Annette it falls to me to start the new weekly thread.  Continuing from  Weeky Chat, Sunday 3rd October 2010

I hope you all have a great week and no doubt we should welcome back Annette before the end of it. Hopefully the other holidaymakers will reappear too. It is so hard to keep track of but if memory serves me right both OG and Alicat are also on holiday.  A birthday coming up on Saturday (16th)  too :)

  • Shouldn’t have mentioned sunshine – it started to drizzle, but not for long – now we have patchy light cloud.  Been busy between, doing more holiday washing and other domestic stuff.  After this, must start ironing before it becomes a pile!

Joan - amazing that you also found a mention of Bernardo O’Higgins in the same week!  (see my previous post).

Heather – sounds a great lunch at Culloden House.  Thinking of you with all the family gathered in Ed for the 1 Scots Homecoming Parade.

AQ – your meal sounds good too – especially the starter.  Hope you are enjoying your history bus tour this weekend – and your time away from Jasper!!

Lynette – so sad that your Mother is fading – good that you saw her when passing through on your recent Scotland trip, as has been said, with the increasing dementia, she is not the Mum you knew – but the waiting is very stressful, and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Tiger – I don’t like to disagree with others, but your walking Tiger reminds me of zoo Tigers pacing up and down – he is walking but never arriving – sorry!  I loved the Aussie Osp “chicks discussing pecking order” – good clear views there with such a shallow nest.

Annette – welcome back!  You read missed posts much quicker than I – but we did have to unpack first to get OH “turned round” (actually, facing same way, but you know what I mean!) for Grantown this weekend.  Thanks for account of your trip and amazing picsenvy you that clear light for photography.

Diane – I remember mention of Whooping Crane captive breeding programme last year and have signed petition.  Good to see you had time for the big catch-up – stay around!

Brenda – hope your Daughter’s move goes well – more about our Son later.

Alan – thanks for Phoebe reminder – hadn’t checked her site for a few weeks.

Lindy – film sounds very interesting.  When do you set off on hol to be back in time for Sweet Pea?

George – sorry about your son’s accident – and holiday cancellation.  At least your cleaning is done and will last a while!

Sorry I missed Margo before she set off – hope she gets good weather to enjoy the animals.  Will be interesting to hear what the new ones are!

Alicat – HAPPY BIRTHDAY!  Present in very large box sounds worth waiting for.  Enjoy the rest of the day.  Only Cat pic I took on hol was just snapping next door’s occupying Daughter’s new back wall - she thinks it was built just for her to sun herself:

Gary – pleased dentist visit went well.  Perhaps their oats should be porridge for a couple of days!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

Alan/Tiger, you may have answered this, but how do you get the moving graphic? Thanks in advance

It is what is called a .gif    rather than .jpeg

It is essentially a set of pictures shown in sequence to give the appearance of movement.

You presumably have seen my moving tiger over a Delphi. When I tried to upload it here at RSPB or on Facebook it stubbornly refuses to walk. Thus I just copied it into my sig but it lives on Delphi rather than RSPB.

I do hope it does not lead to bandwidth issues. I do not think it will as the bandwidth will be from Delphi and I got a paid account there.

They are not hard to do provided someone makes you the .gif

Or maybe more to your taste Gary

Both a bit big in my view. A case for shrinking!

  • wow, thanks Tiger:) great stuff. I've saved the horse to my computer, is there now a magic trick to get it onto my posts? I've tried to copy it into my profile but it didn't seem to work.

OG, LOl on the porridge! They would enjoy that. Good luck with the ironing and thanks for the nice cat picture.

You got to upload to webspace....like Photobucket say. Then copy it from there back to your signature.

  • Here was my amaryllis deciding to produce a bud on 3rd September 2009

  • George Sorry about your son's accident - you're really having a bad time just now.  Hope he's soon OK and that things turn better for you.

Annette Great to hear about your trip.  It sounds wonderful.  And your pictures are super.  Fascinated to discover that the Mission San Miguel really exists - I remember a song from my youth (sung by Lonnie Donegan, if anyone else remembers him), which started 'Close by the Mission San Miguel stands a great house wherein dwell Don Carlos and la Dona Maria Elena Cantrell'.

OG Hope your OH can get things sorted for your son - family difficulties are such a worry.

  • Ironing cleared – but more in washing machine!  Glad we don’t go away for a fortnight!  Veg now in oven for my dinner (promised OH I would eat properly!) – having baked salmon, decided to make the one appliance do for everything and so roast carrot, courgette and potatoes – all from the garden.

Thanks for many good wishes for Son.  He had two things going on (as well as work!) during the past two weeks: move of flat and toe op.  Toe appeared good but during move last weekend it started to look wrong.  Various medical opinions from two health centres (due to Sunday availability), return visits for dressings and then eventually the nail came off.  Not a crisis, but some discomfort and time taken, which he could ill afford on top of move probs.  I thought the nail should have been removed about two years ago and save a lot of trouble for him and cost for NHS, but then I am only his mother!

Move had been delayed from 1st to 8th, then another day because previous tenant was not fully removed.  When Son and helpful friend went in, they discovered it had not been professionally cleaned as promised, he couldn’t shower because tiles were off wall, general unwanted items were left behind and, worst, when he got home from work that night, he found dirty bed linen (supposedly provided) on the bed!  Various appliances were not working, but some have been fixed this week.  Friend helped take some stuff to tip during moving day, another friend helped Sunday and landlord has given permission to dispose of some other rubbish items.  OH (he arrived lunchtime) phoned from the tip this afternoon where they had been with the dirty mattress and other things.  OH will test all electrics – installation and appliances – and advise, and help him finish cleaning up and move some storage to a friend’s garage.  Son gave priority to kitchen so has been able to shop, stock his cupboards and start cooking proper meals.  He will be using his own bed, chair etc and cooking utensils.  Don’t know whether they will get anywhere with shower, but he can shower at the gymn, or at two friends’ houses – and he has a bidet (!!!) so can keep his toe clean in that until it finishes healing!

Oven tells me time to put salmon in, so will do that and prepare my raspberries (not home grown, but very good!)

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Tiger/Chloe, thanks for the technical help and making the horse image smaller. Will def' try and add that. Can't try now as I'm off for the 2 hour drive to the airport to pick up the visitors.

OG, your poor son. That flat sounds in such a mess. I'm so sorry for him. What with that, and the poorly toe:(( Hope he get's there in the end. You're dinner sounds lovely. I'll be round in a jiff! lol

Also, you may have noticed me moaning about how long it takes pages to load. I've tried the blog on a different browser and it's much quicker. Don't quite know why i didn't think of it before.

Hope everyone has a nice evening:)

  • Hi everyone.

The weather here has been very mild for the time of year.  You expect it to be colder but end up realising you've put too many layers on.  No doubt that I've said that I'll probably wake up to frozen bird baths tommorrow.

ALICAT:  A belated but very Happy Birthday to you.

Annette:  Thanks for posting those excellent photos.

Gary:  Glad the visit to the horse dentist went well.  I must confess I actually thought horses would get any teeth treatment from a vet.  This forum can be brilliantly educational. :-)

OG:  Great cat on the wall picture.  Thanks.

Tiger:  Thanks for the info on the moving signatures.

    Happy Saturday everyone.  :-)
