Daily Update Finale (Empty LG Nest), Saturday, 28 August, 2010

I've started one final Daily Update thread to end the week. Tonight (for U.K. Sunday) Annette or someone will start a new Weekly Chat and that can be the official end to the Daily Update.

This last Daily Update thread may be needed because jsb has just posted the following on the old thread:

Osprey on nest at 6.28am for about three seconds, unexpeected, so too late to capture by one second, Heard wing air-rush sound, came in from left, looked at camera, looked up, flew off, to right. Possibly a male, but not sure, too quick for me, having tea in bed.

EDIT: Was busy researching story on cupcakes, when it happened, after waking from nightmare about an orchestra!

Hope that's okay with everyone, especially since we have an osprey about.

  • Thanks to Tiger for the link to Big Hook & Dad - how interesting they are!    might help with the withdrawal symptoms...

Daisy Ray -  Look forward to seeing you on Weekly Chat Page - everyone is friendly, just join in when you feel like it.

Here is the nest for one last time from me, as it is this afternoon :

--& here is a memory from earlier in the year---  I labelled it  "3 in a bed, eating!" as they hardly bothered to get up to feed.  Note the pretty and different kinds of moss EJ used this year.

  • Good afternoon Lindybird and thanks for the pics, empty nest and those three little balls of fluff.  Who would have believed they were ever that small.  Was a very pretty nest even in the snow!  So strange now to see it empty and untidy and I sit here wondering how far have all gone, are they catching fish yet, having a safe journey so far.   seems strange not rushing around first thing to I can log on and catch up with all the chat from the night shft and early morning shift.  Visit the cam and see what is going on and listen to the noise those three youngsters made as they grew older.  Happy days spent with EJ, Odin and family.  Happy times spent with all who post on this site as always.  Lots of humour this year, particularly Heron 77.  Many beautiful captures and videos which I will be looking at through the next few months until we all return to the daily chat once more.  Last post here for me and thanks to you all for some wonderful company.

  • Daisy Ray look forward to seeing you on the weekly chat.

    Margobird

  • Thanks to Tiger and ChloeB for the EJ clock, and to all for the chat and photos and videos over the season, which I have greatly enjoyed!  I followed the blog without joining last year, but in the years before that, from Henry onwards, I was only on dial-up so only saw the official diary, and Nethy and Deshar on the site but no Google Earth as last year. Anyway, it has been lovely to see this year's story unfold with highlights as everyone has already mentioned.

There will still be Rothes to follow and the Bassenthwaite youngsters, though it seems uncertain so far how that data will be presented.

Hope Cirrus gets to see an osprey when she visits the area this weekend!

  • Hi everyone.

Thanks for starting the last Daily Update of 2010 Diane.  Can't believe how quickly the season's flown by and it only seems like yestarday we were all waiting with baited breath for EJ to arrive back in March.  Soon the Barnacle Geese will arrive from the far north, trumpeting their presence as they enjoy the milder winter of Britain.  Mind you with last year's Artic conditions in many parts od the UK, I wouldn't be surprised if the Barnacle Geese were thinking:  'Perhaps we've taken a wrong turn and flown north instead of south.'

Of course with the snow on the LG nest early in the season just after EJ had arrived, I'd imagine she was wondering if someone had moved the calander forward a couple of months while she was catching a nice big fish in a west African river.

jsb:  Well done spotting an Osprey on the nest early this morning.

Tiger:  Thanks for the links to old threads from last year.  Many thanks to you and Cathy for the countdown clock.

Linda:  Thanks for the pics of the nest with EJ and three tiny chicks, and the nest as it is now.

margobird:  It is going to be strange not having to catch up with the events of the nest overnight and in the very early hours of the morning.  Of course I'd often find myself posting on here in the middle of the night.  Funny how that used to be called insomnia, and now it's called Ospreytis.

I'm looking at the empty nest at the moment, hoping for some small birds to make an appearance but alas none yet.  I hope the Red Squirrels haven't scared off the small birds, with stories about phantom sticks on the Osprey nest.

    Paul.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • Hi all

I said my serious thankyou and goodbye earlier this week, but can't resist The Last Post. I agree with Margobird, Heron, your sense of humour is infectious and when I saw the word 'dunderheid' in one of your posts this week, I really did LOL!!  As an English person (well, half Scottish!) living in Scotland I LOVE Scottish humour, well, especially from where you hail from, Paul. Everyone here has something  to offer and this group seem to have melded into a well balanced bunch. I hope that some others from Daily Page and LG blog will join us on the' Weekly ' chat page ( should we rename it Everyday Chat?!!)  where we can talk every day, all through the Winter.

  • Evening all ... just been reading through today's posts ... the last for this thread! It has been an absolute pleasure to be a part of this group, thank you to everyone .... and I look forward to more of the same next season. Meanwhile, see you over on the Weekly Chat!

  • Just caught up from this morning. thanks for all your posts.  Lindybird, for reminding us what they were like 2months ago and the nest now.

Will have to paste the links Tiger gave into favourites and look at them.

Thanks once again to you all for your friendship, its much appreciated.  See you over on Weekly Chat from time to time.

  • Just had to say ... well, it's all been said, really ... thanks for being such a lovely bunch of Osprey lovers sharing this daily thread.  Thanks to all the clever people for providing such wonderful captures - I never managed to do them from video, and got lazy about doing them from still camera because others were doing it for me!  Thanks to those organised people who provided statistics and past records - and finally thanks to Tiger (and Cathy) for the countdown clock which is ticking us through to EJ's arrival in March 2011!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Just wanted to add my thanks to one and all.  The pleasure this site gives us is amazing.  I don't post often but love reading all the blogs both here, on the official blog and on the weekly chat.  A special thankyou must be said to those of you who keep vigil and keep pics and videos when us in the uk are tucked up in  bed. Safe journey to all our ospreys and see you all soon :o)
