Daily Update (LG Nest) Thursday 26th August

Hi folks,

It was a very quiet day after early morning sightings.   No juves on the nest all day. Rejoicings at last. It looks as though they have set off on their migration and that Odin has probably followed them.

We will have to wait and see from the official blog at LG but hopefully they will confirm that the bairns are on their way at last and Odin is too.

Sad though it is , the end of the season is nigh.  God speed and safe journey to them all.,

  • Morning all.

Lynette You voiced my thoughts entirely.  The mist seems to emphasise the silence - don't even hear any other birds.  If they have all gone, God speed on their journeys.

  • Morning All. I went straight to the main blog page to see if there was an LG report this morning, but there is nothing. I wonder if the youngsters have gone, or have they found a loch or even the fish farm, and are still around.

  • aquilareen        Just love the chick conversation. Great.

So for the first time in 97 days the nest is devoid of chicks. We got to get through a long winter (or hot summer in some people's case) before we have another brood.

  • Good morning all.  I think you have all expressed my feelings one way and another.  So sad the season is over, but relieved 'our' ospreys have allowed instinct to kick in.  What a wonderful season in osprey terms it has been.  Dedicated parents returning on cue, three magnificent offspring, ready to take on the world.  I know our joint thoughts will be with them all until their return.  We can only marvel at nature, and far be it for me to wish our time away, but here is to 26 March for EJ's timely return, and to 3 April for our Magnificent Odin return to his mate.

By the way, I got my version of The Scottish Osprey by Philip Brown via Amazon - unfortunately I have thrown away the paperwork, but I think the book seller was in Machynlleth.  It was a good condition second hand book, with a cover.  It has an SNB (not an ISBN) number 434 08910 9.  Original price £7.50 published in 1979, and signed by the original owner in 1979.  It cost me about £20.

Can I thank absolutely everyone on this blog for being such a great crowd, so full of fun, humour, good temper and most of all an impressive font of knowledge.  I take my hat off to you all!  Not only have I learned such a lot about osprey, but at last have started joining in!  It is such fun.  Perhaps I am not such a technophob after all!

Methinks I was a bit late posting this morn's "conversation".
Now it is probably more like "Are we there yet?"

    Sounds familiar :)

LOL at the earlier conversation. Made me laugh :)

  • Morning all and as I log on, it is to an empty nest.   How encouraging that is because it means that hopefully they are at last on their way, hurrah, and a bit sad as well for we won't know how they fare.  Still, nature in all its disguises will keep watch.

  • SheilaFE    I look forward to your report on "Scottish Ospreys".  I see someone else seems to have bought one overnight at Abebooks. Cheapest one available is now £7.75 inc. postage.

Strangely I have been thinking about the name Rothiemurchus. When I first came across it I found it almost impossible to get my head around it. Now I think it is a great name.

  • I thought it a difficult name to remember, Tiger  but when you get used to it, its great.  We lowlanders are not used to getting our tongues around the Scottish lingo!

Glad to hear that we have made new friends on here this year, its been such a great atmosphere, and hope that next year we have the same contributors and also that the 'newbies' will all stay with us for the fun (& the tears, sometimes).   It's been a pleasure to know you all: everyone has something different to contribute, even those of us who know little about the birds except what we have picked up from the blogs.  Thanks for all the interesting information imparted, and also for all the fun!

  • Morning all and thanks for earlier non reports and pics of EN. Still EN and quiet at the moment. Just waiting for confirmation on the main blog that they have indeed left the area.

  • ps  Tiger - My OH has bought me the David Gessner book for my birthday which was mentioned the other day, so I'll have something to read in the winter!
