This thread replaces Satellite Tracked Ospreys March-August 2010
It has been set up to follow the Autumn 2010 migration of ospreys tracked by satellite, other than those from Loch Garten. Comments about the travels of Rothes, hatched at Loch Garten in 2009, should be posted on the “Tracking Rothes and Mallachie” thread: http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/groups/lochgartenospreys/forum/t/3440.aspx
UK Organisations known to be currently tracking ospreys, and the birds involved, are as follows:
Roy Dennis, Highland Foundation for Wildlife – Scotland
Website: http://www.roydennis.org/osprey/index.asp
Beatrice
Adult female, hatched 2000, tagged 2008, ring Green 5B. Beatrice moved to a new nest in East Moray in Spring 2010, as her previous mate did not return from migration. On all of her tracked migrations, she has taken a stopover on the River Adour, near Dax in the Landes department of SW France. Her wintering site is on the Guadiaro river in southern Spain, NE of Gibraltar.
Morven
Adult female, hatched 2003, tagged 2008, ring White PE. Morven’s nest site is near Forres, Moray (with Talisman). So far, she has only taken stopovers on spring migrations, in the Villaviciosa estuary in the Asturias region of northern Spain - http://www.riadevillaviciosa.org/ . Her wintering site is the desert coast of Mauritania, north of the capital, Nouakchott.
Nimrod
Adult male, hatched 2001, tagged 2008, ring Red 7J. Nimrod’s nest site is also near Forres. He tends to take a stopover, of varying length, around the Ile d’Oleron, Charente-Maritime, western France. He winters on the Rio Cachine in Guinea Bissau.
Talisman
Adult male, hatched 1999, tagged 2009, ring Black 6R. Talisman’s nest site is near Forres, Moray (with Morven). On both his tracked migrations, he has had a stopover at the Roxo Reservoir, Alentejo, Portugal http://www.avesdeportugal.info/sitroxo.html . He winters on the Ilha de Enu, Bijagos Islands, Guinea Bissau – not far from Rothes.
Red 8T
Adult male, hatched 2001, tagged 2009, ring Red 8T. Red 8T nests in Strathspey, near the Rothiemurchus fishery. His wintering site is on the Casamanche River near Ziguinchor, southern Senegal. He doesn’t seem to do stopovers!
Rothiemurchus
Immature male hatched 2009, ring Blue AE. Hatched on Rothiemurchus Estate, near Aviemore, Highland. On his first migration south, after a narrow escape over the Atlantic, he spent 5 weeks on the Rio Paiva, Aveiro District, Portugal. He continued safely to Africa and has since spent his time exploring Senegal.
Spey
Juvenile Male, hatched 2010, ring Blue AS. Hatch site near Elgin, East Moray, Scotland.

There is no current satellite tracking, but posts may occasionally refer back to the tracking which was done from 1999-2002 - here's the link to all the records:

Now the European tracking projects:

Erika http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/4923
Adult female, age unknown, tagged 2007. Erika’s nest site is in Virumaa county, north eastern Estonia. She spent last winter near the Ad Damazin dam in Sudan, on the Blue Nile.
Finnish Museum of Natural History, University of Helsinki
Jukka http://www.fmnh.helsinki.fi/english/zoology/satelliteospreys/jukka/index.htm
Adult male, ringed & tagged 2009, ring Red PS. Jukka nests in Pälkäne, southern Finland, and winters at the Lagdo Reservoir, Cameroon.

Karin
Adult female, ringed & tagged Feb 2009 on Mallorca, ring Green 13. Unlike all the birds above, Karin was tagged at her wintering site, the S’Albufera reserve in north east Mallorca. In 2009 she migrated via the Parc Regional de Lorraine in NE France, to Lake Vanern in Sweden where an observer confirmed her to be nesting, before returning to Mallorca for the winter.
In spring 2010 the project team again posted reports tracking Karin to Lorraine, but nothing further. It may be that “no news is good news” as the project is focused on protecting ospreys in the Balearic Islands. The team has also tagged three other ospreys, which turned out to be non-migratory Mediterranean types.
Sociedad de Ciencias Aranzadi – Euskadi (Spanish Basque Country)

Spring 2010 migration: http://www.alertapescadora.com/berto.asp?start=6
Berto
Adult male, age unknown, ringed Oct 08 and tagged April 10, ring Yellow 3O. Berto was tagged at his regular stopover site, the Urdaibai reserve in the Spanish Basque Country. The tracking report follows him to near Uddevalla, southern Sweden, though it’s not clear if this is a nest site. His wintering site is unknown as yet.
And in North America
Rob Bierregaard, University of North Carolina
Rob’s web page to track the 2010 migrations: http://www.bioweb.uncc.edu/Bierregaard/migration10.htm
The ospreys he is currently tracking are:
Adult males - Mr Hannah and Sr. Bones from Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, Gunny and Sandford from Westport River, Massachusetts, Neale from Jamestown, Rhode Island. North Fork Bob was captured and tagged at a nest on Long Island where he was intruding.
Subadults - Two year old female Penelope, hatched on Martha’s Vineyard in 2008 and tagged as a juvenile, returned from Latin America to the NE USA in the spring and has spent the summer exploring mainland Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire. Immatures - The sole survivor of the 2009 juveniles, Buck, spent the summer on Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, where he is expected to stay until spring 2011.
Juveniles – Thatch from Lewes, Delaware and Belle from Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.

Sue C thanks for all your hard work, this will make the tracking so much easier to keep up with.
Margobird
margobird, No problem - I enjoy doing this kind of research.
A recap on Beatrice, the only one who was already migrating when I started the new thread:
Early August - left nest, fishing on River Avon
10th - Started migration, roosted near Cortachy, Angus - 68 km
11th - Reached The Hirsel outside Coldstream, Borders - 128 km
12th - roosted at Kingston-on-Soar, near Kegworth, Leics - 320 km
13th - Crossed channel to Deauville, Normandy - 428 km
14th - Reached Degre, NW of Le Mans, Sarthe - 145 km
15th - Backtracked in poor weather, ending up near Gorron, Mayenne - 106 km
16th - Better progress to Plaizac near Rouillac, Charente - 305 km
A really straight route apart from the 15th. From Rouillac to her regular stopover on the Adour is only about 225 km, so she's probably there already.
Has anyone else noticed these photos, recently posted on Birdguides, of a satellite tagged osprey taken on Menorca:

http://217.158.75.180/iris/pictures.asp?f=262716
This has got to be one of the non-migratory ospreys tagged by the Balearic Islands osprey project.

Well we have now. Those are really great pictures. Thanks for drawing attention to them.

Sue C thanks for the update on Beatrice and good to read she went on to make good progress after hitting bad weather.
Have just managed to get into Roy Dennis' site, and Beatrice reached her stopover on the Adour last night. Exactly as she did in 2008 and 2009, she seems to have used the confluence of the Garonne and Dordogne as a "waypoint". Some non-migration news:
The Bassenthwaite juveniles have both been exploring further afield, and Big Yan has been to the summit of Skiddaw!
Rob Bierregaard has done updates for some birds. Penelope seems to have found her ideal spot near Manchester, New Hampshire: http://www.bioweb.uncc.edu/Bierregaard/maps%202010/Penelope-2010.htm
Also, some on-the-spot sleuthing has solved the mystery of North Fork Bob ............. http://www.bioweb.uncc.edu/Bierregaard/maps%202010/Bob-2010.htm
Thanks SueC. I see we have a new juvenile tagged.:
"18th August. Beatrice got to her favourite stop-over on the River Adour last evening. Our new young osprey from near Elgin, fitted with a Talisman Energy transmitter, visited Spey Bay recently"
