WEEKLY CHAT (NON-OSPREY) SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2020

Hallo all.  Have a wonderful week.

I had wondered when we would get photos from Felixstowe Ferry. They were great, I really enjoyed them all, and really clear definition.

Glad you like them - I haven't been down there that much this year, though we had a flurry of visits when the skylarks, whimbrels and short-eared owl were all showing.

I wonder whether the ferry is running now?

Yes, it is - but my old friend the Ferryman is now running fishing trips in his own boat and someone else is manning the Ferry.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • It's been a good day today. I had a nice swim this morning, followed by a nice long bath and hair wash at home ......... luxury! Tonight we've got a meeting of our local Photographic Society via Zoom - this should be interesting, to say the least. We'll be remotely watching a talk about Venice, which I'm looking forward to. Next week, all being well, we should be having a socially distanced photographic walkabout. We've had a few of these over the summer and it's been great to see people I've missed - as well as taking photos of any lurking birds while everyone else is concentrating on scenery!

  • News from France not as good as,I was hoping for, but he's getting great treatment and that is very reassuring !
  • Morning all:  Well, family left at 3 a.m. this morning and have just this minute arrived home. Another amazingly fast drive with some excitement coming and going.  Apparently it's hunting season (boo!) in Arizona now and the deer apparently hang around towns because they realize they're safer there. So the kids are driving through the small town of Yarnell  about 5 a.m when they spot 6 deer just standing in the middle of the highway. They slowed down, expecting the deer to take off but there was no response until they stopped almost immediately in front of them and hit the horn, which sent the poor deer skittering all over the road.  On the way home today, they passed three fires behind LA, one of which was burning right alongside the highway;  smoke was very bad they said.   It was a good visit with only a minor hiccup or two.   Totally bizarre weather though:  Very hot and dry Sunday, hot and humid Monday, cloudy and mildly humid Tuesday, thick fog with pale afternoon sun Wednesday and overcast with no sun forecast for today, but PatO, clouds do have a definite faint orange/yellow tinge that's a bit eerie but not that Armageddon-like glow that hung over San Francisco,

OG:  Did J get his new phone sorted out?  Has SiL done the three peaks ride before?   Re vets, I see that someone (BBC?) is filming a new version of All Creatures Great and Small.....

Heather: Gosh,  hope your bro gets over whatever it was quickly, but that's a reminder for us all not to ignore those kinds of symptoms.  Just saw your update;  keep us informed and take care.

Third load of laundry in and have tidied up and run the vacuum quickly over the house. Not planning much for the rest of the day and going to have coffee and pastries in Brit friend's garden tomorrow morning...

    Take care everyone.

  • 'All Creatures ...' is on Channel 5. That filled me with dread - but I watched the first episode and it was pretty good. Hope it continues that way. I (and possibly some others here ...) am old enough to remember (only just!) the original, which I really enjoyed.
  • HEATHER - thanks for update. Thinking of you and brother - and his wife, of course.

ANNETTE - sorry about your random weather, and orange skies. Glad it was a good visit and that family got home safely. J has accepted OH's help with phone - they have just finished as I wrote that! Ex SiL has climbed Ben Nevis many times, not sure whether he has done the other too - and definitely not done the cycling between them, but he has put in a lot of oractice so far. New "All Creatures" includes Diana Rigg who died today, but it's all finished and in the can (or whatever the current expression is!).

    Medicine time ... .

I saw the trailers for this.  My OH, being an ex farmer, adored the original years ago, and watched it over and over. This new one looked good, and has some excellent actors featured, but my OH will not be persuaded to give it a try!

  • Heather, I'm sorry to hear about your brother and hope you get better news in the next few days. His overall health may have a bearing on his recovery. But of course, you will know a lot about strokes, having been in healthcare. Thinking of you and his family.
  • I rushed off to the biggest M&S this morning, with my heart in my mouth coming home, as my little car failed to start the other day and I had to cross my fingers that it would not let me down today. I'm hoping the longer than usual outing will have done it good.

I took back some bras I'd bought in the wrong size (what was I thinking?!) Then I browsed around the Sale they're having: lots of strange looking blouses etc. But then I found, joy of joys, a pair of chino trousers in my size in a beautiful pale yellow. They reminded me of a pair I had years ago, and wore and wore every summer until they fell apart. When I got home, they fitted!! Hooray!

On the journey home, I got caught up in a big traffic gridlock caused by someone having to be taken away in an Air Ambulance. I had to turn around and find another way back. Hope the poor soul whoever it was, was alright once they got the care they needed.
  • I also remember watching the original All Creatures with my daughter and Mom - we loved it.  A gentle series...  The actor who plays Siegfried has some resemblance to the original actor.  Yes, saw that Diana Rigg died today - so glamorous in....in...The Avengers  (thank you Google) .

When the family was here, we were all treated to yet another wonderful visit by the  hawk, who spent about 30 minutes on the fountain exasperating our local crow family before dropping down to the lower level to sit on a submerged rock and take a shower under one of the streams from above.  We were all transfixed.  :-)
