Daily Update (LG Nest) Wednesday 4th August

Hi folks,   not a lot has happened yesterday..  There was some acitivity in the morning and very little in the afternoon/evening unless I missed anything.

Are they perhaps getting ready for migration. We non't see the GEM's on the nest quite so frequently now, could they be fishing themselves or are EJ and Odin dropping fish into trees as was suggested yesterday, for them to pick up.  This is a part of the ospreys life that we don't know much about but what a preveledge to watch them through all these weeks growing up.  I'm prattling on just for something to say.  I'll hand over tothe night staff and leave you with a poinant reminder of the nest. --  DESSERTED!!

Barbara Jean: Would not the fact that they are all male this year (compared with all female last year) explain the fact that they are that bit more advanced?

    EN - raining.

I don't know if males are more advanced than females. They  are supposed to  weigh less and  so fledge sooner. But other than that  maybe Alan or Tiger or someone with more knowledge can answer that . I  have only been watching  for 3 years .   Roy's Dennis's book doesn't mention  the difference in   maturity between males and females.

I know Roy is the expert, but  even he admits sometimes he is wrong. I still think  Middle is a female . She/he has always been larger than Eldest  or Titch . Also Eldest and Titch have the high pitched  screech of a male. Middle sounds like EJ.

    Ah-- we will never know

  • Can confirm that the rain has been plip - plopping onto the microphone for quite a few minutes - not heavy rain, but still I'm sure making the nest wet once again.  Good job they don't sleep on it now, much.

Can hear Osprey calls in the distance, as they warn each other of goings on around them.

EDIT   Just read the above from Barbara Jean -   I too, have always thought Middle Chick to be female and this was confirmed to me by when she grew, she not only sounded like EJ, but looked a lot like her too, and her behaviour is also reminiscent of EJ's.

  • Barbara Jean: Surely the fact that males fledge sooner is because, being smaller, they reach maturity slightly earlier. I don't think there is much of a difference in size between any of them, which is why it is so difficult to tell #2 and #3 apart.

As you rightly say we'll never know!

  • Hi everyone.

Thanks for the updates and pics.  Thanks for the heads up about the new blog, Joan.

ENS at the moment.  Here's hoping the Ospreys can inspire Celtic to overturn a 3-0 Champions League defict this evening.  One of them shouting encoragement in the background.  LOL

  • What a brilliant day! Thank you so much for all your commentary. Linda, Joan, Cirrus, Lynette. Your pictures are fantastic. It is so much more relaxing just reading it now, than trying to follow the action as it happens, but definitely not as exciting.

  • Odin just delivered a small fish.

  • One noisy GEM on the nest ... Odin flies in with a fish ... another GEM flies in and grabs the fish from a terrified looking Odin!

  • Odin always seems to bring an intruder with him!!

  • GEM has just arrived at the nest.  Now Odin has just delivered a fish, as a second GEM landed on the nest.  Odin departs, leaving one GEM mantling the fish and the second looking on.  Both now calling.  Possible intruder in the area.

  • Joan, he really did look scared as he kicked the fish sideways as he landed.
