MANTON BAY – AUGUST 2020 to end of FEBRUARY 2021

Continued from Manton Bay – July 2020.

The history of the Manton Bay nest, breeding stats and links to previous threads can be found here

The season so far:  The resident pair both returned on 16 March - Blue 33(11) at 07:12 and Maya at 13:16.   Maya, for the second consecutive year, laid four eggs – the first on 29 March with the other three first seen 4, 6 and 9 April.   Maya and Blue 33(11) faithfully incubated the four eggs and on day 38, chick #1 hatched 6 May c 13:20 followed by chick #2 on 8 May c 06:10, chick #3 on 10 May c14:45, and chick #4 on 13 May c20:45.   On 16 June the chicks were ringed with their blue darvics – Chick #1- 080, Chick #2- 081, Chick #3-082 and Chick #4-083.  On 26 June, Blue 080, aged 51 days, fledged at 16:03 followed by Blue 082, aged 50 days, at 06:15 on 29 June, Blue 081, aged 54 days at 16:03 on 1 July and Blue 083, aged 55 days at 07:30 on 7 July.

Maya and Blue 33(11) have done a tremendous job rearing their family and 33 once more has proved himself to be a fantastic provider as there has not been one day this season when he has failed to bring in fish for his family.

Thanks to their fantastic parents, Blue 080, 081, 082 and 083 have had the best possible start in life growing into strong, healthy young ospreys and soon will go their separate ways setting off south on their first migration.

  • Thanks Patily - you are not nit picking and have just solved the discrepancy:-)

Rutland has posted Monday, 23rd August. I knew I had seen him on the 24th and with them posting the day "Monday" I have just went forward a day hence me writing Tuesday 24th.

So Rutland need to clarify what they mean - it is either Sunday 23 August or Monday 24 August.

Monday 24 August is definitely correct for 081 but we are now not sure when they last saw 080 who was last captured on the nest Saturday, 22 August.

  • Aha yes Karen and Patily this is very confusing but I am sure the person that told us on Sunday the 2 juveniles were last seen flying together at 9.15 on Sunday morning so possibly that is the last sighting of 080! I will see if I can speak to them tomorrow to confirm what day they mean Sunday or Monday as we never saw him again on the Sunday whilst we were there.
Thank you for the update about Maya it's raining again but we're heading back to see if 33 is still about and will let you know.
  • LAM - thanks. I was hoping you would ask them to clarify :-)

I recall your post telling us they were both seen flying off Sunday (23rd) morning and that 080 did not return however 081 did.

That make sense for I last saw 080 early evening on Saturday, 22nd and you mentioned you did not see him around the nest site during your visit on the 23rd and we know I saw 081 on the 24th.

So possible 080's last sighting is early morning of the 23rd and 081 was last seen early morning 24th.

Meanwhile, I hope it fairs up soon for you both and you see 33 as I suspect he will still be here the fact that Maya is still around for usually the male takes off last. But we never know.

    Enjoy your evening :-)

  • So sorry we are unable to return to the hide tonight as it is torrential rain and we will be totally soaked! Sadly will be tomorrow morning now.
  • Rutland have now amended their FB post to show the last sightings of 080 and 081 as Monday 24th August.

  • LAM - I don't blame you and you probably wouldn't see much as I am sure 33 and Maya will be taking cover in the trees!!

Best you both get a good nights rest somewhere dry and warm as with the conditions tonight they will both be around tomorrow and hopefully it will be much drier.

Meantime Lyn and Mike have a good evening and thanks for all your updates and captures today - BFN :-)
  • Thank you Karen you too have a good evening. We are pretty tough but this rain /storm here is horrendous! Large glass of wine required with Monty and Gardeners World to wipe away the disappointment of not getting back to the Ospreys! :-)
  • Thanks for the clarification everyone, you are brave souls LAM, enjoy your evening. Tomorrow should be better, but Maya & 33 may head off, with favourable winds.
