LOCH ARKAIG - AUGUST 2020 TO MARCH 2021. Highlights are Mary GK's and Geemeff's wonderful videos of the 2020 season

August is the month when we've seen the Loch Arkaig ospreys depart on their journey south. We've enjoyed watching them this year - the wonderful parenting skills of Aila and Louis, and the antics of their 3 chicks, Captain, Vera and Doddie.

Mary GK did an absolutely wonderful video summarising the 2020 season. Thank you so much Mary! And here is Geemeff's great compilation, thank you!

2020 last dates:

Doddie JJ6 was last seen at the nest on Saturday 15th August 2020

Aila was last seen on Saturday 22nd August 2020

Captain JJ7 was last seen on Sunday 23rd August 2020

Vera JJ8 was last seen on Saturday 5 September.

An unidentified osprey was seen off camera on Sunday 6 September eating a fish. This could well have been Louis, having arrived and found no Vera around to feed.

Doddie JJ6 was videod and photographed fishing for over a fortnight at Avalon Marshes in Somerset

  • Tussle there was, JJ7 on our right gets the fish from JJ6. JJ6 had his body between the fish and JJ7 but foolishly turned so that JJ7 could get at the fish (schoolboy error on JJ6's part). Ian

It's a flatfish, Ian. Louis has been bringing quite a few of them recently. You get a slightly better view a few seconds later, but not much.

  • One of the young on the nest, a little calling but mostly grooming
  • How quickly the time flies. It’s been a wonderful season. Aila and Louis have once again shown us what incredible parents they are. Thanks for the links, Korky.
  • I don't watch this nest much, which is why I need to be told that quite a few flat fish have been delivered recently Geemeff I'm talking to you, so I hope you'll excuse me if I get a few details not quite spot on. Expressionless

12.46, JJ6 is on the nest when Louis delivers a whole (not flat) fish. Louis hardly gets the chance to land before JJ6 is at the fish. Louis' toes suffer again. JJ7 arrives then JJ8. JJ6 gets a decent feed before JJ7 takes the fish. I don't think JJ8 gets any.  Ian

No excuses needed - it's difficult to see what Louis' bringing these days when those hulking great chicks dive all over him and block the view! It's even been difficult to read their ring numbers lately the way they've been mobbing / scrumming around.

  • 14.46, JJ8 is on the nest when Louis delivers a flat fish. Yet again, Louis suffers an assualt on his toes. JJ6 arrives, so far JJ8 still has the fish. Ian

  • Thank you everyone, great start to the month. Super fish stats. Louis & Alia are such a great pair & have come a long way since their first season of 2017.
Looking at the nest now, it looks just as it did when they first came back, this is possibly the only nest we see, that gets 'cleared down' when fledging due. Wonderful! We need to saviour these views this month.

  • Hi Everyone

I have absolutely loved the Loch Arkaig nest this season....

I know it's not quite the end of the season yet, but I won't be able to do a video once the family have gone in a few weeks time, so I am a bit early.   I have never tried to do a video of a whole season before, so it's been quite a challenge to get it to come in at around 30 minutes. So get in a comfy chair, with cup of coffee/tea or a wee dram in hand and hopefully enjoy the Famous Five.
