Weekly Chat, Sunday, August 1, 2010

Hi, all. Annette may be busy with her friends this evening, so I'm starting the new thread for the week. Be sure to read the last few posts on the old one. AQ is off on a history bus tour, and she promises a report and maybe photos. Yay. TerryM, enjoy your holiday and I hope the weather is nice!

My back is well and truly out, so I'm going to bed. Sorry that I can't make any specific replies. I'll try to catch up soon. Everyone have a wonderful week!

  • Diane: Thanks!  Yes, busy!  Will be able to catch up tomorrow. Hi all!

  • Hello to August Everyone!

Thanks to Diane for starting us off this week - oh dear, you are in the wars, do hope your back will put itself right soon - have you just strained it a bit by lifting things you shouldn't?

Started out sunny as we awoke here this morning, but soon clouded over - seems to be the pattern of things lately. So enjoyed the programme last night on BBC2 - The Proms special tribute to Stephen Sondheim - he was there, too!  It included songs from 'The Demon Barber', &  'Sunday in the Park with George'  etc.,  and included performances from our own special baritone from Wales, Bryn Terfal, and a show stopping rendition of  'Send in The Clowns' from our very own very special Dame Judi Dench. The audience were very appreciative, and roared their approval.

The other day, we finally caught up with the last of the 'Wild Wales' series - if you missed it, do try to see repeats, it was the most wonderful wildlife programme we have had on for a long while- beautiful photography and a great commentary from a Welshman who knew so much about his captivating countryside. The last episode (there were 3) included film of Ospreys fishing in the estuary where the famous Portmerion is built (thought of you, Alan!) and of Peregrines hunting.

Here is another pic of the Flower Show to brighten up Sunday:

A case of love the purple & lilac theme again!  Dark planting is very in vogue, apparently.

  • ps.  Don't know why my camera is putting those coloured lines at the bottom, it's been playing up and some of the pictures won't come out at all.  boo hoo.

  • Nice morning here – our 42nd Anniversary today – not doing anything special (we do what we want all the time anyway, and celebrating usually means food, which is not good for us!).  Grandson began his length of Scotland cycle ride Friday – Dunnet Head to Golspie, then Saturday Golspie to their home near Inverness.  Today he does the 70 mile length of the Great Glen to Fort William (with the company of his Dad yesterday and today, otherwise it’s all on his own!).

TerryM – our Carrots aren’t in pots, but they are in a raised bed, and on ground which was not cultivated until two years ago – also there are very few other veg gardens around here to attract veg pests.  I do hope you will get good weather for your holiday – you have waited so long for it – and hope you see plenty at LG and on the Moray Coast.  Enjoy!!

AQ – Pleased you suffered no damage in the storm.  I hope you are enjoying your history trip (with some better weather for seeing things) and look forward to some photos.  Stay safe!

Diane – thanks for starting the new week for us.  Sorry about your poor back, it sounds very painful – do take care, and I hope it rights itself very soon.  Have some flowers to cheer you up:

Annette – I hope you’ve had a great time with your friends - “see” you back here soon!

Lindy – thanks for that lovely corner plot at the show – I would want to sit in that one – so peaceful.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • PS - the picture is a "random" section of the cool corner!  The cool pink flowers are as intended, I hadn't realised some of the Godetias would be so bright, and the Evening Primroses are self-sown!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Good morning all and first of all Happy Anniversary original goldfinch and also thanks for the pics.  Hope you have a nice day together.

  • Good morning Lindybird, lovely pic.

Diane hope your back improves soon.

We had a brilliant day at Goodwood yesterday.  We had rain here yesterday morning, some of it really heavy for a short time and it drizzled all the way to Goodwood.  As we got there it stopped and apart from a few drops of rain a couple of times weather turned out OK.  OH back a 20-1 horse for £5 and it won.  This was the first race and netted him £100.  He was over the moon we very rarely back a winner at Goodwood.  I them had a winner which netted £25 so we were really pleased.  We are not gamblers but save for our Goodwood trip and this is the first time we came away with more money that we went with, so were two very happy people.  Wonderful day out anyway, atmosphere is terrific.  We love to people watch as well, some of the young girls had really dressed up but the shoes they were wearing.  6 inch heels which sink into the ground and at the end of the day there were quite a few of them carrying their shoes.  I always wear flatties otherwise I could not do all the walking that we do between the saddling up enclosure, winners enclose and the race track.  Got home about 7.30 absolutely shattered but it was worth it.  Lindybird as you will guess I got very excited when OH's horse romped home in first place but did act like a lady.

    Have a good day all.

OG just read it is your 42nd today, Congratulations, we have ours towards the end of the month on the 24th.  So , we both got married in 1968, those were the days.

Lovely flower display, my garden is mostly dead nettle flowering in spring along with spring bulbs. Afraid I don't much like gardening as such.

  • Afternoon all,

Thanks for all the earlier chat and pics.

Margobird : Glad you had an excellent and profitable day at Goodwood yesterday. I dont often bet on the horses although in my younger days I used to pay regular lunchtime visits to the bookies when I lived in Dundee.

OG : Thanks for the lovely picture and a congratulations on your anniversary.

Diane : I hope that your back is better soon.

Lindybird : I am glad you managed to see the Wild Wales program as I also thought it was excellent. I have visited Portmerion many times but never thought to check the estuary for fishing ospreys. The guests in the hotel however must get some great views:

  • Glad you enjoyed your day at the races, Margobird, and was successful.  Don't much like horseracing but the atmosphere must have been great.

Son and daughter-in-law went with friends to Newmarket a few weeks back and although they don't go in for horseraceing, they thoroughly enjoyed the day, full of atmosphere and the like.

OH has a cricketing injury, stopped a ball in his groin which has resulted in a DVT so have to keep going to the clinic on a daily basis until dosage of medication is regulated.  That's what you get when you umpire, never mind playing the game.
