Amazing numbers of Black Kites
03 Mar: Clear skies with a moderate to fresh south-westerly wind. As from 08:45 Black Kites have been pouring in over the Rock, with an estimated 4000 by 09:30!! The Moroccan birder, Rachid, based on the opposite side of the Strait, mentioned that the number of Black Kites accumulating there yesterday evening was of the order of 10,000 to 25,000 birds, and every tree and bush held flocks of Black Kites roosting, and ready to cross the following day.

What an amazing sight that must have been!

Wow! That must have been incredible to see.

Apparently Black Kites "are opportunistic feeders and often pick up dead animals or steal from other birds of prey. They often hunt near lakes and rivers..."...

So if they do venture across the Channel the ospreys of Poole had better watch out! :)

Are those numbers the normal amount crossing?

There are several sightings of Black Kites in Dorset each year.

During the spring migration there are large concentrations of Black Kites, the most abundant migratory raptor in Western Europe, in the Strait of Gibraltar. So not unusual just large numbers for a single day
