What a useful thread this is becoming.  Thank you Karen and others who have contributed!

I have just come across this article, entitled Wide Sargasso Seaweed:  5,500 mile algae belt keeps on growing.  It could have consequences for ospreys in their over-winter quarters south of Gambia.

When I was in St Lucia and Tobago a couple of years ago, this seaweed was a huge problem, not only for tourism but just how to get rid of it when it lands.

There must be a use for it in agriculture or gardening! A mulch, compost material. I saw it being used to fertilise sandy soil in the Outer Hebrides.
