There have been a couple of posts about people posting ringing information prior to it being publicly announced. While reading the posts on Rutland's Facebook page this morning, I came across a reply from them regarding this which may be of interest to those wondering should we, should we not post ringing information.
The question put to Rutland was quote
"Why have Rutland given out chick ringing information to a member of the public so it appears on a RSPB chat forum , surely it is up to Rutland to post official news so we can all share it"
and Rutland's response quote:
Rutland Osprey Project Once the chicks are on the live web camera post-ringing the ring numbers become public knowledge. The alternative is to shut off the nest cameras until we issue more information which I think you'd agree is not ideal. The main outcomes are all chicks and parents are healthy and safe, neither of those issues were compromised by ring numbers being placed on social media. We are a small team and do not have one staff member dedicated to social media. With that sometimes we can not post information as soon as we'd like to. Many thanks
Here is a link to Rutland's Facebook Entry should anyone wish to view it.
So I think we can safely agree that it is OK :-)
