Weekly Chat, Sunday July 25, 2010

Hi all:  First off, con't miss the last page of last week's chat for lovely photo of Alan's hibiscus and OG's very informative shots of the nest at LG, showing the perch under the nest where chick #1 likes to sit.

OG. Assume plumber on the list for next week.  So Boat of Garten actually has something to do with a real boat!  I thought it was some obscure Scottish vernacular-ish term that had nothing to do with a boat.  There was a nature program here last week about "preparing" an environment for some species that are living in an area that is expected to be threatened by higher ocean levels in the coming years. As with the Lapwings, the change has to be made gradually.

Cirrus.  A 12-mile hike! I probably burned a couple of hundred calories just thinking about it.

Was in the garden all day - as I type have the soaker hose going on the camellias, which I fed and which need deep watering about twice in the summer; they're putting out buds now.  Also fed the roses and plumeria. Found a volunteer duranta repens growing in one of the plumeria pots - I thought it was familiar but only recognized it today.    Sun came out around 11 and lovely cool evening now.

  • What I should have said re photos is - Can anyone tell me in a very simple way, how to post pics on to this site? That is, at present, photos that OH has put on my computer. Sorry, I'm a complete idiot.

  • Hi Cirrus I am like you and worry about our nature after the diverse weather we have had, during the winter and now the long hot summer with very little rain here.  I watch the blackbirds going over my lawn but the ground is much too hard for them to find their worms.  Fortunately they do get some the dried worms I put out sprinkled with water to make them a bit more moist.  I have no trouble with dried worms all the birds love them especially the greedy starlings.  I do scare them off at ttimes to give the other birds a chance.  The downside is the cost of them £2.49 a tub and they are eating far more than they usually do at this time of the year.  All due to the weather I am sure.  Just hope that we will get some decent rain at some point so nature can get back on an even keel.

  • Heather B I am impressed a grapevine in the Highlands, obviusly likes your diverse weather.  Certainly does allow you to be boastful about it.  that must be a sight to see.

I have been trying on and off this year to capture pics from the cams which so many of our friends do so well, but i am a bit thick where that is concerned.  Had many tips on now to do it but spent so much time attempting it  I was missing all the actions on the nests that I watch.  Have decided now to have a go when our ospreys leave us and OH says he will help me.  Oh dear that will be as bad as a husband trying to teach a wife to drive, he is very patient but I can be a bit slow on the uptake.  I also have a friend that I go away with to a farm in Somerset in October and she is going to help me too.

  • Margobird - I have managed to put a picture on the Gallery. Better than nothing I think!! I still don't know how to put pics almost instantly on the page, or direct from camera

Give me a little time and I'll post instructions on your personal page, Just no time to give it clarity of thought to make it as easy as poss for you. After work tonight I'll give it thought and if no one has helped you by then you can follow my instructions tomorrw.  OK?

EDIT   dunno about ALMOST INSTANTLY   though. If you want pics from the video camera you'll need some free soft ware like MWSnap  (do you have it?)

  •  thanks to all for dental concern. Update is as I thought tooth cannot be saved so options are tooth removed , end of story  2nd option a bridge which can definitely be done but will only last 7 - 10 years and will put strain on support teeth cost roughly £200 and third an implant which may not be poss as it is a lower tooth with nerves leading to lip being an issue, cost £2000 and more. Anyway I have booked an appointment with my implant dentist for 24th Aug (I have 7 upper implants already) and will take his advice. Teeth have never been good but don't want to have dentures. My implant dentist (FOR HEATHER IT IS THE SOUTHSIDE PRIVATE PRACTISE)  is one of the best in the business so if he says he can do it I will go down that route again. Implants life by the way are 25 years plus and now can be done on an extract and immediate implant basis.
