Weekly Chat, Sunday July 25, 2010

Hi all:  First off, con't miss the last page of last week's chat for lovely photo of Alan's hibiscus and OG's very informative shots of the nest at LG, showing the perch under the nest where chick #1 likes to sit.

OG. Assume plumber on the list for next week.  So Boat of Garten actually has something to do with a real boat!  I thought it was some obscure Scottish vernacular-ish term that had nothing to do with a boat.  There was a nature program here last week about "preparing" an environment for some species that are living in an area that is expected to be threatened by higher ocean levels in the coming years. As with the Lapwings, the change has to be made gradually.

Cirrus.  A 12-mile hike! I probably burned a couple of hundred calories just thinking about it.

Was in the garden all day - as I type have the soaker hose going on the camellias, which I fed and which need deep watering about twice in the summer; they're putting out buds now.  Also fed the roses and plumeria. Found a volunteer duranta repens growing in one of the plumeria pots - I thought it was familiar but only recognized it today.    Sun came out around 11 and lovely cool evening now.

  • Hi, all. Enjoyed all of the chat and photos.

OG: I wanted to make sure that you know how much I've loved your photographs!!! Just wonderful. It sounds like you had a lovely trip. My Dad has enjoyed the pics, too. He said today, "Did that professional photographer woman put any more pictures on there?" :-))) He was amazed at the size of the osprey nest at LG. He watches the webcam with me sometimes in our afternoons, but he'd never seen the nest from the perspective in your photos.

Lindy: My Dad also enjoyed your last verse you posted. :-) Loved the crane and duck pics, especially the Cuban whistling duck. I want a pair of them to go with the ducks that AQ is sending to me. :-) I hope you and your husband fully recover soon. That dizziness is a bit of a strange symptom. Best to take it easy because you don't want to fall or faint where it could be dangerous, e.g. near the oven or driving in the car. Feel free to post more flower/garden pics. I'm not very talented at growing flowers, but I love to look at them. I like to watch the garden shows on our Home and Garden TV channel. You'd think I'd have a green thumb, because I've always loved nature, but not so. I couldn't even keep a cactus healthy. Good thing I never had children. :-0

Alicat: I hope you feel better, too.
TerryM: I hope you have a wonderful trip and that the weather cooperates with you!!! Hope you have someone trustworthy to take care of your lovely cats.
Alan: Beautiful hibiscus. I trust that Hamish is back to his ol' self today. My Dad says he hopes that "little blue dog is okay". :-)
Margobird: So glad that you're going to visit the farm again in the autumn. That's wonderful. I'm sure that Arnie the horse will be glad to see you -- as well as Thornton the sheep!!!
Annette: Have a lovely visit with your daughter! I hope Lightning is adapting to the absence of your husband. It must be so confusing for animals when someone disappears like that. Hope you got "your room" organized the way you want it. Nothing more satisfying than a good clear out and re-organization!
Cirrus: Nice to see you! Congrats on your long hike today. Wonderful!

All: Too hot and humid for hiking or any other outdoor activity here. We're under an extreme heat advisory.  I looked out the window today and several rabbits had taken shelter from the afternoon sun; they were all lined up underneath my car in the driveway -- looking miserable under there with their ears drooping sadly. Poor wee bunnies. The birds -- especially the cardinals -- have been resting on the deck rail and spreading their wings in the shade after bathing in the creek/burn. One of them decided to sing at 1:00 AM last night! Can't explain why except that she was probably glad that it had finally cooled off. LOL

    Everyone have a good Sunday.

  • Diane: Oh dear, poor rabbits in all that heat.  Poor you in all that heat.  Is this an unusually hot and humid year?  Have a nice Sunday.

  • Hi, Annette. We always have high humidity here in the summer and a few days of high heat. But it started really early this year and has been sustained, so people and animals are weary of it. The nearly daily storms are also not normal.

I've been watching some of the ads from your governor's race. Wow, is that getting u g l y out there! Glad they finally extended unemployment benefits. I'm not even going to watch Meet the Press tomorrow.

  • It was a wee bit cold this morning. 2 C at 6am (while I was tucked up in bed). I had to remove ice from car before driving to church. Very odd, not many people there ;-) I shall send some ice to to Diane & Annette. I hope Alicat & Lindybird you have recovered from whateveritwas. Did you catch that from me? Not that long ago I mentioned to Himself that I only get 1 cold a year. The gremlins heard me and decided to make me suffer. I still feel rather like a ragdoll without much stuffing. Bride1’s recipe party was a success. At least the others supplied tried & true recipes, unlike me. Well, she had already raided my recipe drawer. Hints for a successful marriage varied from the humorous to the wise to some from 1913. One of the latter - "Feed the brute". Thank you for the pics - Lindybird (cranes & ducks), OG (Scotland tour), Alan (hibiscus). I’ve a feeling I’ve forgotten some things I was going to reply. Sorry.

  • This one for OG.

OG hotel is located in the suburb of Klemzig on the corner of OG Road (to left) and North East Road (where I’m standing to take photo). Too bad about all the stobie pole, traffic lights and other street junk. OG Road and hence the OG Hotel were named after Osmond Gilles, SA’s first colonial treasurer. Also Glen Osmond, another suburb.

  • Gee, AQ, you're still feeling poorly, too! I hope you get your strength back and feel 100% soon. Appreciate the ice shipment. LOL I'll share with the pitiful bunnies. :-) Glad the recipe party was a success. I'm making my Dad cinnamon pumpkin bars with cream cheese icing right now. Feel better!

  • Diane - Thank you. Actually I feel fine as long as I sit quietly watching osps or reading. I'm off to make a nice warming steamed pudding for tea. That's to follow stir fry rice with whatever leftover vegies are in fridge. Ooh, cinnamon pumpkin bars, sound great, must Google for a recipe! How did we manage BG (before Google) !!!!!!!!!

  • AQ: Yum, steamed pudding. Here's my pumpkin bar recipe, but I don't know about Aussie measurements. I'm not a great cook in American. LOL

  • Normal 0 false false false

So, both OG and Djoan have important work to be done this coming week. Plumbers and new kitchens . Most sincerely wish you both good workmen (and the sort that tidy as they go and don’t leave a manic upheaval for the householder to sort out at the end).

’he'd never seen the nest from the perspective in your photos. ‘’  Me neither OG – wonderfully amazing

Could someone please tell me which page Lindy’s poem is on ?

Mmm, extreme heat Diane – well, I certainly couldn’t do that and I do trust you have air con??  Oooh, yes bunnies in fur coats in extreme heat – horrid. Does a Cardinal sound anything like a British Blackbird?

And there’s AQ getting rid of ice in the morning  !! May you be better real soon AQ

Off out now but I’ll drop by later to ‘’see’’ you all.

Do have a good day/evening everyone
