Daily Update (LG Nest) Thursday 22nd July

Hi everyone,  Thanks for all your posts and pics yesterday, they were great.  And thanks to all who posted clips of the goings on etc.

Annette, you said you may not make it on tonight because of personal committments,, hopefully we'll see you at some time during the course of today.

Its been a day of complete misery  insomuch as the weather situation.  A day of rain mostly although it has cleared up tonight.  Lots of comings and goings and they kept us all amused.

Happy viewing to our night shift and to the early morning bloggers as well.

I'll leave you with two pics taken round about 11.45pm last night on the next post.

  • It's all gone quiet and there is only one GEM on the nest, to the left.    No-one on the post, as they would cast a shadow.

  • Missed that Linda. Does that mean that No 1  finished the fish or took it away. I saw #2 fly away earlier when eldest was still eating.

  • Yes Lindybird just one on the left enjoying the early evening sunshine.  I'm about to start dinner preparations so something is bound to happen!

  • Empty nest now as last chick leaves.

  • Hi all - great to see the family enjoying some sun and wonderful that Titch has found his wings even though it was a bumpy start.

Has anyone else found that the birds in the garden are particularly greedy at the moment?  We have 2 seed feeders out with sunflower hearts and they are emptying both most days at the moment - quicker than in winter.  I suppose it's all the youngsters as we our normally healthy population of sparrows seems to have exploded.  They tend to hog one feeder while the goldfinches, bullfinches, chaffinches and the odd blue tit have the other until the sparrows have emptied their own and move on to the 2nd!  Maybe it will settle down soon if some of them move on - then again they may just decide they're on to too much of a good thing.  We'll have to put up some more sparrow terraces soon!

Sorry, don't know as I've been 'in and out' of here lately.

Trish 2   We have happily had a bit of a population explosion with our sparrows, too, which is great as they were dwindling a couple of years ago. When I fill up the feeder, they all cluster round right away, so I worry that they won't find food elsewhere or learn to forage.

  • Mmm, I have indeed Trish 2 BUT I have also discovered the reason why - WOOD PIGEONS  . Yikes , I could not understand why both my bird seed feeders were emptied on one day . (mopes brow). Then this morning I spotted a Wood Pigeon standing on a convenient branch which allowed him to just perch there and peck peck away . I have several Woody P's that visit my tree so multiply that up and no wonder both feeders ( a four port and a two port) were gobbled up in one day. I have now sawn that branch off !!!! I don't know  what the explanation for your seed feeder being depleted is but with mine it wasnt' the Robin, or baby Greenfinches or Blue and Great tits or Sparrows   - oh , no no no - Mr Woody P (s) is the culprit. My budget won't stand that  so I've been forced to take action.

Meantime I see an empty nest . Sigh. And wonder how long it's been like that.

  • Ah....Youngest is back and Eldest I guess answering from the nest post

  • Yes we have wood pigeons and collared doves but have our feeders in cages so they can only pick up what is dropped.  We learnt that a couple of years ago cos like you say they sat happily on a branch on the apple tree cramming in as much as they could!

We do have a ground tray too with a cage over that and it's funny to see them virtually standing on tip toe leaning in as far as they can to get to the edges of the tray.
