DAILY UPDATE ~ Loch Garten nest ~ Tuesday, 15 May 2018

So maybe Junior has an overactive prefrontal cortex nidopallium caudolaterale, interfering with an osprey male's specific natural instincts? Whatever the reason, he has gone back to his disappointing performance or lack thereof, showing up only to land on EJ's back in the morning and/or evening, NO FISH, leaving EJ to defend the nest on her own. She did look much better after yesterday's fish, doing some heavy lifting on the nest. And then the encroaching intruders, some of whom had dangled feet over the nest but left no indication of ring-ness. The Blue Darvic FN3 male was reported by RSPB FB as being perched on the camera tree for a bit while EJ yelled at him. Was he also on the cam post beside the nest? "Can you believe it?" says EJ. Plenty of disappointment all around; I think we'll have to live with it. Dream away, EJ, to better times ahead.

  • Morning all, well another day and episode on the LG nest opera! What do we think now, has she gone to get fish or have a bathe in the loch, maybe in one of the trees. He has a cheek that fellow, turning up now and again, and no fish again today. I think he is just a very young bird that really has no clue, and has lots to learn. It is a shame that EJ took to him and not one of the others. Oh well, we will await again and see what today brings.

  • It's not just GJ it seems.

Another rubbish morning osprey wise, these males don't seem to be in any hurry to fish, I'm sure things with soon change but they ain't in any hurry right now,

  • I have just had a thought. Do you think that our clever girl is indeed still trying to train George. We know that he is around, as told by the VC centre, maybe after her waiting 8 days until leaving the nest for the long spell on Sunday, she has decided to do the same again now, to get George to then go and bring back fish. Would she have an inner clock that she knows eggs will be hatching soon, and is trying to train George to bring fish more regularly, so that when chicks appear he is up to speed! Only guessing, she maybe has had enough and gone to fish herself. I am sure you clever people will tell me. Maybe wishful thinking!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • EJ's been off the nest for an hour now.

  • I do hope she is fishing for herself.

  • and still no EJ
