Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 1 April 2018

HAPPY NEW WEEK and HAPPY NEW MONTH!

I hope everyone has a wonderful week and a good spring (autumn for AQ).

The roofing crew arrived on Wednesday, instead of Friday, to do some emergency, initial work on my roof. While they worked up there, R.T. Hawk and his mate flew over them several times, and then the pair sat in their pine tree and watched the crew closely. The men didn't pay much attention to their wary observers.

Red-tailed hawks are known to be very curious birds, so maybe they just wanted to see what was happening. I actually wondered whether the hawks thought the men were "intruding" on my "nest," even trying to steal it from me. In their raptor minds, they probably consider my house to be my nest. If I had acted distressed or angry, I wonder whether they would have helped me "defend" it?! LOL

Take care, all.

  • We're back home again, after lovely morning with the children, but a wearisome journey this afternoon: due to   a) Friday traffic and    b)  the M6 motorway being totally closed because of breakdowns and accidents, resulting in a journey which should take less than 2 hours taking nearly 3 & a half hours!

We had to thread our way north via the "A" roads, and through the rush hour traffic. Got home and thawed out a pack of "Beef Stew for 2" from my home made stock of emergency supplies.....

  • Just got to bed! Quiet night on board, no children at breakfast at 7am!! Got off the ferry at about 1030, long drive to Thuro and arrived here at 2030. The best thing about driving through Germany was no speed limits on the autobahns so everything was moving very fast. It was fast but smooth and disciplined driving. Brilliant.

Extremely tired now so will say goodnight to all.

  • Sleep well, Heather - and enjoy your break.  Glad the journey was enjoyable, and you managed to get a quiet breakfast.

Lindy - welcome home.  I bet you'll enjoy sleeping in your own bed tonight.

The only problem with wanting to watch The Masters golf is that it's so late ... it's almost 11.30pm and some groups still have five holes to play.  Somehow I don't think I'll make it to the end.  At least it will be on BBC tomorrow and Sunday - no advertisements - yippee!!

  • I missed your post LINDY, too tired to read! It sounds as if were shattered after a nightmare journey.

PatO- Did you manage to see the end of the golf?

  • Good Morning, All.  As Pat says, nice to be back in our own bed.

Annette -Loved that photo!  Ospreys are in the News here as the TV are getting interested in their amazing migrations. The ones in Cumbria got another mention last night as both of a pair have returned. "There are only 30 breeding pairs in England & Wales" they reported.

Heather - Glad you arrived safely. Have a super time there.

We took the children to a local park yesterday morning, and had coffees in a newly opened cafe after enjoying the swings and slides. We were treated to many versions of "She's Coming Round the Mountain, When She Comes!" with enthusiastic choruses of "Yipee Yi Yi O!" from little Matthew!

  • Hope OG and family are alright after all having bad colds.

Everyone else, have a good weekend too: I'm off to put our outfits in the washing machine, after getting a lot of mud splattered on everything.

  • Heather - no, I didn't see the end 'live', but am watching the recording now with my breakfast.

  • Hi!  Quick update from us.  OH never really developed the full symptoms of the cold, has worked hard in the garden several times this week, including today.  J is recovered from the worst of it, but still not 100% well, although he has been out (daytime) a few times, and also did some garden work this morning.  I am still not at all well - would call it flu if I was of that persuasion.  A bit stronger today - went outside to admire my daffodils this morning - still very chesty and had to miss another hospital appointment in the week.  Now raining lightly - so OH has come in for soup for lunch.

Enjoying some interesting Osprey activity with new pairings and some regulars not yet in place!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Glad to see you posting, OG, but dismayed to see that you're still very under the weather. Get Well Soon! I also see that the stalwart EE is still toiling in the garden, determined no doubt, not to get behind schedule.

It's been raining a lot here, again: don't know where it's all going to go, as the ground is already soaked. I ordered some tiny petunia plug plants weeks ago, for April delivery and s**s law, of course, they arrived whilst we were away. They looked very dry so I've given them a good soak in water and then planted them out in a tray but some of them are so stressed they've lost their leaves, doubt if I'll get even a half of the dozen originally delivered. Grr!

Forgot to say, when we arrived back yesterday tired from babysitting and the bad journey, I noticed straight away that we had a message on the Answering machine. When I pressed "play" we were greeted with the creaking voice of Awful Cousin, who wanted to joyfully inform us of her intended visit next September!  She mentioned the dates: she will be here for ten long days, but thankfully after only five of them, we shall be away on our holiday......

I can just picture the expressions of joy on both of your faces as you listened to her dulcet tones!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
