It is the 1st September and the osprey season is all but over. It has gone very quickly. It was a very sad year for Loch Garten. Everything was going very well until Odin disappeared on 18th May. This led to the loss of the chicks. Then on July 14 EJ disappeared too. Her fate is unknown. So there is great uncertainty for next year as it is not known quite what is expected.
Dyfi has been very successful this year with three very healthy juveniles already on the way south.
Glaslyn has got three male juveniles all ready to migrate. Also birds hatched in 2014 (Blue 9C) and 2015 (Blue W0) were spotted back in Britain.
Bassenthwaite has three fledged chicks this year.
Manton Bay had one of its chicks disappear early and it is not clear if it migrated or not.
Kielder has done well with 9 chicks flying south. Two of these are carrying GSM transmitters.
Loch of the Lowes has two juveniles this year.
The high point of the year for me was the translocation of eight young ospreys to Poole harbour.

Oh absolutely Ann, how I managed to forget all that I really have no idea!
Birdie's DU Summaries 2018 https://www.imagicat.com/
I think that this is becoming a monumental mix up but what is new.
Sheila here the bird you were referring to. See White/black SY
The 15 year old female that caused excitement in 2013 was Ochre ZT
Mary C posted a link, on the Loch Arkaig FB page she set up, of a wonderful BBC Radio programme which features Roy Dennis. It also contains clips of World on the Move and Logie's migration (2008 south and 2009 northward) which was the programme that drew me into ospreys in the first place. It is brilliant.
A Life With ..., Series 5 Episode 3 of 3 - December 2009 Writer and naturalist Paul Evans goes to the Highlands of Scotland to meet Roy Dennis OBE, statesman of British conservation, who has spent a life with ospreys - the iconic fish hawks which are slowly returning to Britain. Paul asks Roy what other creatures he would like to see back in the British countryside.
And further links of programmes are shown on the page to osprey
Thanks for the information Sheila. I meant to mention (but think I forgot) an episode of In our Time on BBC radio four on 6 July 2017 which was about bird migration. The programme is in the show archive if you want to listen to it. There was something strangely satisfying in hearing three experts in the field saying "we just don't know" about so much of bird migration. Ian
Time is running the clock down around 30/31 day hopefully to be for it starts again this seasson

ONE FOR YOUR DIARY
On Tuesday 10 November - Channel 5 - 20:00 (8:00 PM)
Loch Lomond a year in the Wild 1 of 4 "SPRING"
This is filmed on my doorstep stretching the National Park from Loch Lomond over the Trossachs.
There is a charming story about a pair of ospreys. After the female returns from Africa her partner is not there - tired of waiting - he's gone fishing.
I have a feeling as the series progresses this may be the insight into the short life of The Trossachs juvenile LONAIG (Dont want to reveal too much).
Also included in the episode one you will see the male Black Grouse strutting and fighting, Mountain hares shedding their white winter fur and the female red deer returning from the high mountainside to calve.
