It is the 1st September and the osprey season is all but over. It has gone very quickly. It was a very sad year for Loch Garten. Everything was going very well until Odin disappeared on 18th May. This led to the loss of the chicks. Then on July 14 EJ disappeared too. Her fate is unknown. So there is great uncertainty for next year as it is not known quite what is expected.
Dyfi has been very successful this year with three very healthy juveniles already on the way south.
Glaslyn has got three male juveniles all ready to migrate. Also birds hatched in 2014 (Blue 9C) and 2015 (Blue W0) were spotted back in Britain.
Bassenthwaite has three fledged chicks this year.
Manton Bay had one of its chicks disappear early and it is not clear if it migrated or not.
Kielder has done well with 9 chicks flying south. Two of these are carrying GSM transmitters.
Loch of the Lowes has two juveniles this year.
The high point of the year for me was the translocation of eight young ospreys to Poole harbour.

Thanks Tiger - you forgot to mention the success of Clarach! I do agree that LG has, and EJ disappearance in particular, has put a damper on the season for a lot of followers. We can but hope she is safe and well and ready to fight another season next year.
It's a shame that Clarach's third chick was weak when it hatched - I thought she and her mate stood a good chance of raising all three had it been OK.
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Thanks for the new thread and the summary, Tiger. Fingers crossed for the safe return of all those breeding pairs, with a few miracles as well. I would be truly amazed and completely thrilled to see Odin and EJ next spring.
Kind regards, Ann
Ian S said:Hi, this is my first post to this thread, I was pointed in your direction by the Loch Arkaig thread. I have a question which I posted to the LA thread which I have copied below & would be grateful for any thoughts on "I think the weather forecast for much of Scotland is pretty dire for most of the weekend (what's new I hear you ask). I believe that wider weather patterns can have an impact on the date of migration but couldn't start to guess whether locally poor weather will encourage Lachie to go or stay. Apologies if there is a dedicated thread for this discussion, if there is can someone point me to it? Thanks in advance", Ian
Welcome to the thread. This is a general discussion thread for all things osprey that do not fit in other threads.
You are right that young ospreys usually start their migration when the weather is benign although I have seen exceptions.
One map which helps us predict migration is the World Wind Map This gives an idea when the winds will be favourable.

Rather strong winds this morning. I wonder how this will affect migrating ospreys See World wind map
