DAILY UPDATE ~ Loch Garten nest ~ Wednesday, 24 May 2017

It still has been difficult watching, as EJ spent less time on the nest yesterday, and we did not see her with fish. Fewer intruders, yet not completely gone. Cromarty has not been seen but another male Blue FC5 was spotted by LG. Welcome to the new posters who have been lurking. We are, in fact, a wonderful group, if I may say so myself. Morning all

Sorry, CATHY - I'm too busy overflowing with angst to be polite ;)  Good morning to you! :)

  • Hi everyone and welcome to all the new posters.

Thanks for all the updates and captures of EJ yesterday and this morning so far.  Sadly no Odin as yet but maybe today?  I hope so.

  • Good morning from a grey but bright Scotland. Thank you CC for starting another sad day with no news of dear Odin and fewer sightings of EJ. Welcome to Jan and Cathy and other newbies. Like others I hope you stay around.

Is there any news on the blue ringed bird, other than the number. I guess it's another youngster trying his luck. With no further sightings of PP7 I wonder whether Odin and he are still striving for the top dog position.

One uplifting event y'day was the sighting of a nest in a pylon, with a light moving object spotted at the top of it. I can only assume it was mum with eggs or young chicks. There was a brief sughting of a brown bird flying near by - Dad?  It was very distant even with bins, which I could watch while having a pint!

I still have my fingers crossed for the return of dear Odin.

Heading for a few days to Mull, but hope to keep in touch.

  • Landing by male, looks like the usual unringed but not certain.

  • I thought I could see a blue ring. ?

  • Morning all. Oh Scylla, you are having serious techie problems by the sound of things. You have worked miracles to post at all. So, 2 brief visits to the nest so far. We will see what the rest of the day brings. Shiela have a great visit to Mull. I had a super birding trip there last year. What a beautiful place.

  • Yes, I agree with Cathy. Blue ring rleft leg, BTO on right. Possibles are PP7 and FC5, or another!

  • Sheila, I will be on Mull in less than three weeks ... can't wait!  My spiritual home, I know it so well.  Looking forward to seeing the sea eagles again, as well as the seals and otters.  And everything else.  Hoping to get to Staffa this year.  I will also visit Loch of the Lowes on my way ...

I am so sad about events at LG.  I am also sad about some of the reactions here.  This is my second season as an 'ospreyholic'.  We are so privileged to be able to watch the ospreys going about their lives - and this covers both happy and sad events.  This is a wonderful forum, and we are all entitled to our own opinion on such matters as intervention.  Sharing those opinions is normal and healthy - but personal criticism is not.  I'm happy to see things seem to have settled down.  For the record, I of course would have preferred the chicks to live and fledge - but in the event I accept the decision of the RSPB who care for the welfare of the birds and would have consulted and agonised over their decision.  I admire the way they have handled this difficult, unexpected and fast-moving situation, and kept us fully up to date.  We should be supporting them in what must feel like a 'no win situation'.  Keep up that wonderful work!

  • EJ on the nest just now

edit, she has flown as I was posting
