The 2017 season is almost upon us and my first thoughts are of 03(97) / Mr Rutland as he was usually the first back on or around the 17th March and heralded the start of the season.

Sadly 03(97) is no longer with us but it is nice to think of him and smile knowing his legacy will live on as we now eagerly await the safe return of all the regulars and also new returnees.
A safe journey to all.
Vespa, Thanks, Lovely song by the children at the end in the video, though I couldn't understand a word!
Kind regards, Ann
One year old returns
That's fantastic news Alan!

How amazing. Not many one yr olds return, I believe. Folk used to think they didn't return at two and that had long been disproven!

From Roy Dennis
The ospreys’ life along the tropical shores of West Africa appears idyllic. One sometimes wonders why they bother to return to cold, snowy Scotland but the call of home is very strong. Most juveniles are believed to spend their first summer in Africa south of the Sahara, and our Guinea recovery supports that view. In summer 1997, though, a Scottish colour-ringed osprey was seen at Rutland Water, having returned when it was just one year old. In 2003 a translocated female from Rutland Water that had wintered in Portugal also returned to England at the same age. Most recoveries, however, show that two years is the normal age of return to Europe.

This is a bit vague, as to where the sighting was at RW, so I post it here rather than the MB thread

A very successful season at Rutland Mike.
A Rutland female was seen at the Dyfi nest today - she was ringed Blue 3J and is a 2013 bird.
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
