RUTLAND OSPREY PROJECT - 2017

The 2017 season is almost upon us and my first thoughts are of 03(97) / Mr Rutland as he was usually the first back on or around the 17th March and heralded the start of the season.

Sadly 03(97) is no longer with us but it is nice to think of him and smile knowing his legacy will live on as we now eagerly await the safe return of all the regulars and also new returnees.

A safe journey to all.

  • Hello all. I might be wrong but I read a lot into the statements. Firstly to have 7 nesting pairs that they are the same 7 nesting pairs from last year. 01(09) and 5N(04), 33(11) and Maya, 11(10) and 25(10) we know for sure. 28(10) and 30(05) are also confirmed so lets assume that they are with their respective mates 2F(12) and 32(11). I have not seen any of the other two previous breeding pairs mention but I assume (again) that they are still 06(09)/00(09) and 03(09)/unringed female. a lot of assumption I know.

However, secondly, they say 20 birds have returned - I only know of 20 possible birds from last year (although a couple are speculative). So I read that as all of our birds have returned - including all of the previous breeding birds.

That leaves the six unattached males as 51(11) 30(10) and 1J(13) for sure and a speculative 8F(12) 1K(13 and 4K(13). I think 8F and 4K were confirmed somewhere last year but 1k was a 2015 sighting I think.

They have confirmed no 2014 birds and S6 is the first of 2015.

Unless there are unreported 'imports' of course.

My guess - large pinch of salt needed.

  • Thanks David for all your thoughts/info.  I'm still churning it over and IMO a pretty good guess:-)

  • Hi David, I agree with your thoughts. I don't think they ever named the breeding pairs in 2016 but stated they were the same as in 2015 which were those you list above, so can only assume your above info is correct for 2017 (unless a new female has replaced a non returning bird) .

I'm not sure if 1J, 8F, 1K or 4K were ever confirmed in 2016 & I only have 1K as being reported from Belgium in 2015 but I suspect you're probably correct in thinking these are this years birds or an additional 2013 male has returned.

  • Thanks Karen for your reply.

It is a shame that Rutland don't give out information of all their birds any longer.   I am sure they use to always do a round up blog at the end of the season confirming all the details, but not seen one for a few seasons now.   It made it so much easier to know which juveniles came from which Site.

I wonder why they have stopped doing these round up blogs now!

  • Mary. I am told that there WILL be an end of season roundup. How much detail that will contain is yet to be seen.

  • Thanks Mike, but as you say what it contains is the million dollar question :-)

  • I can never understand why everything is so much a secret

  • MARY, Agree it is such a shame we no longer get any info and none of us understand why not TEMPO! but lets hope, as MIKE says that we get something at the end of the season :-)

But be prepared as they may not!  I've been giving this more thought and have come to the conclusion that they just like to tease us LOL
