Hi Folks
I noticed on the Osprey sightings thread an Osprey had been seen at Weir Wood reservoir in Sussex the last time being yesterday at 09.00 so I took a drive across in the hope it was still around. I had only been there down at the west end of the reservoir for about 10 minutes when it appeared suddenly from the west and was clearly on the look out for fish, it done a couple of circuits but then drifted east as the water was a bit choppy due to the breeze. Heres some of the better of the shots I managed to fire off as it moved away, I stayed for a further hour but I guess it had caught a fish so would be perched up somewhere eating it.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

The last time I did see one there a couple of weeks back it too appeared from the West end and then sat on a dead tree right on the point near the platform.

Clare: Thank you very much it was the shortest wait I have had for an Osprey 10 minutes later and I would have missed it.
Mike: It nearly caught me out coming from the West all the previous ones I have seen at Weir Wood have always come from the east. I am wondering if it is roosting down at the west end in the biggest tree over looking the water?
Would make sense Shane. If it went East and caught it is most likely feeding in Admirals Wood unless it has swung round behind you out of sight and gone to it's roosting tree.
For those who don't know this area once the bird has left the 'bay' area it is impossible to see where it goes from Shane's position due to the heavily wooded nature and terrain.
I wonder if this fairly late fishing was due to the heavy mist which often hangs in the valley until the sun gets up enough to burn it off and thus for the bird to see any prey?
Shucks - I'm going to miss it again! There's no way I can get there today, and the rest of the week doesn't look a lot better. But your photographs are great, Shane - thanks.
