Weekly Chat Sunday July 11th

  • Evening all: Sun came out at 11:20 a.m. today - very exciting. So rushed out into garden to water, etc., etc. tidy up roses and all that.

Heather: I know I've probably missed you but hope you get all that food to France and that everyone enjoys it. Don't work too hard.

BrendaH:  Wonder what it is that makes some siblings so unhappy with each other - jealousy?

George: Funny how things turn out, but good in your case - "do unto others...." is a good philosophy.

OG: More lovely pix!  Whoopie pies?! Sounds like Whoopie cushions, which you sit on and then they make a rude noise. Will have to Google too.  I haven't heard about them here at all - we're still into cupcakes.  I'm sure Lightning will sneak into the bedrooms just to throw up on the clean carpeting at the first opportunity. Remember The Water Babies, but not Mrs. Do, etc...

Lindybird: Tell your OH there are worse things to be spending your time with.  My OH's only "real" vice is history books, while the guy across the road is really into off-road racing and he spends day after day, morning to night, in his garage puttering with his toys.

AQ:  I'm not sure what the Euro rules are re transporting food. Here you have to declare fruit, veggies if you go across state lines because California's economy is so highly dependent on agriculture.  Aha - well, when OH and I  were talking about me possibly going on this UK trip and then on to Holland or somewhere I said very firmly that I didn't want to spend all my time in cathedrals and churchs and castles. I like them, but not all day, every day.  On the other hand, he doesn't like guided tours. Maybe you and I should go on a pottering-about trip.  Wonder what the purpose of such a red face is on those ducks (are they constantly embarrassed?)  :-)

The sun is over the yardarm here (whatever that means), so I think I shall follow Lindybird's example and pour a glass of wine. Trying to lose weight, so just a little one.

Thanks to all good friends for lovely and thoughtful posts - take care.  Off to find poetry page.

  • OK. I give up. Where's poetry page?

AQ: I found #2 worked very well around the office (though I usually was worried!). And OH is a fine example of #3!

  • Never heard of Whoopie pies, so Googled. Now I’m hungry LOL. This recipe adds to my dilemma - Bride1 is having a Shower Tea (for the oldies). We are to bring a recipe and one ingredient to stock her pantry. Now my grizzle is that she has already gone through my recipe drawer, so what recipe can I give her? As a joke I have been thinking of one of those old recipes that starts "Take a dozen eggs - - ". So far I have found one that has 9 eggs only. A friend has sent me a tomato soup cake (!!!!) recipe. Hm, a whoopie pie recipe would be very trendy. Need to translate ingredients - in Aussieland 'purpose flour' is known as plain flour.

These are Australian wood ducks (Chenonetta jubata) I saw in the park yesterday. Also known as maned ducks as the male has a small dark mane. They rarely swim, prefer walking.

  • AQ: Lovely ducks - so exquisitely marked.   There must a suitable recipe in those library archives - some pioneer recipe from the old days??

  • AQ: I just happened upon this forum and thought it was such a coincidence. A woman posted who listed her location as: "buried under a pile of books somewhere in Adelaide, South Australia". http://chocolateandzucchini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3187&sid=2

She is posting about having just discovered Whoopie Pies. She mentions making Carrot Cake Whoopie Pies (hey, OG!) with Honeyed Cream Cheese Filling, also Gingerbread Whoopie Pies and Spiced Pistachio Whoopie Pies with Rosewater Filling.

We have a large Amish community here in my area, and I'm very familiar with Whoopie Pies. On Sunday mornings, I can hear (and watch) the horses clippity clopping down the highway at the end of my lane, pulling the Amish buggies (carriages).

I'm headed for bed. I'll catch up with everyone tomorrow. Everyone have a nice Tuesday.

I know you are asleep right now, hope you see this later:

Click Forums on yellow band at top of this page.  Click Community Central title.  Go down page; find and click Poetry Corner at bottom left of list.  The thread you want is Osprey Poems, which starts with Lindy's masterpiece!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • aquilareen love the pics of all the ducks.

    Margobird

  • Good morning original goldfinch such a lovely photo of the red squirrel.

    Margobird

  • Morning, All:   Dry but cloudy here again. We had a good day out yesterday which I'll relate later, hopefully with some pics.

Thanks to AQ  for lovely duck pics etc.  You are always entertaining, AQ!

dibnlib:  See you found Community Central in the end.  There are all sorts of interesting things on there, some of which I contributed to last winter, but no time now as busy watching Ospreys.   ; - )    I remember Jonathan Livingston Seagull - have a copy on the bookshelf behind me now!

Now, OG   Don't start describing anything of mine as a masterpiece or I shall have to go knock on the door of the Tate & ask to be exhibited    ; - ))

    - speaking of which, have so much enjoyed your pics lately - are there any more? (lovely squirrel). Back to your comment the other day about the heuchera in my pic of the water spout -  No, its not coming out when I finish the project, in fact there is a much  bigger one just to the left of the pic which got left out. Husband had some sort of crazy idea that I would just put in the water feature bit with nothing around it, which wasn't my idea at all.  I intend to 'pinch' yet more of his precious lawn and put in more plants and some slate chips etc  to finish it.  Will post another pic one day when its finished.  We did Charles Kingsley in school so it's a long time a go now, but hazily remember that.

Lots to do today & have to go out in middle of day, too, so off I go to start on it all....

  • ps Morning, margobird!
