Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey Topics), 5 June 2016

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

Last week's Chat thread is here.

No time for a post or replies from me, folks. Really, really busy. I'm sending good wishes to all. Heather: I hope your daughter is improving.

Everyone have a wonderful week!

  • Yas: Sorry 'bout that, but a read back of the Weekly Chat site over the last couple of years would seem to reveal that families, pets, gardening, household chores, physical ailments (both serious and minor) and other domestic dilemmas tend to dominate. The RSPB site has all kinds of threads devoted to birds (no surprise there - after all it is the RSPB) but also to other animals. It's not that we don't appreciate wildlife on this particular thread, but folks who post on more specific threads don't want to hear about how many times our dogs threw up or if the fridge broke or the grandkids came to visit, etc., which is why we started this thread (and to keep up with each other after the birds migrated to Africa). Anyway, really sorry the format doesn't work for you.

  • LINDY   How very difficult for you. I do hope you are both happy with your decision.  Off for a swim and coffee this morning.

Can't remember if I told you that Benson took a walk on the railway line after a new fence was erected. OH info'd network rail  and yesterday they let us know they have repaired it. We will check it out tomorrow when there are two of us walking.

  • Good Morning, All.

Yas - I'm so sorry, but Annette is quite right and you do seem to be on the wrong thread: this thread "Weekly Chat" was started specifically because a lot of us (who also incidentally, follow the ospreys both at LG and on other nests) were chatting about things unrelated to birds and wildlife, and annoying others who wanted to keep it to bird talk and photos only!!  There are other places on the RSPB Site where you can do what you are trying to do - The RSPB Community threads have plenty of people who are enthusiastically posting every day on threads about the things you want to include.  Hope you can find them. :-)

And good luck to you and your wonderful sounding OH.

  • Thank you all for your support over our difficult time at present. I won't pretend that it's not been really stressful for both of us over the last few months. We don't like to quit over an animal and she has become a big part of our lives:  my OH is strongly of the opinion that Bonnie is very headstrong and possibly completely untrainable, unless much cruelty was used, which of course would not be on the cards. I think that as regards the dog herself, she would be much happier in a place where there were other dogs to occupy her daytime hours.  We live in a small house with a small garden although there is countryside around us, which means lots of long walks off the lead. But no way can we contemplate what would be ideal, which would be to get another dog to keep her company!  We deliberately chose a smaller breed than our usual kind of dog, thinking about ourselves going into old age. I knew a puppy would be hard work, but very ironically, we got a puppy because we wanted to train her to be a well behaved dog.

Incidentally, years ago when I first met my dear Friend, she and her OH had a bolshie badly behaved Beagle, who filled me with horror - he would hardly ever do anything asked of him, dug holes in their garden, and escaped regularly!!  EDIT-  I once "babysat" him for the day and he ran straight through our French Windows, breaking the glass, because he saw a Blackbird! (No double glazing in those days) He was pronounced "untrainable" at the time: apparently they are a difficult breed.

  • Good morning all

    Quite cool here but dry.

OG- He took the stick with him and then left it in the car! All was, well, however. The visit was to Forestry Commission site. OH was totally amazed that modern foresters use a computer driven machine that fells and trims the trees for them. The machine is made in Finland, seemingly.

ANNETTE- good luck with grandson getting a vehicle - mine has just bought another old banger to do up. He is still enjoying driving the first one....

LINDY- hugs from here. I can well imagine the agony this upcoming decision is causing you and your OH.

DIBNLIB- enjoy your swim. Glad that the fence is repaired, must have given you a fright when Benson decided to investigate the railway line.

Back later, we need a few house and garden items which require using the car. OH is in a bossy mood this morning so I'd better get moving. I've already been ticked off for leaving the iron in an 'unsafe' place :-(  He was right, though, it was silly!

  • Good morning – very slightly cooler with high humidity but no rain; OH so pleased to have painted fence yesterday, that he is going to paint the shed later today!  We slept under empty duvet cover last night – much more comfortable!

Yas – this thread does exactly “what it says on the tin” – each week Diane (usually) sets it going with the title “Weekly Chat (non-Osprey topics)”, and as others have explained this arose from avoiding personal chat and news-sharing annoying others on original Osprey pages.  The RSPB graciously allowed us this chat thread, within the Osprey Forum, knowing that it was a shared love of wildlife (Ospreys in particular) which brought us together; it comes under the surveillance of their Moderators just as any other thread in any forum within the Community Section of the website.  Within the Chat, we share our hopes and fears, joys and disappointments and offer support to one another – I personally can testify to this.  Sorry to see that you feel you do not fit here, but I hope you will continue to enjoy posting on the Wildlife Forum.

Dibnlib – glad Benson did not come to harm on the railway line; I hope the fence repair is effective.

Linda – it sounds as if you are nearer a decision over Bonnie, and able to rid yourselves of the stress and tension she is causing.  Thinking of you.

Heather – so, maybe the “use” of the stick was just to reassure you that OH was taking care!  Pleased he was alright.  Those felling machines used in forestry these days are fantastic – but I understand there are places where horses are still used to remove hand-felled timber in hard-to-reach places.  I hope everything you need to buy using the car is easily found at all the right places!

Well, a slow start this morning, so must get on with necessaries!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Good Morning Everyone. Very light rain here this morning. We had plenty of thunder and lightning yesterday evening, but no rain. There was flooding not far far from us though.
I don't think I can hope to catch up with all your posts, although I have spent this morning catching up. So thanks for all your news.

Linda, Thinking of you while you make your decision about Bonnie. A very difficult time for you both. I know you have put so much love, time and energy into your relationship with Bonnie.
Son was warned that Penny ( a beagle) would be hard to train, but she really is extremely well behaved and sociable. They did take her to training lessons from a very early age.  She seems to recognise us still, probably our voices,  when we are on Face Time and wags her tail and yaps to us.

Dibnlib, Pleased that the railway fence has been repaired. A very dangerous and worrying time for you, when Benson wandered onto the the track.

Sorry Yas, that you have decided to leave, but Annette and Linda have fully explained the point of this page. There are so many threads on the rest of the RSPB site, which seem to suit what you are looking for.

Heather, Sorry, but did laugh about your OH being in a bossy mood and your negligence with the iron.

The sun is coming out now. Should I chance hanging out the washing :-))

  • We cross posted, OG. An excellent explanation of ' Our Page '.

  • Good morning, Brenda.  I trust you are feeling better today.  Sun is also pushing its rays through the white clouds here, so should see blue sky soon.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Not full of energy yet, OG, but I am eating now, thank you. I told daughter that I am not going up to London again, too soon. LOL
