Weekly Chat Sunday July 4 2010

Hallo all:   I put up the painters' tape showing the dimensions of the various flat-screen tellys (tellies?) we're looking at and now we're thinking maybe we don't need a really big one.

Auntie: Great that you had a lovely day at Pohtiolampi; how fun to see ospreys in action.

OG: I say put Loch Garten for sure on your trip north!  We expect a full report!  OMG: That python/gator photo was fascinatingly gross.  Talk about his eyes being bigger than his belly!!  Eeeeuw!  Why did I think orchids were a hot-weather plant....    Well - if you go to Caerlaverock, hope you enjoy it. Are "kissing gates" the same as stiles?  All I can remember is "Would you rather run a mile, jump a stile, or eat a pancake in a field?"  Oh dear. Talk about regressing......  Thanks for update on Big Rig Steve; haven't been on the computer all day. Had earnest discussion with vines, who have promised to behave, and gave some encouragement to the tomatoes, which are being a bit shy.  Currently, our ailing Navel Orange tree is getting a lot of TLC in the form of deep watering followed by nutritional snack that will make it feel better (and we hope, look and and taste  better).

AQ: Universal laws transcend borders. :-)

It's July 4 - Independence Day - tomorrow; will start off the day shortly after 6 a.m.(!)  with live Wimbledon coverage (on our normal channel - just checked!), then will putter about before picking up daughter in late afternoon to go to Mission Santa Ynez, where we'll watch July 4 fireworks display.  OH not thrilled with fireworks, so he'll stay home and keep Lightning company (she doesn't like them either).

In the meantime, off to check on osprey cams.

  • OG - I’ve probably missed you. But I am thinking of you and your family and sending positive thoughts. Thanks for the bird pics, especially the synchronised swimmer swans.

Lindybird - Some years ago I knew a feisty old lady who claimed she sprayed her spider webs with Xmas glitter. She also said she went to department stores in extreme weather - preferring to use their air-conditioning than hers.

Annette - It is a strange world. I read in this morn’s paper a report that a $2 billion pulp mill is to be built at . . . wait for it . . .Penola !!!! They will harvest the pinus radiata & blue gum eucalyptus, sending the pulp mainly to China. We in SA know all about Lance A. He was invited (for an undisclosed payment) to take part in the Tour Downunder. Crowds flocked to see him. Much anguish from top pollies if he really does retire after Tour de France, as they want him back here again. BTW Cadel Evans is our great hope. I believe he has come second previously. I only started watching last year, as I didn’t realize there was all that magnificent scenery on display. Loved Brussels and its old buildings.

Alan - Thanks for the cheery hollyhocks. I still love old-fashioned flowers the best. The most prolific colour in my garden now is from the soursobs (Oxalis), a weed. OK, I should be out there weeding. Maybe later, if it warms up. It was hard to emerge from my warm cocoon this morn. Sixth night with min temp below 5 C, currently (just gone 8 am) 6 C.

  • A few more Universal Laws

Law of Physical Surfaces - The chances of an open-faced jelly sandwich landing face down on a floor covering are directly correlated to the newness and cost of the carpet/rug.

Law of the Bath - When the body is fully immersed in water, the telephone rings.

Law of Random Numbers - If you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal and someone always answers.

  • Hi AQ:  Don't worry about the oxalis.  I have the most beautiful display of it each winter, and when it dies down it makes a very good mulch to conserve water in the garden it has made itself at home in!  ;-)

    Smiles, Jan.

  • Hi Wattle.  Thanks, I don't need much of an excuse to leave them. LOL. And now I'm off to have coffee with a friend. Library will be lucky to see me this week!!!!!

  • Hi, all. Really tired and headed for bed. Will catch up with everyone soon. OG, I've probably missed you, but my thoughts are with you. Everyone have a great Tuesday!!!

Diane: So funny! Read your post above and thought "Oh, I've already posted that I'm really tired and going to bed" (Had just done that on the LG Daily and LOTL threadsl)

Anyway, this is official: I'm really tired and headed for bed. Will also catch up with everyone soon.  Everyone have a great Tuesday!  :-)))

  • Good morning (or whatever you wish) to all. Thanks for entertaining chat, lovely pics etc. I went to see "Guys and Dolls" in an open-air theatre last Sunday and it was good entertainment. It took me about hour and a half to drive there (and the same back) and after the show I went to see my godson's new apartment and had a evening coffee there. So I was back home somewhere near 1am, and yesterday was a hot day (yes Annette;) ) here nearly 30C and was way too much outdoors without a hat, so was a bit "heavy headed" yesterday, hence didn't have energy to chat here. Can't reply all the posts but appreciate them all!!!

Jeanette, thanks for your report from LG, how I wish I could go but I live bit too far away LOL

Alan, great shot of Hamish, that red collar really becomes him

Lindybird, loved that Dust Bunnies poem (saved it) You really have a great talent

OG, love your pictures always, and think to get that Godwit photo sent to Iceland, how exciting!

Diane, hope you are not doing too much housework, dustbunnies may become endangered species there LOL

Have a nice day each and everybody!

  • Just to say, I've been taking part in an interesting thread in the main forum, started by a sculptor who has been commissioned to produce a bronze falcon.

    http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/forums/t/18643.aspx

This is the link he gave to his website. Now he knows the difference between hawks and falcons, I don't think he should have too much difficulty,as he has previously sculpted ospreys, owls and ducks.

  • Morning All:   Thanks for that interesting reference above, SueC.    Would love to know how he gets on with the project.

Not very sunny here today, but dry.  Wind has died down which we have had for a few days.

Hope OG  enjoys her break away, suppose we have missed her now & she is on her way. Must go & do stuff, will come back on here later....

    Have a good Tuesday, All.

  • Morning ALL. Very sunny here again. The garden desperately needs some rain.

Rather tired this morning, after what seems to have been a continuous daily ritual of driving on long journeys. We have asked our daughter to let us cancel our planned dinner with her this evening. We both feel we need at least a day in our own home to just relax. OH says he has withdrawal symptoms this morning and feels we should be dashing somewhere.

I must catch up with all your chat and will 'speak later'.
