Weekly Chat Sunday July 4 2010

Hallo all:   I put up the painters' tape showing the dimensions of the various flat-screen tellys (tellies?) we're looking at and now we're thinking maybe we don't need a really big one.

Auntie: Great that you had a lovely day at Pohtiolampi; how fun to see ospreys in action.

OG: I say put Loch Garten for sure on your trip north!  We expect a full report!  OMG: That python/gator photo was fascinatingly gross.  Talk about his eyes being bigger than his belly!!  Eeeeuw!  Why did I think orchids were a hot-weather plant....    Well - if you go to Caerlaverock, hope you enjoy it. Are "kissing gates" the same as stiles?  All I can remember is "Would you rather run a mile, jump a stile, or eat a pancake in a field?"  Oh dear. Talk about regressing......  Thanks for update on Big Rig Steve; haven't been on the computer all day. Had earnest discussion with vines, who have promised to behave, and gave some encouragement to the tomatoes, which are being a bit shy.  Currently, our ailing Navel Orange tree is getting a lot of TLC in the form of deep watering followed by nutritional snack that will make it feel better (and we hope, look and and taste  better).

AQ: Universal laws transcend borders. :-)

It's July 4 - Independence Day - tomorrow; will start off the day shortly after 6 a.m.(!)  with live Wimbledon coverage (on our normal channel - just checked!), then will putter about before picking up daughter in late afternoon to go to Mission Santa Ynez, where we'll watch July 4 fireworks display.  OH not thrilled with fireworks, so he'll stay home and keep Lightning company (she doesn't like them either).

In the meantime, off to check on osprey cams.

  • Sudden squally shower from the south.

Gives me an excuse for another photo - this is the pigeon who mislaid his tail:

Now returned to dry, bright and breezy!!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • original goldfinch lovely photo of a Linnet and how exciting that Caerlaverock will use your photo in the report document for Iceland.  Lovely that they are going to let you know what they find out.

I get a fair number of wood pigeons in my garden up to 15 sometimes.  I put a bowl of peanuts out for them away from the main feeding area and they tend to eat from that rather than hoovering everything else up.

  • Good afternoon all - breezy and fresher today, with some sunshine.

OG - lovely photographs ... I particularly like the swans synchronised swimming!

Lindybird - brilliant dust bunnies poem. I like your water feature ... I have one that pours water from a teracotta jug into three other little bowls ... its surrounded by pots & tubs of plants, and the birds love it. Lovely Monday smile :-)

Alan - how handsome Hamish is ... a real poser!

Thanks to all for chat/links etc

    Take care

  • Hollyhocks pic just taken in the garden:

  • Alan - great picture of a lovely towering Hollyhock - started revealing from the top and thought it would never end!  Had to reduce to 50% to see it all.

Young Blue Tit doing what young Blue Tits do:

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Alan as original goldfinch has said I wondered just bit this was going to be but what a wonderful colour.

  • Hiya all, dont post on here very often but always read the blogs and just had to comment on the pics.  What a talented bunch of photographers and poets we have :o)

Alan:  Your dog Hamish is absolutely gorgeous and the hollyhock is huge, well done you :o)

Original Goldfinch: your photographs are just amazing, love the wee bluetit hanging upside down :o)

    Thanks to you all :o)

  • Morning all:

AQ: Thanks for those names; I've bookmarked the link and will check 'em out. You'd be surprised how many "street views" they have of rural OZ on Google Earth; it's about as close as I'll get - brilliant.  Better catch up on your sleep if you're following the Tour de France.

OG: Oh good, It's not just me who'd often rather stay home. I like doing thing where there are no crowds for the most part.   Those four rings on the Roadrunner's legs seem a bit like overkill. How did you get those swans to pose so perfectly?  :-)    Will the pigeon's tail grow back?  (sorry, clueless here as usual!)  Wonder how that affects navigation, though obviously still well able to make it to the feeder.

SueC: Thanks for that link. Interesting to know how they track them - very small devices, but clever.

Lindybird: Thanks for Monday smile. A children, eh? So that's what they call them.

BrendaH. New  house visits are exciting - I'm sure you made all the right noises!

Hallo to Short Stuff, Djoan, Margobird and Alan (lovely hollyhock!) Hope the weather holds for your trip to the Lake District.  Hope I haven't missed anyone!  Take care all; off to start the day (getting later every morning).

  • My Redpoll/Linnet is back to being a Lesser Redpoll again!  Mike emailed to say he was looking out the window at the time at a Linnet and typed that by mistake!!!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Short Stuff - good to see you here!   A lot of the quality of my pics is down to having a good camera, and being in the right place at the right time - and the great thing about digital, one can take hundreds and select the best to keep!
