Weekly Chat Sunday June 27, 2010

Evening/morning all:

Lindybird; Yes!! What was the Drama next door?? Oh by the way, remember the "Tiger Woods" event down the road where somone drove into a neighbor's garage?  Well, heard it was yet another neighbor's young son, totally potted (drunk) who was coming home late and somehow mistook the gas pedal for the brake!!  Apparently, the Fire Department was there, etc., and had to cut the (uninjured) perpetrator out of the car because the garage door collapsed onto the car.  They've just completed the repairs.

OG. Ooooh. Another lovely butterfly. Thanks!

Alan: Watched the US/Ghana match - felt so bad for the U.S. team (but if they'd won, would've felt bad for the Ghana team!)  They started off so lackluster; then picked up in the second half, but then hit (to me at least) a sort of slump toward the end of the second half, but picked up again in the overtime, but to no avail.  It doesn't matter which team/player I support, I always feel bad for the loser. These people put so much time and effort into their games....  Soccer is so much more exciting than U.S. football where, as I've noted before, the players are all done up like Michelin men and spend most of their tiime in a pile.....

AQ: We had floor heaters in our church in Watford, and everyone huddled over them (and roasted!) during the winter months.  I missed the "red card" reference in your response to Alan....."

Our new back gate got installed today. I worked in the garden (after footie!) and managed to decimate a Potato Vine. Was trying to "re-install" it on the wall, but thought I'd be clever and trim it. Big mistake. Oh well, it'll grow back.

  • Hi Annette. Our church heaters are installed up on the walls with the warm air blowing down - lovely if one is dressed not too warmly!   re red card, I wondered if Alan's OH may be banned from shopping for a few (?) days!!! Our crab apple tree changed from Green-n-gold to Gold-n-green. After this latest cold spell, it is looking a bit bare. A different view every day. We are off later to visit m-i-l. I will be lovely driving in the car - my feet may even get warm! I have reached the "embroidering facial features" stage of these minature knitted bears. I shall be glad to return to some real knitting. I have in mind a sleeveless jacket to wear, ahem, in spring or autumn, depending how fast I knit.

  • Morning all. Wonderful butterfly pics OG, I have never seen one with transparent wings, didn't even know there are such - I certainly learn new things from this site :)

Annette, Pohtiolampi is only about one hour drive from mine so won't stay overnight but probably will try that salmon/trout dish and visit the gift shop. Lovely roses Lindybird. I love flowers but tend to kill them, I'm known to kill a cactus for the lack of water, seriously I have! LOL Only plant that survives my TLC is Chlorophytum comosum, Spider Plant in English I think. And during summer I usually have something easy pot-plants in my balcony. This summer I have small yellow violets and also parsley, basil and chive.

  • AQ: Never heard of "red card."  Enjoy visit to m-i-l.  Cool where you are; and very hot in the UK tomorrow - in the 80s (32C) or thereabouts.  In the meantime, we're 8 degrees below normal, which puts us at abou 70F for a high and 60'ishF for a low. Very comfortable.  Stay toasty!

  • Auntie: You killed a cactus by not giving it enough water?  Um.   They need lots of heat and sun plus low-humidity.....  Not sure how you could under water it in Finland!!  :-)

Watching "History Detectives" on telly - they're trying to prove that a car someone bought in San Diego is the same Sunbeam Alpine that Grace Kelly drove in To Catch at Thief.  Stay tuned....

  • OK; they've ascertained that the car was in fact shipped back to LA to finish the film - but this one is not the "movie" car.  Now they're asking viewers if anyone has a Sunbeam Talbot to send them the VIN (vehicle identification number) in an attempt to track it down.  Do I have a sexy convertible Sunbeam in my driveway? No.

Well, LG nest had two fish in about two minutes; well, 10 minutes; LOTL has had one delivery and I'm signing off. Take care all.

In soccer I believe a second yellow card at the same game leads to a red card, and therefore to a sending-off. Now I really must go. Bye.

  • Annette, killing a cactus is actually easy, you just say to yourself " this one likes low humidity - do not water yet" and reply that long enough LOL

  • Hi, all. It was 92 F/33 C here today and more heat and heavy storms tomorrow. Humidity is 89%.

I'm currently watching How the Earth Changed History on PBS. It's wonderful! Right now, the program is focusing on the Sahara Desert. I can't for the life of me figure out how ospreys and other birds manage to migrate over the Sahara. The climate and landscape are so brutally hostile and demanding. How do they survive such conditions? Truly phenomenal! I have so much respect for birds. AQ: They are also showing spectacular footage of Mount Conner in Australia. Breathtaking!!! I would dearly love to see that area. Annette: At least a segment of the series was filmed in Santa Barbara, at a site where a fault releases methane gas bubbles. They are also showing Chaco Canyon and other sites in the Southwest.

You can see photos from the series here: http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/series/how-the-earth-changed-history#tab-Photos/0 If you can watch the program, I recommend it . The presenter is Dr. Iain Stewart, Scottish geologist. He has such a lovely voice; I could listen to him all day.

Auntie: I'm so glad that your mother is progressing well. I hope you are able to take your trip. Looks like a beautiful and serene place.

Annette: Such a shame that a young person driving drunk caused the "Tiger Woods" incident in your neighborhood. My uncle was killed (many years ago) while driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Always hate to hear of young people tempting fate that way. Sounds like you're working hard in your garden. It will be lovely, but don't work too hard. I can empathize with you about choosing a telly. I'm thinking of buying a new computer, and the new technologies are mind numbing.

I may put the remodeling of the house on hold until autumn. Instead, I may get a new computer and start doing some freelance work (writing or editing). I don't know whether I can scare up some work or not, but if so, I'll have more money to do a nicer renovation of the house, once the intense heat ebbs off a bit in the fall.

OG: Those butterfly pics were stunning!!! I loved the one with transparent wings. I've made it my desktop wallpaper. Yay! I also have eye floaters. Luckily, mine aren't very noticeable or annoying unless I'm looking right into bright sky. I've had them for years, probably because I'm nearsighted (which makes you more prone to eye floaters at an earlier age).

Margobird: I hope you enjoyed your show. Lindybird: I loved the pictures of the roses; my roses were never that healthy and prolific. Glad you found good frames for your glasses.     Alan: Shoes 1 Handbags 1! LOL

Hope all of you who are suffering drought get rain soon. Everyone have a nice Sunday

  • Morning, All:   Sunny and bright here again today - high temps predicted in south of England again today, but we are just plain Hot.  Here is another garden pic to brighten up the morning:  my white clematis has come out, it planted it in a very 'green' corner of the garden so needed something which would stand out against all that green:

  • Going to church this morning – haven’t been for a while – then probably more weeding (did quite a lot of hoeing and sowed more salad and carrots yesterday).  Also need to clear laundry area and kitchen tonight for boiler fitting to start early Monday morning.

AQ – pleased to read that your church is heated, with temps so low!  Lots of really old churches here get very cold in winter because they are far too large, and often remain cold through the year because of their stone walls.  Have missed reference to miniature knitted bears – are they like the ones some of our church ladies make to send abroad for orphans?

Annette – sounds like fast progress in your garden with new back gate already in.  I am sure the Potato Vine will soon make new growth.  I hope you will find time to “take it easy” today.

Auntie – so sensible to grow edible herbs on your balcony.  I had a bad start with herbs this year – blamed it on the different compost I used for the seeds.

Diane – I hope your plan to earn some money for enhanced renovations is successful – you don’t want to be wielding your (Not Pink) tools in this weather!

Final Butterfly worthy of sharing - underside of folded wings, but good markings:

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
