Weekly Chat, Sunday June 13, 2010

Morning everyone and welcome to a new week!  Last week's Weekly Chat ended with some interesting entries and very interesting links (wonderful pix of swan giving cygnets a ride, courtesy of Lindybird, and, thanks very much Alan; another perspective on those oil-covered pelicans - good news too!).  OG: Not rushing and dashing; kids are here and headed to bed early for ultra-early departure. Margobird: Thanks for update on Hope and Lily.

Gather USA/England draw was result of bungle by England goalkeeper?

  • Hello everyone! Don't know where to start but welcome to all new bloggers, and Paula - what a great pic of woodpecker, you are so lucky. Lindybird - Another fabulous flower picture - I'm not sure what I envy the most, your photographic skill or your garden--- Margobird - My Mum used to say that (take more water with it) and yet I grew up in a practically teetotal household. Have to be honest tho' and admit to a liking for wine. Annette - And you think that I might have a knowledge of physics?!! All I know is that bicarb goes fizzy and bubbly--

I am rushing around packing a  suitcase - off to Edinburgh in the morning to spend a few days with daughter and family. (That is daughter with husband in Afghanistan) I will miss the ospreys and all of you guys very much.

  • OG - Have just copied the recipe, have got all the ingredients, now wondering if I can make it before I set off in the morning. OH loves ginger, think I have said that before!  Many thanks for sending it ---

  • It is amazing how much we learn from our Mum, I am always quoting her sayings.

Have a lovely few days with your daughter and family, I am sure she will appreciate having you there.  We will miss you too but be prepared for pages and pages of blogs when you come back.

  • Hi All and welcome to all new Members.

I am so late catching up today and I just had to visit the nest first and read all the reports. I had an appointment at the hairdressers. My foot is much better, thank you, just looks rather black and blue and not so flexible. OH did all the shopping while I sat in the hairdressers and then we had lunch out.

OG, Your weather sounds much better than ours and our temperatures have been no where near 26c. I noticed when we were driving home earlier, the car was ' saying'  only 18c  and that is warmer because the cold wind has died down today.

Margo, I don't like to see garden and hosepipe in the same sentence from you. I hope the bruising doesn't hurt too much. Glad to hear you had the stitches removed and happily that part of your anatomy is fine now!

Linda, Lovely clematis. Did you find which appliance caused your trip switch to activate?

Annette, I will look for the whale petition and see if we can sign.

Alan, How thoughtful of your daughter to find the special osprey Father's Day card.

Heather, Do enjoy your weekend with your daughter and family. I am sure they are looking forward to seeing you.

I know I will have forgotten to answer to other people, so thank you for all news/ photographs.

  • Morning all: Sorry this is a ridiculously long post, but there's so much to respond to!

AQ: Lucky you; nothing like watching our fellow travelers freshening up on the bus!  :-) Congratulations on finally calling the dentist.  I was wondering if Lindybird and her friend left nose prints on that display case...

Jeannette: We'll all be interested to hear about your LG experience, especially Margobird, who's hoping to volunteer next year.

Lindybird: Another of those luscious and extravagant poppies!   Do they work as cut flowers? Do they have any kind of perfume or are they "merely" gorgeous garden plants.   Weeds?  Not a chance of a look-in with a beauty like that beside them.   Love the clematis - you do like purple don't you!?

Hallo Paula Roberts!: Nice to see you over here too!  And what a lovely little woodpecker; he looks so nice against that tree. What kind is he do you know?  We have Acorn Woodpeckers here that are also black, red, and white but in a different pattern (they're also pretty raucous).

Djoan: Raspberry pavlova!!  Yum!   I can't resist anything with raspberries on it. Next time, please have one for me too.

Margobird: Glad your stitches are out but what's this? Toppling about in the garden? Hoses are a menace; we have several and my OH never rolls them up; drives me up the wall . We're having a sprinkler/drip system put in the backyard this summer so hope hose population will dwindle to the absolute minimum.  At least your new bruise won't be on display!    Wonder how LG makes the decision to accept volunteers and if the supply exceeds the demand....  Does anyone know?  Regarless, I'm sure everyone on the blog will have all fingrs and toes crossed for you come November.

OG: My friend and I are going to eat at the place we used to meet at when we both lived in Long Beach. It's called the Park Pantry - very neighborhoody, right next to the park and up from the bluffs over the beach in a lovely residential area.  It's been in business for eons; the breakfasts are wonderful; they make their own jam.  We all used to live within a few blocks of it and whenever we wanted to get together, there was no question about where....   Interesting that "messages" doubles as "errands."  I'm planning to take several boxes of old LPs to a store in LA that specializes in vinyl, plus some other stops.

GeorgeG:  Love rhubarb!! Made some last year but was horrified at the amount of sugar you have to put in. Sigh...  Oddly enough, we have to put sunscreen on Lightning's ears (she's our all white cat) when she sprawls in the sun since they tend to get skin cancer!  Wonder if any other countries will support Australia in their suit against Japan.

Alan: What a great card!  Wonder where she got that.

Heather: Have a great visit in Edinburgh.   I have put bicarb and water on battery cable hookups on cars to clean up the corrosion (but new batteries don't get it).

Brenda: Glad foot is better, if not totally pink.

Going to rush off before another post appears!  Take care call!  :-)))

  • Oh Golly, as I used to say when I was younger - then someone said I sounded like someone out of Enid Blyton!!    - what a lot we have all written today.

Alan:    I know you will be settled down to watch the England Match just now, (although of course Scotland are a far superior team, I'm sure... grovel. grovel)  but I was tickled by your daughter sending you such a lovely card - you obviously don't keep your Ospreyitis from the family, then!

Annette:   Pure coincidence that lots of the pics have been purple/lilac flowers, though we do have quite a few - here is something pink:

-my newly opened pink peonies!   (with red lilies in a pot beside them - there should have been twice as many lilies but the b*#%d slugs ate them!)   Never cut the poppies, they only have one flower on each plant, so are too precious, and they don't smell at all, sadly. But still gorgeous.

  • Hi Annette like you say the bruise is not on view.

Made some phone calls this morning and discovered I can apply to be a volunteer at Loch Garten now for next year.  All applications are not processed until 1 November so will have to wait and hope I will get my wish.  If not I will keep trying until I am accepted.  Really want to do this now so it is very important to me.  I think quite a lot of people have already applied so obviously it is a very popular place for volunteering but we can all see why.

  • Brenda pleased to read your foot is much better but glad you are taking things a bit easy for now.

You are right about hosepipe and garden, my fault for not winding it up but you can rest assured I am doing that now.  Another bruise but at least it can't be seen.

    Margobird

  • Margobird - Have been following your deep desire to be a volunteer, I have all fingers and toes crossed for you.

Thanks HeatherB will be so disappointed if I am not picked but if that happens I will keep trying until I am.
