Morning everyone and welcome to a new week! Last week's Weekly Chat ended with some interesting entries and very interesting links (wonderful pix of swan giving cygnets a ride, courtesy of Lindybird, and, thanks very much Alan; another perspective on those oil-covered pelicans - good news too!). OG: Not rushing and dashing; kids are here and headed to bed early for ultra-early departure. Margobird: Thanks for update on Hope and Lily.
Gather USA/England draw was result of bungle by England goalkeeper?
Winter in Durban (South Africa) : Temp 19c.
Summer in Hunts.(U.K.) : Temp 14c.
Enough said!!!
Morning all and Good Morning Auntie! Don't feel obliged to post just because we like to hear from you. :-)) I also want to send Maureen very special hallos and hugs - I think she's active in terms of watching, but not posting. I keep wondering what she thinks of the current trio of chicks.
Lindybird: Had to laugh at Tonto joke. Oh dear. You mean I can't wear my shiny silver jumpsuit to Home Depot? :-) Heather: It's true that you have to be ruthless to get rid of some items. I'm working up to another round of closet emptying - must make the break with a couple of lovely things that don't do me any favors (or me them). Alan: Here at home, we get day after programming of the World Cup - I'm sure we could subscribe to a special sports channel t get it live but we aren't everyday fans. However, we have been watching the NBA Basketball Playoffs between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics this last week. And we do get live coverage of Wimbledon - only a few weeks and, I hope, one flat screen television away!
Contractors called to say they'll be 45 minutes late - already I'm impressed. Someone asked what was happening and we're reinforcing the garden wall, which is leaning and cracking in parts, and taking out the concrete slabs that the spa and rusty shed were on - and installing a new drain so we don't have to wade through a fast-moving current to take out the trash. Of course, since it rarely rains here I'm not sure why we're bothering, but OH seems to think it's necessary.
Off to stuff sheets in the washing machine this morning....
Forgot to say that there was an item on the BBC News both this morning and at lunchtime, about the Sea Eagles Project which was to have been taking place on the Sussex coast. After a lot of hoo ha from local farmers and others who seemed to think that the birds would be creating havoc, the project is now to be shelved due to the cuts and the recession. Perhaps its just as well, as its possible that some would have liked to harm the birds/nests if they felt so strongly about this, and now perhaps the birds are only safe in the Scottish environment where it is more remote from humans.
One of the Derby peregrines has fledged. Project members have spent all day trying to locate it. Just posted (6:01 pm) that it has been located on a roof close to the cathedral so must be capable of flying OK!
Linda, I heard about the Sea Eagles Project being shelved. It was going to be in Suffolk, not Sussex, but I gather there are placards around the county, saying ' No Sea Eagles Here'. As far as I know, there is a scheme, where the Scottish farmers can claim for loss of animals, which the eagles have killed, which obviously is open to abuse, but no such deal in Suffolk. I think it is the right decision as I fear for the birds. Some have been poisoned in Scotland.
Geez. That's depressing about the Sea Eagles, but best for them maybe as some have noted.
Trucker Steve northbound across the flatlands of southern Texas. Yeeeehawww!
Off to gym.
Thanks to Sandy for news of the Derby Peregrines.
Meant to put Suffolk, not Sussex, as to the Sea Eagles, but I've been in a hurry to post today due to other pressing matters.
Off to look at Trucker Steve now, and do my own Yeeeehawww s!

Sandy thanks for the above. I looked in this morning and felt quite worried as they had not found it, feel much relieved.

Turned out really warm and sunny here today. Pootled about in garden - actually ran out of things to do at the back, and didn’t want to start anything at the front so came and watched Ospreys before making dinner! After dinner, supervised a bit of moving around to give painter access to the last window! He has one coat to do on the penultimate one, then this biggie to tackle – the patio doors. OH has been cleaning some of the finished ones this afternoon, so we are quite smart at the front and both ends!
Girls – I persuaded OH to get rid of some clothes today! He had “replaced” some old trousers without actually taking them out of his wardrobe – so out went three pairs of casual trousers and a suit (he still has three suits [dress up, funeral and other] and hardly ever wears them). {double brackets, don’t think you literary types will approve of that!}
Annette – I hope the late arrival wasn’t an indication of how your work will proceed – at least they called to tell you! Having looked at BigRig Steve, I was going to remark that Texas is still flat!! He was calling on his folks in San Antonio today.
Lindybird and BrendaH – noticed the news re potential Sea Eagle introduction in Suffolk – English Nature withdrew for economic reasons – saying it’s nothing to do with protests. RSPB apparently might carry on with another partner if found, but maybe somewhere else in England.
Sandy - pleased about young Peregrine in Derby – glad they have evidence that it’s first flight was successful.
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Evening all: Contractors crew arrived and did an amazing amount of really heavy, nasty work; now we have piles of concrete out by the sidewalk and I can't imagine how they can load them into their truck. They're all slight Mexican men but seem to be made of steel. I keep running out there with cold water since don't want them to get dehydrated. They'll be back tomorrow. Filthy work. Some people have very hard lives. It always bothers me.
Then lady witih slipcovers arrived and that's another thing off the to-do list.
Bumped into friend at the gym and we went off for coffee and pastry at the place I bought the birthday cake. Didn't worry too much since seem to have lost a pound or two, even with visitors.
OG: My OH tried "getting rid" of stuff by moving it from one closet to another - ha! Managed to get a lot of it off to the charity folks.
Did everyone see Heather's post on the Daily Chat? Very funny. Said her OH had spent all day catching one trout, a tad unproductive compared to a certain osprey, and that he left the head in the sink, which made her think: "Odin could've done something with that!" :-)
