Daily Update (LG Nest) Tuesday 8th June

Hi everyone and especially to Annette in SoCal - have posted a last note that I was starting new thread, hope that helps.

As you can guess, its raining or has been raining and EJ is soaked but managing to keep the wee ones undercover. I'm not sure how many fish were delivered yesterday but there were a few.

Rain seems to have eased and EJ is having a little stretch at the moment.

Happy watching to all of you around the globe.  See you in the morning.

  • Its interesting about the '3rd chick theory' .... I'm no expert either ... this is my third year of watching, too. I remember last year that there was frequent bullying at feeding times, but I can't remember when that started ... and it was often Mallachie who lost out and went into submission. Perhaps with Titch being so feisty the same will happen this year, but if there's plenty food maybe it won't happen at all ... I do hope so!

I think i must have started watching late in the season of 2008 because I can recall there were only two at that time, Nethy and Deshar. Without checking back through the blogs I cannnot be sure, but were they the chicks of Henry who didn't bring many fish?

  • HeatherB - I also started late in the season 2008 when there were only two chicks ... but I can remember poor Deshar coming in for quite a bit of bullying from Nethy. The male that year was Orange VS ... he was only there for the one season, he didn't turn up in 2009.

Thanks, DJoanS - My memory is appalling!

  • HeatherB - I have to confess I checked back on the blog :-)) On the right hand side of the main blog there are the names of the ospreys of previous years ... my memory is none too good either!!

  • More informed people may correct me but I understand Henry was a great fisher  - it was OVS, unfaithful mate of another female Osprey that was enamoured of EJ but could not handle both families.

    Normal 0 false false false

DJoan:  that was such a lovely picture of EJ in the evening sun yesterday before the onslaught of heavy rain.

I’d like to thank everyone for their super ‘snaps’ of ‘the family’ yesterday – the Update was a great read and a feast for the eyes when I came home from work last night ....................

where  !!!  I said hello to a colleague I’d missed for a couple of weeks as she was on holiday and …………  would you believe it  …..  she was at the centre watching Odin feed his chick for real as we all were watching it online   !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, now, I have an LG tea towel with an Osprey on it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Wasn’t that kind of her?   Couldn’t possibly actually use it of course   LoL    :)

I've been considerably 'undertheweather' for the last 10 days - ulcer on the  cornea of my right eye so I've been so pleased to read the posts but have not felt  like posting much.

Annette - I'm glad you can see what I mean about EJ's intruder voice being a pale shade of what it was last year.

Yes, to agree with someone - I believe that EJ knows that she is on to a winner with three chicks cos Odin is a good provider and therefore especiallly after last year,  although she instinctively 'favours' the first hatched the youngest and chick two are very readily 'fed up' in their turn.

  • That makes me feel a whole lot better but I am obviously very unobservant :-)) We won't go there. I'm hearing wings flapping better go and check the nest

  • Jane, sorry to hear you've been under the weather. That sounds very painful:( Great job about the tee towel:)

Welcome Gary1:) (maybe I should have thought about having a number after my name.. lololo)

Enjoyed the chat about the 3rd chick. This is my 2.5th year of watching. I agree with what's been said and i think it all depends on the amount of food coming in. When there were only 2 chicks, the bullying was bad as the food supply was very poor. Last year though, Odin earned his name "the Magnificent" by the food he caught (as well as his looks) and although there was rivalry there was plenty of fish. I am assuming it will be this year, baring anything unforseen. Titch may not get as much as the others every meal but she is not shy in getting to the front which bodes well. I think we talked about this last year with Garten and she ended up bossing everyone around, including EJ!

Anyway, I've waffled as there is no action on the nest, all quiet.

  • Gary - you mean third chick Garten last year, although in character she was very much like big half-sister Nethy the year before!!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
