Weekly Chat, Sunday May 30 2010

Hi all: Pesky cam is down again.   Don't forget to check the last page of previous week's posts for a hallo from Caerann and somewhat worrisome news from Phoebe's nest.

Hot, hot here today. Now the wind is back up - chimes are chiming madly and motion sensor lights are coming on and off as the hanging plants sway in the wind.  Nice tree man is coming next week; hope our Chinese Elm doesn't sustain any more damage in the meantime.

OG: Hoping to organize a similar video for my daughter's 50th (or rather, have my clever friend help me do one).

Alicat: Oh man; not good news about the hummers. Tried to watch the video, but more than 12,000 viewers  were also on the site and the video kept freezing.

Diane: Fascinating about Zaca Station Road! Thanks - must've been a tiny railroad since the distance to Los Alamos is just about 9 miles.....  I knew there were wineries up there though haven't visited them yet.

Really tired,  so not staying around late tonight. Planning a lazy day at home tomorrow and Monday. Take care all.

  • Sorry to hear you're still suffering OG, - hope you both feel better soon.  Sounds like antibiotics could be the best plan, if you're not able to shake this thing off.

  • For those in the UK, don't forget that Springwatch starts tonight at 8:00 pm on BBC2.

  • Diane:   Your little town sounds lovely. Nice and quiet. Those birds sound nothing like anything we have!

Annette:   Yes, I have some 'Patty's Plum' poppies in the garden - here is a pic of them:

--they have the most gorgeous dark middles to the flower, and the petals are like silk.  They only last a couple of days each, but its worth waiting for.  This pic is my wallpaper on the pc. and my avatar is another photo of them  < -----

  • Morning all: Just came back from nice long walk around neighborhood. Stopped to admire someone's garden (and wonderfully health Chinese Elm!!) and ended up getting a tour of his back garden too. Learned a lot in the 15 minutes or so we chatted; he said I'd made his day (he was very proud of all his work).  Memorial Day here, so lots of services to honor veterans...   We are staying home today too, to avoid crowds, although we are going to pop over to friend's houselater today (more transplanted Brits) to look at their gas BBQ - ours is low-tech charcoal and I'd really want to do more outdoor cooking this summer, but want something with a thermostat.

Have been watching Phoebe's nest where I suspect Hoku isn't in any hurry to fledge since Hope moved out and he now has the whole apartment to himself and room service too.  But he's flapping furiously away as I type, so who knows....

Margobird: Thanks for update on Hope the bear; will check out their page later.

OG: Oh no; take care of that cough!

Lindybird: Cute little verse!  Lovely Patty's Plum - and of course that's your avatar (duh).   :-)

Thanks to everyone else for pix and posts. Have a nice rest of the day. I'm off to pick oranges to take to friend's house.

  • Saw duty Doctor who decided my left lung is a bit noisy, so because of my medications and suppressed immunity I get antibiotics. He said OH’s chest is clear and he is not at risk, so he gets nothing!  Having to stop on the High Street for the pharmacy, I also got milk shake and cake at the Coffee Lounge.  Still very warm and dry here – can it really be a Bank Holiday Monday?  Getting regular radishes and salad leaves from our garden now – taste the vitamins!  Had a call from the hotel manager this morning – big apology for her staff’s mistakes, they can’t provide what we need now, but are expecting to install a wet room in November.  Offered me the choice of a holiday next year or full refund now.  Had to think on my feet, because 2011 holiday at what was the 2009 pre-booking price could be a good deal, but decided to take the refund and not have to think about it any more.  Might take off locally to Galloway or the English Lakes for a few days some time.

  • Annette/Lindybird – when my mother moved into a care home, she went a bit minimalist and declared she wouldn’t have room for any photo frames, so we prepared one big collage of family photos from her wedding forward, and she then just had the one picture to hang on her wall, and lots of memories –right up to their golden wedding anniversary the year before my father died.  They were all duplicate pictures, so we didn’t mind cutting them.  Emma – watching the TV summary of the week, I thought there seemed to be lots of muted colour schemes in the Chelsea gardens, yet lots of brash colours in the floral pavilion – almost seemed that growers have produced plants which the gardeners/designers don’t want to use!  Terry – when we arrived at Ballindalloch, I said we’d been there before.  OH was sure we never had.  I described the rock garden and he was sure that was somewhere else.  Again when we reached the car park I said I recognised the castle and its doocot, but no, blah, blah, blah.  Then when we went round the corner, he had to admit , yes, we had been before!  But we still really enjoyed it – rock garden is bigger than before, and walled rose garden has been remodelled.  Lindybird – I have always thought Halcyon was another name for the Kingfisher!  Maybe this is from some literary allusion when I was young (I was once!).  EDIT: looked it up – Halcyon is latin name for Kingfishers, taken from Greek legend about a mythical bird nesting on the sea – and my literary allusion was possibly “halcyon days” from Shakespeare’s Henry VI Part 1!  Liked the three little humbugs poem!!   Beautiful picture of your poppies, too.  Annette – thanks for suggestion, but I already take stuff for allergies, April through September every year!  This did feel like allergic reaction some of the time, especially when it was painful behind my eyes, but that part has worn off now.  Diane – hope the deer don’t get tummy ache from testing the little green apples!  Your right about the Kingbird sounding like an electric fence – amazingly similar!  Margobird – good to have better report of Hope – but she looked so thin in that photo!  Annette – good that you were able to talk gardening with a neighbour as well as looking at other gardens – what a nice man!

  • haven't had time to think or catch up on the site these last few days, asides from everything else I had a library book to finish before tomorrow. Nearly there, only 30 pages to go!!!1    Keep well and take care  OG Get well soon

  • For those who enquired, Boss is "heading in the right direction" as he says, but signed off until 21st June, so I won't be on here much, maybe lurking, not contributing.  Sorry you're not feeling well OG, hope cough goes soon.  Thanks to all for pics and info.

    Terry in Cumbria

  • Hey, Dibnlib, I thought 18 pages was bad enough yesterday, but 30!!! Heavens!

    Terry in Cumbria

  • Thanks for good wishes.  Had a lovely balmy evening in the garden - breathe much better outside!  Made final decision re winter casualties in containers, and rearranged pots on the decking (well, supervised rearrangement).  Rain forecast here tomorrow morning.  Hey, Terry, you'll deserve double holiday when the boss gets back!  Good night/evening/morning all.
